Het heeft even geduurd, maar dan heb je ook wat. Ruim een jaar geleden was ik aan het spelen met een patroontje. 
De Outlander shawl was net klaar en ik had wat ideetjes waar ik misschien wel wat mee kon. 
Dus wat proeflapjes gemaakt met verschillende garens, chart geknipt en geplakt. 
Het probleem was alleen de vorm. Het is een patroon met veel mogelijkheden, maar ik kon maar geen vorm vinden, waarin het het beste tot zijn recht kwam.

It has been a while, but it was worth it. Over a year ago, I was just finishing up the Outlander shawl, some ideas popped in my head. I made swatches in several yarns, cutting and pasting in charts was easier. But the shape gave me some difficulties. The basic pattern could be used in several ways, but a suitable one was hard to find.

 

Wat ik dan altijd even doe, even op Ravelry kijken wat ik allemaal al gedaan heb, en wat er nog ontbreekt. Ik had nog geen shawl met een Faroese vorm. Hmmmm, dat was een goede keus.
In het midden de mooie diamant en variaties aan de zijkant.
De keuze voor het garen was daarna natuurlijk ook niet zo moeilijk. Een volle 2ply van Shetland wol. Een kleur die zorgt dat het patroon heel mooi uit komt en nu nog de details.

Didn't see a faroese shape yet. Hmmmm, that could be a great choice.  
The diamonds in the centre and some variations on either side!
Yarn choice wasn't so hard after that decision. A full 2ply shetland wool and a colour that would make the patterns pop!

 Je breit de shawl van boven naar beneden, en wanneer je afkant, is het ook klaar. Alleen nog opspannen en draadjes wegwerken. En dragen natuurlijk. 

Omdat Monique Dreef de opdrachtgeefster was en het garen leverde, en omdat we samen naar Shetland zijn geweest, leek het mij een tof idee om elkaar te ontmoeten, werkoverleg noemen we dat. 
Ik houd erg van de zee en op het strand van Callantsoog begin ik me aardig thuis te voelen. Ik rijd er 'zo' even heen op de motor, voetjes in het zand, ogen op de horizon. Mijn 'thuis' als ik niet thuis ben.
Hjemme is het Deense woord voor "thuis".

 The shawl is worked Top-Down and when you bind off, the shawl is actually done. Just blocking and weaving in ends. And then wear it! 
Because Monique Dreef was the commissioner of this design, and supplied the yarn, ánd because we went on a trip to Shetland last year, I thought it to be best to meet. Business meeting. Yes. 

I just lóve the sea and I'm starting to feel right at home at the beach of Callantsoog. I often go there when I ride my motorbike, feet in the sand, eyes on the horizon. My home away from home.

 Na het werkoverleg met weer nieuwe ideeën, gingen we kijken voor een mooie lokatie om foto's te maken van de shawl. Het was lekker weer, motorpak uit, shawl om en...

After the workbit was done, creating new ideas, we went out to scout some lovely locations to make some pictures. So, the biker jacket and pants had to come off. It was a lovely day with some sunshine...

Om eerlijk te zijn, was ik zelf zo blij met het ontwerp, dat ik de volgende dag mijn (75%) zelfgesponnen garen heb gepakt en meteen nog een shawl heb gebreid!
De wol uit Wales, Hilltop Cloud, had 5 kleuren die ik heb gesponnen. Daarna heb ik het getwijnd met grijze 1ply gossamer Shetland wol van Jamieson & Smith (NL). En deze keer spande ik de shawl op met punten. Ook mooi! 

 To be honest, I was so happy with the design, the very next day, I picked up my own (75%) handspun yarn and casted on! The wool is from HilltopCloud from Wales, I plied it with a 1ply Gossamer Jamieson & Smith (UK) in grey. I blocked the shawl with points, also a beautiful option.

 Hallo en welkom in het nieuwe jaar!!!
Zo. En nu? Tja. Breien. En een beetje spinnen. Ontwerpen gaat best leuk, er zijn veel nieuwe plannen, zowel voor beginners als voor ervaren kantbreisters. Ik hoop dat ik jullie op jullie wenken kan bedienen.

Hello and welcome in 2017!
Okay. So, now what... Well. Knitting. And a bit of spinning. Designing will continue, I have some great ideas for beginners in lace, as well as for the advanced knitters.

Eind 2016 is dit ontwerp uitgekomen: Little Secret. Testbreiers hebben weer hard gewerkt om het allemaal goed op papier te krijgen. Dank aan Ammerins, Susan, Suzanne, Eve en Ditte. 
Het jongere zusje is Aith, al reeds in 2011 uitgebracht.
Zusjes, omdat ze in een verrukkelijke kleur gebreid zijn, Tequila Sunrise. Een zacht geel met oranje blosjes.

 At the end of 2016, I released the pattern for the Little Secret shawl. Test knitters have worked very hard to make every thing correct.  Thank you Ammerins, Suzanne, Susan, Eve and Ditte. 

The younger sister is "Aith", already released back in 2011.
They are sisters, because they are made in a yummie colourway: Tequila Sunrise. A pale soft yellow with orange blushes.
 

 This is a skein of The Gossamer Web "Tequila Sunrise" optional in all yarn variations. 

Ik kan je nog wel iets anders laten zien. Ik heb al een voorbeeldje gebreid met heerlijk yak garen.
De vorm wordt een verrassing, iets wat ik nog niet eerder gebreid heb!

I am able to show you something else. I already was able to make a swatch with this yummie yak yarn. 
The shape will be a suprise, something I haven't even made before! 

Niet vergeten om in de zij kolom te kijken waar ik het komende half jaar workshops zal geven!

Time Flies

De tijd vliegt voorbij!

Er zijn alweer nieuwe projecten van de naalden afgekomen, zonder dat er nog een blog over is geschreven! 

Zo heeft "Weide" het daglicht gezien! Een sikkelvormige shawl die versierd wordt met een bloem en schaap patroon in nupps. De rand wordt prachtig gevormd door het kant zo in te breien dat het op golvend water lijkt.

In the past months, new project came of the needles and I didn't even write about them!

"Weide" was released. A crescent shaped shawl with flowers and sheep pattern in nupps. The edge is worked in such a beautiful lace pattern that reflects the stitches as if they were waves in the water. 

Je kunt hem precies uit 1 streng Glitter Kant van Atelier 't Wolbeest breien (800m/100gr). Ze verft hele mooie kleuren waardoor deze shawl lekker opvalt boven je winterjas of zometeen in de zomer!

It's a 1 skein shawl, you can knit it with a medium laceweight yarn (876y/100gr). This was knitted with Glitter Lace by Het Wolbeest. She dyes beautiful colours, that will look very attractive on a wintercoat or later next year in summer!

Most of the pattern is written, there’s instructions how to make a nupp. You might want to practise that if you haven’t done them before. There are ~106 nupps in this design.The 2 major charts have NO written rows!

Bijna alle rijen zijn uitgeschreven, behalve voor de 2 grotere charts. In dit patroon worden ~106 nupps gebreid. Er zijn instructies die beschrijven hoe je ze maakt. Mocht je ze nog nooit gebreid hebben, dan kan het handig zijn om dit te oefenen.
  

Esha Knit-a-Long

Ik heb speciaal deze swatches gemaakt om het belang van garen keuze duidelijk te maken. Zoals je wel kunt raden, houd ik zelf van de dunnere garens. Maar het hoeft niet altijd meteen ultra dun of gossamer te zijn. 

Echter, met Shetland kant is het wel bepalend welk garen je kiest, zodat de dikte niet afleid van het kant patroon. Hoe dunner het garen, des te beter zie je het patroon. (Paars op 1,5mm, oranje handgesponnen op 2,5mm en blauwe Zitron Filisilk op 3,5mm). 

 I’ve made these swatches to show the importance of yarn choices. You can already guess that I'm fond of the finer yarns, and it doesn’t have to be thread or gossamer all the time. But with Shetland lace, a bigger yarn can distract a lot from the pattern.

The blue is worked in 3,5mm needles with Zitron Filisilk yarn.
THe orange is handspun on 2,5mm needles and the purple is on 1,5mm needles (Gossamer cashmere).

Een close up van de 2 grotere lapjes. Je kunt de ribbels duidelijk zien en vooral bij het blauwe (vind ik) leiden de ribbels erg af van het kant patroon. Door de ribbels wordt het ook nog eens erg rekbaar en had het lapje zelfs nog wel op naald 3mm gebreid kunnen worden.


A close up of the two larger swatches. You can clearly see the ridges of the garter stitch. I think they distract too much from the lace pattern. Due to the garter stitch, it becomes very stretchy and with the lace pattern, this would have been a bit better if worked on 3mm needles instead.

De reden waarom ik dit vertel?? Omdat er een Knit-a-Long komt! Van de Esha shawl.
Samen met een groep breiers (niet alleen in NL!) lekker breien en kletsen én elkaar helpen!
In deze shawl wordt er geoefend met kantpatronen die je vaak terug kunt vinden in Shetland kant.
Elk diamantje wordt gevuld met een patroontje en die worden steeds een beetje moeilijker.
Omdat de diamantjes niet zo groot zijn, en alles netjes binnen de lijntjes blijft, kun je bijvoorbeeld iedere week 2 rijen met diamantjes breien.
Het hoeft niet in heel dun garen maar dat maakt het wel mooier...

The reason I'm telling you this?? Because there is going to be a Knit-a-Long for the Esha shawl!
A great opportunity to knit this shawl with friends from all over the globe!
In this shawl, you can learn patterns that occur frequently in Shetland lace. With each patterned diamond, difficulty rises a bit. For instance, you can knit 2 rows of diamonds per week.
The shawl can be knitted in fine lace yarn, but you don't have too. In my opinion it will look better if you do.

Ik heb gekozen voor een rand in een andere kleur, zodat je tijdens het breien duidelijk kunt zien welke steken van de shawl zijn en die van de rand.
Het hoeft niet meteen in donker garen, ik heb onlangs een foto gehad van iemand die na de workshop de Esha in prachtig lichtblauw garen had gebreid! Dank je wel Joke Verbruggen voor de foto.

The shawl doesn't need to be worked in a dark yarn or with another colour for the edge. I did that, so it would be clear, that when you are knitting on the edge, which stitches are of the shawl and which are for the edge.

It can be worked in a lighter yarn, just look at the shawl Joke Verbruggen made in fine lace yarn, after she took my workshop for knitted lace. Thank you Joke for the photo.

Soms moet je gewoon even wat anders doen dan een heel groot project. Dan wil je iets nieuws uitproberen en een ander patroontje wat je NIET 100x hoeft te herhalen...

Brei dán een swatch / proeflapje. Een uitstekend moment om te kijken of je het nieuwe patroon wel leuk vind om 100x te herhalen. Om te kijken of het garen bij je naaldmaat past, of dat je toch een maatje groter of kleiner moet pakken.

 1. Cuckron shawl (A legacy of Lace) in Jamieson & Smith Supreme fine fleece in "Silver". Combed and handspun, 1ply on 2mm needles. 

Sometimes you have to do something else than the large shawl you're working on right now. Something quick which you can work on directly and doesn't require a 100 repeats.
Make a swatch! A perfect opportunity to see if your yarn matches the needlesize or that you'd better go up or down a size.

 2. Esha swatch in Cashmere/merino (70/30) Bart & Francis on 1,5mm needles 

Het is ook een uitgelezen moment om juist patroontjes te combineren en kijken of het allemaal zo is zoals je bedacht hebt. Vaak neemt het maar een paar meter garen en kun je dus bést met het nieuwe garen breien zonder dat je meteen te kort komt. Of met een restje van een bolletje waar je maar moeilijk afscheid van kon nemen...

3. 1ply jamieson & Smith in optical white; The Second One

 It is also an excellent moment to combine a set of patterns and to check if it all will work out like you had planned. Often it will take only a few meters of that new yarn you just bought and you will not run short. Or... you can use that little left over from that yarn that you like so much but is already used for something else.

4. 1ply Jamieson & Smith in Fawn;  swatch for The Second One.  2mm needles.

Of... soms omdat je zulk mooi en vooral zacht garen hebt gekocht, dat je een 'knuffeldoekje' in je broekzak wilt hebben..

Or, perhaps you have bought such soft and gorgeous yarn that you want a little bit to cuddle in your pocket.

 5. 2ply 2/28NM 100% Cashmere in Caramel (ColourMart) on 2,5mm needles

En soms moet je gewoon even wat garen uitproberen op extra fijne naalden om te zien hoe groot het zou worden als je er géén lace mee breit.
And once in a while you just want to try some yarn on extra fine needles to see how it will look when you're nót knitting lace with it.

 6. Baby sock in estonian wool on 1.5mm needles. 

Even kijken of de rand die je bedacht hebt, wel de bocht om wil en hoe vaak je moet 'Wrap & Turn' toepassen om het mooi te maken. 

Making an attempt to turn a corner to see how many times you need to 'Wrap & Turn' to get it right. 

7. ColourMart 2/48 NM Extra Fine Merino in Bali Peach and Mocha

En als laatste natuurlijk om te zien of je met het garen wat je in huis hebt, toch alvast een gloednieuw patroon uit kunt proberen. Zonder dat je meteen nieuwe voorraad hoeft aan te schaffen. Kun je meteen je 'eigen' kleuren toepassen

And, last but not least; taking yarn from your stash to immediately try out a brand new design. Without emptying your bank account. And slide in your own colour combinations.

Conclusie: swatchen is GEEN tijdverspilling maar uiteindelijk een hele leuke bezigheid.

Conclusion: swatching is NOT a waste of time, but a useful and pretty thing to do.

Leuk stel.... / Nice Set...

 Het begon met een stukkie free style kant breien. Lekkere fijne naaldjes (1,5mm) en een lekker wit dun draadje uit Estland. Opzetten, sluiten en kijken wat er bij je op komt.
Het bleek al gauw dat de patronen niet tegelijk hoefden te beginnen. Ik brei zelden in het rond, dus dat was wel weer leuk. Heerlijk priegelen.

It all started with a bit of free-style-lace-knitting. Just take some very fine needles, (US000) and a very fine white yarn from Estonia and just go! Casting on, closing and lets see what happens. I hardly ever knit in the round, so this was kind of exciting. Patterns don't have to start at the same time and I love working small.

Dus.. zet ik mijn gepriegel op Facebook en een andere Monique (toevallig met een hele mooie webwinkel voor Wol) zag er wel een mutsje in! Die zijn ook rond. Klonk interessant want ik heb eigenlijk nog niet zoiets 'ontworpen'.

So.. I put my dabbling on Facebook and another Monique, who happens to run an online web-wool-shop, saw a cute little hat in it. They are circular too. That sounded interesting, mainly because I haven't "designed" any hat so far.

En zo was er in eens de Raspberry Beret (Framboos Baret...) Bekt lekker, vooral door het liedje van Prince, al heeft dat, volgens mij, weer een héle andere betekenis.. hahaha.

And thus... there was the Raspberry Beret. Pretty catchy name, mainly due to the song by Prince. But I think he's singing about something completely different.. hahahaha.

Hé, dat ben ik... Ik sta niet zo vaak op de foto. Leuke baret. Maar hoe fotografeer je dat nou? Ik heb niet een paspop met een kop en de bovenkant van de baret is tenslotte het mooist. Dus...

Hé that's me! I'm not in a picture that often. Nice beret. But how do you show it best? I don't have a model with a head and the centre of the beret is the most interesting. So...

Wanneer je je dochter de foto laat nemen en zij niet inzoomd, eindig je dus met zoiets!

When your daughter is taking the pictures and she doesn't zoom in, you end up like this.

En toen het patroon te koop kwam op de Breidagen in Zwolle (Oktober 2014) liep het best lekker. Er kwamen wel vragen of er bijpassende handschoentjes bij zouden komen.. Tja, daar had ik niet aan gedacht. Goed idee!
Dus met het zelfde garen en een maten tabel (want de ervaring met handschoenen was iets te lang geleden) en voilá! Vingerlozen handschoenen mét duim. Ze zitten eigenlijk best lekker. Sluit mooi aan, zelfs met mijn grote handen. Geen zorgen, er zijn 2 maten aangegeven in het patroon.


Sales went pretty quick in October, during the Breidagen in Zwolle (2014). There were some questions if there would be any matching mittens. Well, I didn't think of that but sure. Great idea.
So, with the same type of yarn and a sizing chart (because it was too long ago I had worked on a pair of mittens/gloves) and voilá! Fingerless mittens with thumb. They fit very well actually, even with my big hands. No worries, 2 sizes are given in the pattern.

 De gerstekorrels die in de baret zitten, komen terug in de handschoen, net als het begin van de baret. Met een mooi patroon op je hand, lijkt het net een diamantje!

The moss stitch from the Beret returns in these mittens as is the set up of the beret. With this nice pattern on your hands, it looks just like a little diamond.
