Thank you for (still) visiting this blog.

A good while back, my webhost updated its servers. That has had a terrible side effect: my site Kantwerk.nl crashed. Sort off.
I'm not smart enough to repair it, or get to it at all.

So, I opened up a new webshop:

There are some new patterns on there. A set of 3 with Estonian Lace design.

The designs can be bought separately and as a set of 3.

The photo above is Merula, the latin word for Merel or Black Bird. Because I see the flapping of the wings, movement and motion.

Then there is Flower Princess, a nice balance of nupps and lace with a short and very sweet edge.

Last but not least:
Sweet Pea. This is not an easy one, there is much switching between knit and purl stitches in all rows, and then the nupps. You need to pay attention for this one, use stitch markers and be rewarded with a very beautiful shawl.

Then, you could treat yourself to all 3!

I know, a LOT of nupps. But also a lot of gorgeous knitting to wear!

I hope you will add the link to my new shop in your bookmarks and visit once in a while. Not all my designs are in the shop, yet.

De tijd vliegt voorbij!

Er zijn alweer nieuwe projecten van de naalden afgekomen, zonder dat er nog een blog over is geschreven! 

Zo heeft "Weide" het daglicht gezien! Een sikkelvormige shawl die versierd wordt met een bloem en schaap patroon in nupps. De rand wordt prachtig gevormd door het kant zo in te breien dat het op golvend water lijkt. 

Time flies!
In the past months, new project came of the needles and I didn't even write about them!

"Weide" was released. A crescent shaped shawl with flowers and sheep pattern in nupps. The edge is worked in such a beautiful lace pattern that reflects the stitches as if they were waves in the water. 

Je kunt hem precies uit 1 streng Glitter Kant van Atelier 't Wolbeest breien (800m/100gr). Ze verft hele mooie kleuren waardoor deze shawl lekker opvalt boven je winterjas of zometeen in de zomer!

It's a 1 skein shawl, you can knit it with a medium laceweight yarn (876y/100gr). This was knitted with Glitter Lace by Het Wolbeest. She dyes beautiful colours, that will look very attractive on a wintercoat or later next year in summer!

Mystery Knit a long!

R/each 

R/each-ing out to anyone that is knitting lace and wants something else.
A Semi Circular shawl with several techniques to entertain the intermediate skilled lace knitter.

The YARN: 
Dye for Wool Baby Camel//Merino 480m/100gr

The shawl will weigh 122 gr = ~590m 

The use of 2 colours is highly recommended, as is the fuller yarn. 
I’ve chosen a 1 ply yarn, to make some pattern parts come out better.

The main (LIGHT) colour is light and will be used for 81% of the skein. 
The contrasting (DARK) colour is darker and will be used for 40% of the skein.

Instructions will be charted and with written out rows.

Needles: 3,5mm or US4

In this design:

Shetland lace pattern 
Estonian lace pattern with nupps 
Slipped stitches 
working with 2 colours

Een shawl in een halve cirkel vorm met verscheidene technieken om de gemiddelde kantbreister leuk bezig te houden.

Het gebruik van 2 kleuren wordt aangeraden om onderdelen van het patroon beter uit te laten komen.

To be clear.... / Om duidelijk te zijn.

Er is een tijdje geleden een vraag gekomen of ik het patroon wilde schrijven van Diamonds are Forever. Net op een moment dat ik er eigenlijk zelf heel erg zin in had om met wat nieuws te beginnen. Het was een mooi tijdje geleden dat ik die voor het eerst had gebreid dus het voelde weer helemaal nieuw.

 A while back I recieved a request to write a pattern for Diamonds Are Forever. Just in time, I was thinking what to do next and this pattern was made just far enough in the past to make it feel like new.

 Een oproep voor testbreisters was gemaakt en ik mocht me wéér gelukkig prijzen met heel veel belangstelling. Het patroon is geschreven, besproken en in diverse hele mooie uitvoeringen tot leven gekomen. Ik heb zelf een rode gebreid met nupps voor de harten en kraaltjes in de rand.
Lucy koos er voor om alleen maar kraaltjes te gebruiken (ipv nupps) en het origineel was met alleen maar nupps.

I called for some testknitters and plenty were found. I'm really lucky with those people. Pattern got written, discussed and executed in various yarns and colours. Lucy used all beads, I used nupps for the hearts and beads for the edging. The first one I made was white (all nupps) and the second was red.

 Best trots dat er zulke mooie resultaten worden behaald!

Er is alleen 1 klein 'dingetje' wat me van het hart moet.
Mocht je nu al een shawl van Kantwerk hebben gemaakt, of 2...  en je wilt er 1 verkopen, dan vind ik dat niet erg. Er staat DUIDELIJK op elke patroon pagina: niet voor commerciële doeleinden. Graag wil ik dat wel even weten, dan kan ik het in de gaten houden.
Nu stond er onlangs 2 Muness Tower's op Facebook "Te Koop". Kijk, DAT kan dus niet. Ik heb zelf ook mijn geld verdiend door van een ontwerp maar 1 te breien.
Het moet echter geen lopende band werk worden. Het moet niet zo zijn dat er volgende week een groene hangt en die week erna een roze etc. Dat kan ik niet waarderen. Ik hoop dat je het begrijpt.

One little thing is bothering me though.

The other day there were 2 Muness Tower's  "For Sale" on Facebook. I have a BIG problem with that.
I know I've made a living with selling knitted shawls but only by knitting ONE. It shouldn't become production work, this week a pink one and next week a green shawl. I DO NOT APPRECIATE THAT. I hope you understand.

In the end, it turned out right...

Soms, sóms heb je van die momenten. Een opdracht waar geen tijdsdruk op ligt, vervolgens dus blijft liggen en dan op het laatste moment er achter komen dat het véél meer werk is dan je had gedacht.
Arrogantie en te weinig ervaring.

Sometimes, occasionally you've gotten sloppy. An assignment that has no deadline, which means it has been laying around for ever and then as the deadlines is in clear sight, you realize it was a lót more work than you had anticipated.
Arrogance and not enough experience.

 Zo moet het er uit komen te zien; het groene vestje.

 This is the target, the little green cropped cardigan...

Eerst maar eens besloten om beide delen TEGELIJK op te zetten; dan was ik er het snelst vanaf mee klaar. Dat bleek uiteindelijk een goede keus. 

I decided to cast on for both parts at the same time, to be done with it quicker. In the end it proved to be a very good choice.

De mouwen. Dat viel nog niet mee! Er stonden best veel steken op de naald en voor je heen en weer bent... Maar het is wel vrolijk, al die frisse kleurtjes.

The sleeves. That was hard work! A lot of stitches on the needle and it took a long time to knit a row. It is very pretty in these bright colours.

Toch maar even geïnformeerd hoe lang de mouwen moesten worden. Ik kon een patroon inkorten en dan hup aan het werk voor het voor en achterpand. Dat was interessant; nu moest ik de delen splitsen. Op sommige stukken betekende dat, dat er 8 bollen wol aan hingen te bungelen om in patroon te kunnen blijven werken. Dat ben ik niet gewend!

First I had to inquire for the sleeve length, that meant I could omit one pattern and start right away with the front and back. Then it became more interesting as I had to separate the parts for the neck opening. Working the pattern it meant I had to use 8 balls of yarn; I'm NOT used to that!

Hé het lijkt er al op! Maar het is meer een losse flodder dan een prachtig vestje op een foto... Nu kwam de ellende; het eindeloos wegwerken van losse draadjes. Nu, met mijn shawls zijn dat er hoog uit 3 of 4... Kijk eens naar de kleurwisselingen! Ik zag er als een berg tegen op. Dat vertraagde het wel een beetje...



Yes, it's starting to look like the cardigan from the picture. It's a bit floppy.. Now for the hard part; weaving in all ends. Believe me, there were a lot! I'm not used to that either; knitting my shawls leaves me usually with 3 or 4 strands. It seriously slowed me down.

En uiteindelijk kwam het toch weer goed... Na een aangebreide boord aan de onderkant, gehaakte randen om de sluiting en de nek en een zacht zeepbadje mocht het vestje uitrusten op bed. Na dat het droog was, gewacht tot de zon scheen en gauw naar buiten en foto's maken!

In the end it turned out just right... After I've knitted an edging and crochet-ed the front and neckline, a soft soapy bath the cropped cardigan could take a little nap on the bed.
When it was dry and the sun came out, it was time for some pictures!

De nieuwe eigenaar is er reuze blij mee! Kijk maar...

All over the place

Zoals jullie misschien wel kunnen begrijpen gaat het hier een beetje op en neer. Drukke tijden met veel geregel en rustige tijden waarop je lekker in kan storten.
Zo gaat het met het breien ook. Schreef ik een paar dagen geleden nog enthousiast over de ColourMart Spring Contest 2011 en mijn Lerwick Lace, hij ligt nu al dagen in een stil hoekje. Ik heb het middenpaneel al wel afgekregen, en ben al begonnen met de 2e rand... tot ik afgeleid werd.

As you might be able to understand, things are going up and down in our house. Busy times with lots of appointments, telephonecalls, arrangements and stuff, and quieter times where you can crash.
That how it's going with the knitting too. Did I write about the ColourMart Spring Contest a few days ago, and my Lerwick Lace shawl? It's in a lonely corner of the couch right now for days. I did finish the centerpanel already (extra lacy) and started the second edging.. that is untill I got distracted.
Zo heb ik dit garen speciaal laten verven. Ik zag het op Etsy maar het was in sokkengewicht. Dus overleg gepleegd met de shop-owner en ze heeft het voor mij op kantgewicht geverfd. In het echt is het nog iets meer olijfkleurig. Samen 1 streng van ruim 1200 meter.
I had this yarn specially dyed for myself. I had spotted it on Etsy, but it was in fingering. So convo-ed with the shopowner and she dyed it for me in laceweight. In reality it is a bit more olive coloured. Together they make a 1300 y skein.
Vorig jaar heb ik het ontwerp gemaakt; Little Apples. En wonder boven wonder; mensen vinden het leuk en er is zelfs al iemand die er 2 gebreid heeft! Ik had op de Breidag van haar en haar een prachtige bol écht Estlands garen gekregen; ideaal voor een echt estlands patroon en een mogelijkheid om mijn eigen ontwerp te promoten. Dus ook meteen maar begonnen.
Last year I made a design; Little Apples. And low and behold, people like it and there is even someone who has already knitted 2 shawls with my design. On the Breidag I was gifted a ball by her and her of original Estonian yarn, perfect for a original estonian pattern and a chance to promote my own design.
Van de week zag ik op Ravelry dat ik deze shawl nog niet in hibernation had gezet, en ik vroeg mezelf af waarom niet. Ik had er al heel lang niet aan gewerkt. Zo als hier boven zag het er vorige week nog uit, hier onder zoals het er gister uit zag. Het is de Spring Shawl, ik heb dus nog een héle lange weg te gaan.

Last week on Ravelry, I noticed I hadn't put this shawl in Hibernation yet. I was wondering why because I hadn't worked on it for a long time. The picture above is how it looked last week, and picture below is how it looks now. It is the Spring Shawl so I still have a lóng way to go.
Er staan ook nog een paar opdrachten aan te komen, een paar lange dagen met Chris in het ziekenhuis; dus geen idee hoe dit verder gaat.
Of is dit nu wat ze noemen 'wild breien' ....

I also have a few commissions coming in, a couple of long days with Chris in the hospital, so I have no idea how this will continue.
Or.. is this what they mean by 'wild knitting'...

Diamonds are forever

Nou, het nam ook 'forever' om deze te breien.
Het begon leuk, met een paar blaadjes en fijne naalden (2,5 mm). Lekker aan het breien, maar het begon toch te vervelen. Net rond die tijd zag ik op Ravelry de Garbo Shawl. Die vond ik wel mooi, dus met heel veel gereken uitbedacht (want geen patroon) en begonnen aan de ruiten (diamonds in het engels).
Het nupp patroon ging redelijk goed, maar het waren er best veel. Ik had ook geen idee hoe groot hij zou worden. Vanaf november heeft hij groot en deels stil gelegen. Ik kwam er niet aan toe en omdat ik niet wist hoe lang ik nog 'moest' breien, wilde ik ook niet meer.
Toen eerst maar het ruitpatroon met de nupp-harten afgemaakt en flink om me heen gekeken wat er mooi bij zou staan. Het is een driehoekige sjaal en ik had geen zin om er nog eens een aangebreide rand voor te maken. Die in Haapsalu Sall staan zijn relatief te klein vergeleken bij de grote blokken, en die in Knitted Lace of Estonia staan vond ik ook niet leuk.
Even kwam de rand van Echo Flower Shawl nog in aanmerking maar omdat ik er helemaal geen bloemen in had, toch maar niet.

Nog maar een paar keer op Ravelry gekeken en in Haapsalu Sall. Toen zag ik op pagina 140 een patroon ter ondersteuning van het grote patroon en dat leek me wel grappig. Klein, subtiel en net genoeg om als rand te fungeren.
Daarna was de sjaal gauw klaar. En heeft het toch nog een jaar geduurd voor hij van de naalden af was.

Well, it almost took forever to knit this.
It started out with a pretty leaf pattern and some fine needles (US 1,5). But it became boring soon enough and right about that time the Garbo Shawl pattern was spotted. I calculated how to fit it in and began right away.
It was a lot of work, all those nupps and I had no clue how big the shawl would be. It lay dormant from November last year because I didn't wanted to knit on it anymore, I had no idea how far I had to go and still no clue about the edging.
A lot of searching on Ravelry, Haapsalu Sall and Knitted Lace of Estonia with no result. I didn't want a short and small edging in comparison to the big diamonds. Even the edging of the Echo Flower Shawl could have been a possibility. But.. no flowers in the shawl, so it wouldn't fit.
Some more searching in the Haapsalu Sall and suddenly I saw the little flowery thingy as a support for the big pattern on page 140. Decisions were made, and soon the shawl was finished!
In the end forever took a year..

Rare vorm .... Odd shape

Sinds dat ik de cursus Traditional Estonian Knitting heb gevolgd, en ik het boek heb (Haapsalu Sall) ben ik een beetje in de ban van de Nupp.
Er staan echt geweldige patronen in, en ik heb er al diverse gebreid:
Twin Pearls,Wild Lily,nog stééds bezig met de Garbo...
Ik was ook al eens begonnen met de Sofia Kiri, Crown Prince en Vesiroosikiri. Maar die zag ik niet meer afkomen dus weggelegd.

Ever since I had followed a class Traditional Estonian Knitting, and ever since I have the book (Haapsalu Sall) I am mesmerized by the Nupp.
The wonderfull patterns in the book already seduced me to make the Twin Pearls, the Wild Lily and am still working on the Garbo.
I also had started on the:
Sofia Kiri and the Crown Princeand Vesiroosikiri (squared). ... and still working on the Garbo.
With no end in sight I didn't finish those.

Het patroon van de Sofia kiri vond ik wel erg mooi, ik had alleen geen geschikt garen. Driehoekige sjaals komen niet vaak voor, ze staan tenminste niet in het Haapsalu Sall boek als zodanig. Omdat ik graag wat anders dan anders wil, heb ik na 4 pogingen het voor elkaar gekregen om hem in een driehoek te proppen en van onder naar boven de Sofia te breien.
The pattern of the Sofia Kiri stayed in my mind, I still wanted to knit that. I didn't have a suitable yarn yet, and because I wanted something else for a change, I decided to put it in a triangular shape. That's not very common in Estonian knitting. All the shawls in the book are rectangle or squared. I managed to get it into a triangle shape and I started knitting; from bottom to the top. .
Het garen?? Drops Kid-silk. Zelf geverfd. Want de kleuren die ik mooi vind, hebben ze niet. Donkergroen en diep grijs enz.
Omdat de strengen al paars waren geverfd met Kool Aid en ik niet zo'n goede verver ben, heeft de sjaal dus 3 'kleuren'.


The yarn?? Drops Kid-silk. I dyed it myself. Because they don't have the colourrange I like, I tried it myself. One skein was already dyed purple with Kool Aid, and because I'm not a good dyer, the shawl has now three shades.

Warm... Hot

Het is warm.
ik heb het warm. heel erg warm. Vooral na het werk; lopen met de post is niet zo erg, maar je wordt er warm van en met de hitte buiten kan je die gewoon amper kwijt!
Dus duik ik nu meestal ná m'n werk even in het zwembadje in de achtertuin. Drie-en-een-halve-kuub-water-met-chloor ter verfrissing.
HEERLIJK!

's Avonds wordt er natuurlijk gewoon gebreidt. Ik heb een paar losse bollen kidsilk (drops) die ik nog over had van diverse projecten op een kluitje gegooid en geverfd. Ik vind het garen best mooi, maar ze leveren zelden 'mijn' kleur. Dan doe ik het dus zelf maar.

It's hot.
I'm hot. Very hot. Overheated. Especially after my rounds. Walking isn't that bad, but my body gets warm and with this heatwave I can hardly cool down.
So, after work I take a little dip in my tiny swimmingpool in the back yard. 924 gallons of water to refresh me.
In the evening there will be some knitting done. I've dyed some spare ends of Kid-silk (drops) I had left from some other projects. I like the yarn, but they don't have 'my' colours. So I did it myself.

Twin Pearls

Er is er een af!!
Een paar dagen geleden was hij klaar, rand en al. En toen ik hem aan het blokken was, had ik het per ongeluk omgekeerd neergelegd. Dus hoe het er aan de voorkant uit zou zien, was ook voor mij nog een verrassing.
En wat voor een!!! Hij is prachtig.
Mijn eigen ontwerp naar aanleiding van de keuzes van de ontvangster: Estland kruist Shetland.
Een prachtig nupp-patroon van lelietje-der-dalen; omzoomt door een kader in shetland patroon.
Dáár omheen is een rand aangebreid in het zelfde true-lace patroon als de Shetland Sweetheart Shawl.
I've got a shawl done!
It was finished a couple of days ago, the edging and all too. During blocking I noticed it was up-side down. So the good side was a surprise, even for me. It is gorgeous!!!
It's my own design; combining the taste of the reciever: Estland meets Shetland.
A wonderfull twin lily design, framed with a border in shetland pattern.
All is worked over with a true-lace shetland pattern, the same as in the Shetland Sweetheart Shawl.
Ik had me iets verrekend en er moest nog een vijfde bol komen; helaas was het erg moeilijk om het zelfde kleurbad te vinden (na diverse winkels gemaild/gebeld te hebben; wel de kleur, niet het bad). Gelukkig was er iemand op Ebay in Engeland die nog een bolletje had met hetzelfde kleurbad! Er bleef uiteindelijk maar 10 meter over van die extra bal...

I miscalculated significantly and there had to come a fifth ball of yarn. Unfortunately it was very difficult to get my hands on one in the Netherlands; eventhough I had called and mailed several shops. (did have the colour, not the right batch). In the end I found a shop on Ebay UK and she had the right batchnumber! I finished the shawl with only 12 yards left....
