News!

Goed nieuws!

I’ve got some good news; our son’s battle is now over. the cancer treatment has done it’s job and he has no more active growth and the size of the tumor in his chest has been reduced. That means, according to the oncologist, that Chris doesn’t have to have any more chemo. Just check ups, regularly and scans/MRI.
In September and October he has to have a CT scan and a MRI as a baseline for comparison later on. They don't want to expose him to much to the radiaton of the CT.
He has to take a treatment for a infection, but other than that he's done!

That means… Mommy can collaps now. I’m sick. hahaha.

Half

The first half of this year has gone by.
In hind sight it went pretty quick. But it was hectic, worrysome, new, different, horrible and special.

In the beginning it felt like we were run over by a speeding train. Now we realize it took us along for the ride. Luckily the damage was a bit less horrific than we could have imagned, but there was damage, non the less. In much more aspects of life than we can think of now, I guess.

Chris has cancer. The treatment is almost done. Most medication is taken, the chemo is done. He has lost his hair, gained several pounds from the prednisolon and a horrible experience richer. We ..eh.. he isn't done yet. Scans to be made, results to be told and endless check-ups. The trumpets stay quiet for now.

Positief.

Positive.
The most heartfelt reactions, cards, telephonecalls, support, remarks and empathy from everyone around us.
The big thumbs up goes to the child Oncology departement of the UMCG. They are so nice, friendly, open and clear about things. The first time you go there, you heart goes out to all of those children. It shouldn't happen to thém! But they keep up the good spirits and there is always room for some laughter or a tear.

As parents you hardly know what has happend. We're reasonably fine now, because Chris is doing fine. Only now he has gotten some of the side effects of his medication. (apart from his hair falling out, there are plenty side effects from the chemo). But he's doing well. Thát worries me; can he handle it all.. He's so young.
Time will tell. We will learn.

Nu komt het moeilijke gedeelte eigenlijk pas. Herstellen.

Now comes the hard part. Recovery. It's a lóng road ahead of him. Because taking the medication isn't enough. His body has to take over and finish puberty. He's not nearly done growing! (He's not short though... )

Next week he has to have several scan's and the results will be told the end of July. No idea what's going to happen next.
Maybe we can carefully plan a bit ahead. ...
