Eeuwige Liefde .....\./.... Eternal Love

Soms is het zoiets kleins in je hoofd. Een idee. Dat er om schrééuwt om uitgevoerd te worden.. Uitstellen heeft geen zin, het moet. Ook al heb je eigenlijk geen tijd..
Het was tijd voor een zusje van Love on the Edge; klein, schattig, en delicaat..

 Sometimes it's something very small inside your head. An idea. One that is screaming to get out. Delay is of no use, it múst be knit. Eventhough there is no time to do it.
It was about time to make this little sister of Love on the Edge; cute, small and delicate.

 Ingrediënten: Hartjes (natúúrlijk), fijne kantpatronen en de goede kleuren, extra dun garen en heel veel liefde...

 Ingredients: Hearts (ofcourse), fine lace patterns, the right colours, extra fine lace yarn and lots of love...

Dit kleine shawltje maakt gebruik van de eigenschappen van Shetland Kant dus je hoeft zelfs nog minder te breien dan je denkt. Bovendien neemt het van elke kleur maar héél weinig garen, dus als je nog wat hebt liggen wat over is van een andere shawl...

This little Shawlette makes perfect use of the characteristics of Shetland lace, that means you don't even have to knit 'all that you see..'. Besides, it takes only a few yards of each colour so if you have any leftovers from other lace shawls...

Koud. Heel koud. Moet ook, want het is winter. Ik loop 4x in de week met de post en heb héél snel een muts op. Man nam er een mee uit Zweden en een jaar later liep iedereen er mee. Op zich niet erg, maar leuk is anders.

Cold. Very cold. It should be, it's winter. I'm delivering mail 4 times a week and am wearing a hat very quickly into the season. Husband had brought me one from Sweden and a year later everybody had one. No problem, but I like something original.

En ik had wat vrije tijd. De Sixareen Kep had ik in 3 dagen gebreid, maar daar was de hele bovenkant effen. Dat gaat veel sneller. Het patroon wat al een tijdje in mijn queue stond op Ravelry was ook van Kate Davies en had over de hele muts patroon. Ik heb amper voorraad voor dit soort projecten, dus dat werd kiezen.

I had some free time and remembered I had knitted the Sixareen Kep in 3 days. Having said that, that has a top with no pattern and the one I chose to knit has a pattern all over. This was designed by Kate Davies too. The thing is; I hardly have any stash to use for such projects. What to use??

 Op het laatste moment nog geswitched van kleuren. Ik wilde de lichtblauw met de donkerwit. Dat heb ik toen gecombineerd met de echte wit. De rode en gele kleuren en de indigo (lichtblauw) zijn van het zelfde garen (Heritage) als de Kep, de wit komt van de Rams en Yowes deken en de donkerblauw komt uit een goodiebag van Jamieson & Smith; die kregen we bij de Ravelry Meet Up tijdens de Shetland Wool Week...

At the last minute I switched colours. I wanted the lightblue with the darkwhite, but instead I took the real white. The red, yellow and creamwhite are from the Heritage Collection, the white is left over from the Rams and Yowes Blanket and the dark blue is from the goodiebag we recieved at the Ravelry Meet Up evening during Shetland Wool Week.

Zoals je ziet heb ik de muts maar op TWEE naalden staan. Ik brei hem namelijk op de breiriem. Dat is zó handig en ik brei veel sneller. Het werk wordt ook veel gelijkmatiger.

As you can see I have the hat on only TWO needles. I'm using my knittingbelt. Very handy and I'm knitting much faster. And the project is knitted more even.

Dus... was deze muts in 4 dagen af. Zaterdag begonnen en maandag al de punt er op. Die had ik niet zo mooi gemaakt; die heb ik uitgehaald. Dinsdagmorgen heb ik een nieuwe top er aangebreid (niet volgens patroon...).

So.. this hat was knitted in 4 days. Casted on Saturday and Monday the tip was knit. I messed it up; frogged it and reknitted it my way Tuesdaymorning. (not the given pattern).

Dinsdagmiddag moest ik met de post lopen en had ik lekker warm mijn muts op. Hij is nog niet gewassen, het garen is nog niet open gaan staan; ik vermoed dat hij dan nóg beter zit.

Tuesday afternoon I had to deliver the mail and I was wearing my hat. It's not washed yet, the yarn hasn't opened up yet. I suspect it will be even warmer after that and will fit perfectly.

Een héle goede reden om dus meteen nóg maar een muts te breien: Snawheid.

Plans

The  plan to go to Shetland was to see some lace for real. Not just from pictures, but with my own eyes. I have been staring at internet pictures for too long.

I wanted to go to the Shetland Museum and Archives in Lerwick, the Heritage Centre in Unst and any other place where there would be lace to see and take in.

But the island had other plans. As you have already noticed, the posts I entered so far have all been about the island. Rocks. Moors. Ocean. Roads. Silence. Not a word about Lace.

Monday I did get a quick look on lace in Lerwick, just before the workshop of Kate Davies would begin. Someone pulled out a display and there it was! The shawl I had only known from the internet and even had made a swatch from that picture! Can you see my reflection? It was so small. I kind of freaked out. Normally I would take time to sit, watch, take in, make notes and sit in admiration.

I made this swatch 'ages' ago and now I saw that my swatch was 'fat'. Not even CLOSE to being as fine as the original. But that's okay.

Or the Weddingshawl I had seen on the website of the Archive Museum and used as inspiration for my design for Jamieson & Smith: the Shetland Bound. (not bound as in tied up, more like: on my way to Shetland).

I started noticing I didn't stick to the plan to take it all in. Only at home I found out I had also seen the Love Darg Shawl original when I looked back at the pictures at home.

I changed it a bit, because I wanted to add some hearts to the pattern (in one border).

The workshop by Kate started, finished and I was on my way back to find Amy. Didn't go back to see the shawls again for that day.
Soon it was Wednesday. After we'd been to Sandness, the evening had been planned for Talking about Lace with Mary Kay, Gudrun Johnston and myself. The designs by Gudrun are well known by many, but the fine lace by Mary was very new to me. It was VERY delicate; like knitting with hair. Only 2 ply. (sheep)Hair. Handspun.

The next thing I knew it was already Thursday and we were on our way to Unst. Expectations were again véry high. The lace there was on the internet, but only photographed by people that have been there. Time to take my own pictures.

After a wonderfull trip, actually having a great time on board of the ferry to Yell and to Unst, thanks to the travelpills, we stepped out of the car at Muness. We had seen a sign:

 

It's a lovely little castle with a grimm past.
Back in the car, to Haroldswick: Heritage Centre. We drove past it once, in search of it...
Parked the car, went in, nice and warm. Hanged our coats and went in for a look.
I think my brain went left, while I went right. There was lace on display. THE LACE I CAME FOR (well, almost). OLD. FINE. Delicate. Handknit. The party begun.
I recognised a lót of patterns, but in an order I'd never seen. Some of the shawls were so delicate, we weren't even allowed to take pictures. The lady told us, she had one of her own, an real heirloom, and could photograph that one. Even finer than the lace by Mary Kay.

 Thanks to Amy, I now own my own knittingbelt. It's working out great!

Drawers pulled out show the most amazing garments in fine lace; socks, gloves and tops.

I had promised friends to also take a look at a shawl on display in the kabinets. The Williamson Stole. We have been working and swatching very hard to recreate it:

But it wasn't there anymore! The kind lady told us that shawls could only be on display for 2 years maximum and then were put back for several years. They are so delicate, the light takes away from it's structure and holes fall into the lace.
We did ask, and one of the ladies was so kind to help us find it. Taking out rolls of old lace shawls. The Williams Stole is still illusive, but we saw some darn fine lace. Imagne it being knit in a badly lit room, 100 years ago!

I was in luck. There were several other pretty shawls to see.
After I had calmed down, we had a lunch with the other ladies visiting and chatting with the locals about lots of stuff.

Amy told me we could do a bit of walking at Hermaness. It would be a short drive and decide to take a walk or not. I really wanted to see Muckle Flugga, but after a good hour walk, I realised that wouldn't be an option. I have to be happy with the postcard I bought at Baltasound.

And it was great! Do you notice the box with the blue top? Open the lid and there are folders with information about the location! And a guestbook! The piece of concrete on the left is an eyesoar compared to the two incripted rocks. We opened the gate and had the road to follow.

The brown on the left is dead bracken (fern). These were wet hills, pretty high up and again: silence. We did meet some sheep; one dead, others alive... hihi.

It was amazing, just like Sandness and Eshaness. I kind of 'understood' why it's said that people here 'are' frugal. You don't have a lot to begin with, so you better hold on to it, incase there comes a time when you don't have ány...

As you can see; we did A LOT. I can hardly fit all the pictures on my computer. My head is filled with impressions, thoughts, ideas, feelings, questions. I'm still thinking about it every day.. Not in a bad way, but it was an experience of (my) a lifetime. Doing something for this day, having a great time, and doing something different the next day, and having a great time again!
The weather was great. We've seen hails of rain, clouds, sun, blue sky, NORTHERN LIGHTS (although briefly). I dó want to go back. But I first have to get my head around this trip.

The travel pills did their magic again on the way back. I shed a little tear when we lifted of Sumburgh Airport, sad to go.. On Edinburgh we had a 4 hour lay-over and hung lazy on the chairs of the waiting area. Time to go home..

The Shetland Addiction II

Zoals je weet, brei ik heel graag shetland kant. Heel veel patronen zitten gewoon in mijn hoofd en dat vergemakkelijkt het breien. Daardoor wordt het leuker en gaat het nóg sneller. 

Mijn nieuwsgierigheid zorgt er echter voor dat ik nog meer wil weten en leren. 

Dus speur ik de site van het Shetland Museum af naar 'nieuwe' steken of combinaties. Gelukkig ben ik nog láng niet uitgeleerd.

As you know, I really love to knit shetland lace. A lot of patterns are stuck in my head and that makes knitting them a lot easier. And thát makes it more fun and even more quick to knit. 

My curiosity makes me want to learn and do even more. So I cruize on the site of the Shetland Museum to find 'new' combination of stitches and patterns. 

I'm in luck, there is a lot left to learn.

Dit kleine lapje is een patroon wat uit een bruidsshawl komt. Ik kon het in geen van mijn boeken terug vinden, dus dat werd lekker zelf uitzoeken hoe het is opgebouwd. Shetland patronen zijn over het algemeen niet moeilijk, het is alleen even nadenken hóe ze zijn opgebouwd. Vooral een kwestie van veel tellen en uitproberen.

This little swatch is a pattern coming from a bridal veil. (the dark part). I couldn't find this in any of my books, so I had to find out for myself. Shetland patterns often are not very difficult but it's the trick to get them in the right order.
Mainly trial and error..

Dit proefje is een duidelijk voorbeeld van mijn geklooi. Eerst proberen de vorm goed er in te krijgen, dan de middenvakjes toevoegen. En daarna de juiste vorm er in binnen het aantal mogelijke steken. Bovenin is het bijna gelukt. Dit is gewoon een losse rand, die hoort niet bij de Bruidsshawl. (foto origineel Shetland Museum).

 This is a clear example of my attempt to reknit this edging. First to try to get the shape right, then adding the center part and shaping. In the third triangle I almost got it right.

En heel stiekum ben ik begonnen met wéér een shawl van foto af na te breien. Op Nieuwjaarsdag begonnen met tellen en uitzoeken, proefjes gebreid en een chart gemaakt.

Secretly I've started with knitting another shawl from picture. Newyearsday I was busy charting, counting and swatching. 

Eerst de rand gebreid, en nu bezig met de border. Toen ik later nog een keer terug las, blijkt het om een heel klein shawltje te gaan, misschien maar 20 cm breed! Dat wordt die van mij deze keer niet. Ik vind het garen zo mooi, dat ik gewoon nóg een keer een shetland shawl wilde breien met in deze kleur.

First knitted the edging and now working on the border. When I went back to the site and reread the caption, I found out the original is a merely 20 cm wide! My shawl will not be that small this time. I did grab the yarn I like to knit shetland lace with best, i really like the colours.

All over the place

Zoals jullie misschien wel kunnen begrijpen gaat het hier een beetje op en neer. Drukke tijden met veel geregel en rustige tijden waarop je lekker in kan storten.
Zo gaat het met het breien ook. Schreef ik een paar dagen geleden nog enthousiast over de ColourMart Spring Contest 2011 en mijn Lerwick Lace, hij ligt nu al dagen in een stil hoekje. Ik heb het middenpaneel al wel afgekregen, en ben al begonnen met de 2e rand... tot ik afgeleid werd.

As you might be able to understand, things are going up and down in our house. Busy times with lots of appointments, telephonecalls, arrangements and stuff, and quieter times where you can crash.
That how it's going with the knitting too. Did I write about the ColourMart Spring Contest a few days ago, and my Lerwick Lace shawl? It's in a lonely corner of the couch right now for days. I did finish the centerpanel already (extra lacy) and started the second edging.. that is untill I got distracted.
Zo heb ik dit garen speciaal laten verven. Ik zag het op Etsy maar het was in sokkengewicht. Dus overleg gepleegd met de shop-owner en ze heeft het voor mij op kantgewicht geverfd. In het echt is het nog iets meer olijfkleurig. Samen 1 streng van ruim 1200 meter.
I had this yarn specially dyed for myself. I had spotted it on Etsy, but it was in fingering. So convo-ed with the shopowner and she dyed it for me in laceweight. In reality it is a bit more olive coloured. Together they make a 1300 y skein.
Vorig jaar heb ik het ontwerp gemaakt; Little Apples. En wonder boven wonder; mensen vinden het leuk en er is zelfs al iemand die er 2 gebreid heeft! Ik had op de Breidag van haar en haar een prachtige bol écht Estlands garen gekregen; ideaal voor een echt estlands patroon en een mogelijkheid om mijn eigen ontwerp te promoten. Dus ook meteen maar begonnen.
Last year I made a design; Little Apples. And low and behold, people like it and there is even someone who has already knitted 2 shawls with my design. On the Breidag I was gifted a ball by her and her of original Estonian yarn, perfect for a original estonian pattern and a chance to promote my own design.
Van de week zag ik op Ravelry dat ik deze shawl nog niet in hibernation had gezet, en ik vroeg mezelf af waarom niet. Ik had er al heel lang niet aan gewerkt. Zo als hier boven zag het er vorige week nog uit, hier onder zoals het er gister uit zag. Het is de Spring Shawl, ik heb dus nog een héle lange weg te gaan.

Last week on Ravelry, I noticed I hadn't put this shawl in Hibernation yet. I was wondering why because I hadn't worked on it for a long time. The picture above is how it looked last week, and picture below is how it looks now. It is the Spring Shawl so I still have a lóng way to go.
Er staan ook nog een paar opdrachten aan te komen, een paar lange dagen met Chris in het ziekenhuis; dus geen idee hoe dit verder gaat.
Of is dit nu wat ze noemen 'wild breien' ....

I also have a few commissions coming in, a couple of long days with Chris in the hospital, so I have no idea how this will continue.
Or.. is this what they mean by 'wild knitting'...

Beurs

Oh, ik heb het zo naar mijn zin gehad op de Handwerkbeurs in Zwolle. Ik was er op zaterdag en ik heb begrepen dat het verschrikkelijk druk is geweest. Ik was er zaterdag vrij vroeg; half 11. Geen lange rijen bij de kassa, ondanks dat ik geen kaartje van te voren had gekocht.
I went to the craftfair in Zwolle last Saturday and I had a great time! It had been pretty hectic on Friday, so I've heard, but saturdaymorning had no waiting lines at the doors.
Deze garens zijn van Bart-Francis: Cashsilk voor de groene en Qiviut voor de grijze.
Als eerste ging ik opzoek naar de stand van Blossom Fibers. Daar had ik de laatste keer dat ik geweest ben, geen geld meer voor, en ik wilde al heel lang het garen eens proberen. Jammer genoeg was er van kleur 14 nog maar 1 cone, dus die nam ik mee. (hier onder)
At first I went to the booth of Blossom Fibers. The last fair I ran out of money before I got there, and I really wanted some of their yummie yarn. To bad the colour I wanted was almost sold out, so I ran of with the last cone. (below).

Toen ben ik aangeschoven bij de Dutch Knitters Café. Wat was dát leuk. Met heel veel mensen gesproken, vragen beantwoord, doorverwezen naar stands, verteld over workshops, chocolaatjes gegeten, werk bewonderd en allemaal Ravelers gezien die een button kwamen halen. En ze kwamen mijn shawl bewonderen. Voor ik het wist was het al drie uur! Ik ben heel blij dat ik iedereen ontmoet heb, jammer dat ik anderen net mis ben gelopen. Misschien een andere keer!
Then I worked my way on to the table of the Dutch Knitters Café. Thát was fun! Lots of people with questions, remarks, forwarded to other booths, workshop talk and handing out chocolates. And friens who came to collect a Ravelry Button. People admired my shawl too!
Bewijs dat het een echte wedding ring shawl is.. Mijn eigen trouwring kan na al die jaren (16) niet meer af, maar mijn andere ring lukte wel.
Proof that it is a real weddingring shawl! My own weddingring doesn't come of anymore (after 16 years) but my other ring did just fine.

Over 1 maand ben ik aan de beurt! Dan mag ik workshops gaan geven op de Breidag en Haakdag in Nieuwegein. 's Morgens (vrijdag en zaterdag) geef ik kantbreien en 's middags true lace breien.
Dus... schrijf je in en doe mee! Ik kijk er enorm naar uit om het je te leren.

Op de breidag sta ik ook in de spotlight! Je kunt daar dan verscheidene van mijn handgebreide shawls zien en van dichtbij bekijken. (niet aankomen natuurlijk).
