Thank you for (still) visiting this blog.

A good while back, my webhost updated its servers. That has had a terrible side effect: my site Kantwerk.nl crashed. Sort off.
I'm not smart enough to repair it, or get to it at all.

So, I opened up a new webshop:

There are some new patterns on there. A set of 3 with Estonian Lace design.

The designs can be bought separately and as a set of 3.

The photo above is Merula, the latin word for Merel or Black Bird. Because I see the flapping of the wings, movement and motion.

Then there is Flower Princess, a nice balance of nupps and lace with a short and very sweet edge.

Last but not least:
Sweet Pea. This is not an easy one, there is much switching between knit and purl stitches in all rows, and then the nupps. You need to pay attention for this one, use stitch markers and be rewarded with a very beautiful shawl.

Then, you could treat yourself to all 3!

I know, a LOT of nupps. But also a lot of gorgeous knitting to wear!

I hope you will add the link to my new shop in your bookmarks and visit once in a while. Not all my designs are in the shop, yet.

Minogame

 Al in 2015 ben ik begonnen met het verzamelen van tattoo's. Ik heb gekozen voor een set in japanse stijl: Aarde, Water, Lucht en Vuur. Ik begon op mijn verjaardag met Water. Gelukkig zit er een hele goede artiest bij ons op het dorp. Bas is mijn vaste tattoo-zetter. Mooie fijne lijnen.
In 2016 kwam er een vogeltje bij, een goudvink, voor Lucht. Maar ik raakte een beetje in de problemen want Vuur is niet gemakkelijk om in een acceptabel formaat te vangen. En Aarde... tja.
Ik viel als een blok voor een... schildpad. Soms voel ik mezelf als een schildpad. Niet al te snel, hard van buiten, zacht van binnen, lekker in de zee maar ook kunnen leven op het strand.
Toen ik begon met het zoeken naar schildpadden, kwam ik uit bij de Legende van de Minogame, een mythische schildpad. Je kunt er over lezen, in het engels, in de link onderaan deze post.

Way back in 2015, I started collecting tattoos. I chose an japanese themed set: Earth, Fire, Water and Air. I got my first on my birthday: Water. I'm lucky to have a very good tattoo-artist right here in our village. Bas Kahle can draw the finest lines! In the summer of 2016 I got a little bird, a bull finch on a branch. But, then I ran in a bit of trouble. Fire and Earth are not very easy to put in a acceptable size.
Then, I fell hard for... a turtle. Sometimes I feel a bit like a turtle; not so fast, hard on the outside and soft on the inside. Very comfortable in the sea but also able to live on land. When I started searching I found the Legend of Minogame. A mythical turtle. A link with the legend, at the end of this post.

Omdat ik eigenlijk maar 1 tattoo per jaar mag, tegen die tijd ben ik vergeten dat het best wel pijn doet, kon ik de schildpad als inspiratie gebruiken, terwijl de afspraak nog maanden op zich zou laten wachten. Ik zou de Hexagonnen gaan gebruiken als basis voor het ontwerp. 

Because I can only have 1 tattoo a year, because by that time I will have forgotten that it does hurt quite a bit, I was able to use that idea as inspiration for a new design. The Hexagons on the shell of the turtle would form the base of the design. 

En toen kreeg ik de kans om voor dit ontwerp een heel erg mooi én zacht garen te gebruiken; KOKON Yarn. (lace)
Een weldadige draad gemaakt met (baby) Alpaca vezels. En helemaal in mijn kleur! Wow.
Eerst natuurlijk een proeflapje maken, kijken of het patroon goed uitkomt, de maat klopt en of de shawl zo wel lang genoeg wordt. 
Er zit 800m op een streng en het zou zonde zijn als je heel veel over zou houden of juist te kort zou komen. 
 Ik heb even een ander garen gebruikt voor het proeflapje, maar het effect was hetzelfde! Dus, meteen opzetten en gáán!
 

I got a beautiful opportunity for this design to create it in a lovely and soft yarn: KOKON Yarn (Lace)
A lucious yarn made with (baby) Alpaca fibers. And totally my colour! WOW.
First, a swatch, to see if the patterns work, if the size is good and if the shawl will be long enough.
One skein has 800m and it would not be acceptable to run short or be left with a lot. 
I used a different yarn for the swatch but the pattern worked! So, casted on and Go!

Klaar!!! Done!!! 

Precies goed. Breed genoeg, lang genoeg en erg mooi! Dit is de "Cloud" kleur, maar er zijn andere als je deze niet mooi vind. Je kunt kiezen uit 12 semi solids, 4 verlopende garens en 4 met een gevarieerd kleur verloop! Er zit vast iets voor je bij. Wil je hem in het echt zien? Dat kan, oa, op 24 maart bij Ja Wol in Rotterdam! Dan ben ik er ook!

Just right! Wide enough, long enough and very pretty! This version is made in the "Cloud" colour, but there are plenty of other colours to choose from: 12 semi solid colours, 4 gradiënt and 4 variegated ones.

Welkom in het nieuwe jaar! Het oude jaar is al afgesloten maar ik was er nog niet aan toegekomen om te bloggen over het laatste ontwerp van 2017! 

Welcome in the new year! The old year has come and gone, but I wasn't ready to blog about the last design of 2017! 

In augustus was ik in de winkel van... Stephen en Penelope in Amsterdam. Ik viel als een blok voor de Madeline Tosh Prairie in een lichtblauw en blauwgrijze streng.

I was in Amsterdam in August to visit the store of Stephen & Penelope. I fell hard for the Madeline Tosh Prairie in a light blue and a bluegrey.

Er zijn veel dingen bekend van Amsterdam: drugs,  grachten plus tulpen zijn toch wel het beste bekend bij het grote publiek.

There are a lot of things Amsterdam is known for: drugs, moats and tulips are the most famous! 

Dus koos ik voor het water. Ik begon met een punt van een paar steken, naar een stuk met  12 herhalingen. Het zijn geen echte kabels, maar 'Twisted Stitches". Je kunt dit deel dus breien zonder kabel naald. 

So, I chose for water. I started with a point of a few stitches to a piece with 12 repeats. These aren't real cables, but "Twisted Stitches". You can knit this part without a cable needle. 

En de bloemen worden dan meteen aan de zijkant gebreid! Geen gedoe met het opnemen van steken. Meteen door! Dat scheelt. Je begint weer met een paar steken en breit de bloemen tot je geen 'water' meer over hebt.

Then, the flowers are worked immediately to the side of the water. No fuss with picking up stitches. You can go, go, go! This part also starts with a few stitches and you can knit flowers until there is no more "Water" left. 

Dus... Fijn breien! 

So, happy knitting.

UPDATE: Lessen en Activiteiten!

Er zijn alweer een paar workshop-data bekend!  

Alblasserdam gaan we op 4 november (ZATERDAG) aan de gang met Kantbreien PLUS!
Nieuwe oefenpatroon en alle informatie die je daar voor nodig hebt om tot een prachtig resultaat te komen.  Kant, nupps en kralen! Het wordt vast (weer) erg gezellig en leerzaam.
Mocht je deze datum niet kunnen, dan kan je ook nog op DINSDAG 16 januari 2018 terecht op dezelfde locatie!

Op 18 November (ZATERDAG) in Rotterdam bij een gloednieuwe breiwinkel: Wolgeluk. 
Alle informatie die je nodig hebt om met een kantpatroon te beginnen komt aan bod, wordt geoefend en uitgelegd.
Dit kun je dan gaan breien (als je wilt). 

Op 1 november ben ik op Texel (maar geen 'losse' inschrijvingen: alléén voor de HELE WEEK)  Kijk op de site van Weldraad voor meer informatie.

ZATERDAG 9 DECEMBER sta ik met een kraam vol Kantwerk op de Midwinterwol van Low Lands Legacy. Ik neem lekker veel mee, wat pakketjes, shawls en patronen en ik neem de breiriem mee! 

Dan is het jaar voorbij.
2018

Op 21 januari 2018 is er nog een Winter Handwerk markt in ons dorp BURGUM (Friesland). Het is als het goed is de hele dag. NIET op de locatie van de vorige jaren, maar er tegen over! Nog chiquer!!
Daar kun je geen workshop volgen, maar wel mijn werk zien en patronen (ed) kopen. 

ZATERDAG 27 januari is de voorlopige datum voor een workshop op Ameland! Meer informatie zal terzijnertijd bekend worden gemaakt. 



ZATERDAG 17 februari geef ik les in Oudendijk, Noord Holland! Een workshop voor beginners, meer informatie en locatie volgt!

 
VRIJDAG, ZATERDAG EN ZONDAG 2, 3, 4 Maart  ben ik in België in Kortrijk! Ik zal er workshops geven én er is een open dag waar ik mijn Kantwerk mag laten zien. Meer informatie en locatie volgt.

En ZATERDAG 10 Maart ben ik bij een gloednieuwe breiwinkel: Suzanne's Handwerkshop in Hoogezand (Groningen)

De tijd vliegt voorbij!

Er zijn alweer nieuwe projecten van de naalden afgekomen, zonder dat er nog een blog over is geschreven! 

Zo heeft "Weide" het daglicht gezien! Een sikkelvormige shawl die versierd wordt met een bloem en schaap patroon in nupps. De rand wordt prachtig gevormd door het kant zo in te breien dat het op golvend water lijkt.

In the past months, new project came of the needles and I didn't even write about them!

"Weide" was released. A crescent shaped shawl with flowers and sheep pattern in nupps. The edge is worked in such a beautiful lace pattern that reflects the stitches as if they were waves in the water. 

Je kunt hem precies uit 1 streng Glitter Kant van Atelier 't Wolbeest breien (800m/100gr). Ze verft hele mooie kleuren waardoor deze shawl lekker opvalt boven je winterjas of zometeen in de zomer!

It's a 1 skein shawl, you can knit it with a medium laceweight yarn (876y/100gr). This was knitted with Glitter Lace by Het Wolbeest. She dyes beautiful colours, that will look very attractive on a wintercoat or later next year in summer!

Most of the pattern is written, there’s instructions how to make a nupp. You might want to practise that if you haven’t done them before. There are ~106 nupps in this design.The 2 major charts have NO written rows!

Bijna alle rijen zijn uitgeschreven, behalve voor de 2 grotere charts. In dit patroon worden ~106 nupps gebreid. Er zijn instructies die beschrijven hoe je ze maakt. Mocht je ze nog nooit gebreid hebben, dan kan het handig zijn om dit te oefenen.
  

Fortresse

In de vorige post kon je lezen dat er nogal wat vooraf kan gaan, voordat er eindelijk een definitief ontwerp tot stand komt.

En soms... is dat niet zo. Dan is de opdracht zo duidelijk, plus een beetje geluk met de geëiste onderdelen, en dan is een ontwerp 'zo maar'  klaar.

In the previous post, you could read about the development some designs. It can take a long time to work it all out and come to a final result.

And sometimes.... you don't have to work so hard. The brief is so clear and with a bit of added luck with the demands, a design can just roll of the needles.

En wanneer je dan ook nog met 100% zijde mag werken is dat geen straf. De vraag was of ik een shawl wilde ontwerpen met een thema; Zwartsluis. De opdrachtgeefster was van plan om een winkel te openen en een thema shawl zou dan best mooi zijn voor in de etalage. 

Er is veel water in de omgeving en het schild/vlag van Zwartsluis bood ook opties. (zie eerste foto!) 

And when you háve to work with 100% silk, you don't need to ask twice. The main point of the brief was that the shawl had to have a theme: Zwartsluis. The commissioner-lady was about to open up a yarn store there and a themed shawl would look very good in the shop window.

And there's lots of water nearby and the town's shield  gave me some options too. (First picture).

Dus ik had bedacht dat ik zou beginnen met het Schild: blokken in recht en averecht. Dan zou dat zachtjes overlopen in golven van 'water' en naar de 'oever' en riet/gras. Omdat de shawl rechthoekig zou worden, leek het me leuk om voor de verandering maar aan één lange zijde een kantrandje in te breien.

I thought it would be nice to start with the blocks of the shield in knit and purl blocks. That would transform into waves (water) and a bank (water edge) and grass/reed. Because I chose for a rectangled shape, I thought it would be nice to only add a lace edging on one long side of the shawl. 

Hier en daar een klein beetje aanpassen tijdens het breien, omdat hier ook het ontwerp weer iets groter was dan het garen toe liet (800m/100gr). Uiteindelijk een ontwerp wat prima is voor een beginnende kantbrei(st)er. Maar ook leuk voor alle andere kantbreisters. (foto onder: bijna klaar!). 

It needed a bit of tweeking during knitting because the yarn wouldn't allow all the ideas (875y/100gr)
In the end, it's a great project for beginners in lace knitting. But, even interesting for all other laceknitters, ofcourse. (picture above: not quite ready!).

 Door de zijde krijgt deze zacht lila / mauve tint een beetje extra glans en het draagt ook nog eens erg lekker. De shawl is van gemiddelde lengte (150cm) en je zou hem langer kunnen maken (extra streng garen!) door bijvoorbeeld bepaalde patroonblokken een keer extra te herhalen.

The silk gives this mauve a bit extra shine. The shawl is 59" long and if you want to, (extra yarn!) you can add more repeats of certain parts to add length.

 Soms krijg je op onverwachte momenten een onverwacht telefoontje. Het nummer op de telefoon gaf aan dat het uit Amsterdam kwam..... Zou het waar zijn?? Ja!!!

 Sometimes you get an unexpected phonecall at an unexpected time. The number on the phone stated it came from Amsterdam.... Really?? YES...

 De Afstap zal zeer binnenkort hun 40 jarig (!!!!) jubileum vieren en of ik een shawl wilde ontwerpen... JA! Natuurlijk. Binnen een week had ik een pakketje vol met Rowan Kidsilk 
Ik ging meteen aan het werk, ook al had ik nog de hele zomer. Gelukkig had ik al een idee met een patroon waar ik mee wilde werken.

 De Afstap will be celebrating their 40 year anniversary very soon and if there was a possibility that I could design a shawl with their favorite yarn. YES! Within the week I got a box full of Rowan Kidsilk. I got started rightaway eventhough I still had all summer. There was a pattern I had wanted to use and it turned out to be very fitting for this design.

 Na een paar weken stuurde ik de eerste foto's en ze vonden het wel erg mooi. Maar... Of ik ook het cijfer 40 er in kon verwerken. Het IS tenslotte een jubileum en 40 jaar voor een breiwinkel vind ik zelf ERG bijzonder...

 After a few weeks I send them some pictures of the first results and they were happy. But... they wanted to have the number 40 incorporated into the shawl. After all, it IS an anniversary shawl. And in my opinion 40 years is VERY remarkable for a yarn shop.

En dit is hem! 4T = four-tee = 40 = veertig!

As it happens week 40 will be party week at the shop; each day there will be lots of activities and I'll be there thursday October 3rd. You can drop by anytime! 

Blocking lace / Kant opspannen

Stel je hebt net een prachtige shawl met kantpatronen gebreid, hij is eindelijk af en ligt als een onduidelijk wolkje in je handen.
Say you've knitted a beautiful shawl with lace patterns, it's finally done and it's like an undefined cloud in your hands.

 Je wast hem voorzichtig met een wasmiddel dat geschikt is voor het garen wat je gebruikt hebt. Er zijn een paar 'regels': gewoon in het water laten liggen, niet te lang (kwartiertje, half uur) en niet te veel bewegen. Het water is handwarm of iets warmer.

 You wash the shawl very caryfully with a detergent that is suitable for the yarn you've used. There are still some 'rules' ; leave it in the water, don't stirr too much and don't leave it in the water too long (15-30minutes). The water is luke warm or a bit warmer.

 Haal het uit het water en laat het uitdruppen in je handen. NIET WRINGEN! Leg voorzichtig in een handdoek en druk het water er uit.
Take your shawl out of the water carefully and let it drip out excess water in your hands. DO NOT WRING! Lay out with care on a towel and press out the water.

 Leg je shawl uit op het bed, matras of schuim waar je de shawl gaat opspannen. Zorg er voor dat je de shawl NOOIT aan de punten vasthoud. Het garen zou kunnen knappen. Ondersteun altijd wanneer je de shawl over grote stukken moet verplaatsen.
Lay out your shawl on a bed, matras or foam on which you're going to pin the shawl down. Be aware NOT EVER to hold the shawl by the corners or single points. The yarn could snap due to the weight. Support the shawl when you're moving it over a large section.

 Pak de lussen op met een block draad of brei naald. Je kunt ook de punten pakken. Pak NIET de laatste lus, maar altijd een setje waar een opening is. Het garen kan knappen (zelfs zijde!) als je maar 1 lusje pakt.
Kun je maar 1 lus pakken, span dan eerst los op en trek later de shawl 'strak'.

 Pick up loops on the sides of the shawl or pick up the points. NEVER take just one loop, the yarn will snap when you block it (too) hard. If possible, pick up a set of stitches or in a yarn over. Or, when you only have loops, pick up the loops and stretch out. You can adjust tension later.

 Dit is een driehoek swatch dus ik kon de bovenste lussen in een keer oppakken. Anders begin je op de hoekpunten en dan werk je iedere keer naar het midden van de shawl. Halveer telkens het stuk waar je mee bezig bent.

 This is a triangular swatch and I was able to pick up all loops at once. Otherwise start at the corners and work your way to the centre. Devide the length you're blocking continuesly.

Door de kantsteken die je gebruikt hebt, komen ze nu écht op elkaar te liggen en de omslagen komen mooi open te staan. Het katnt komt tot leven.
By using the lace stitches, they really lay on top of eachother after blocking. Yarn overs pop open and make the lace come alive.

 Dan ziet het er uiteindelijk zo uit. Netjes en niet te strak.

In the end it will look like this, not to tight but all stitches are clearly visible.
