Brae

Vorig jaar stond ik op de MidWinterWol in Winschoten. Een heel ander publiek dan op de meeste beurzen waar ik kom; spinners, wevers, kantklossers, vilters enz. Erg interessant want zo leer je weer wat bij, maar voor het publiek was ik de enige met gebreide items.
Ik stond er ook om de breiriem te demonstreren, maar door de kou in de hal ging dat niet zo soepel.
Anyway... er was erg veel belangstelling voor mijn mini kraampje met gebreide shawls. 

Last year I was part of a craft fair in Winschoten; MidWinterWol. A whole different set of people due to the set up of the Fair. Weavers, spinners, bobbin lace and felters. Very interesting and lots to learn. For the public I was the 'only' one with knit items and they found it very pretty and my little booth was quite busy.
I was also there to demonstrate the knittingbelt but due to the low temperature in the hall that proved to be a bit difficult. 

Ik heb daar kaartjes uitgedeeld met alle informatie en er was een mevrouw die wel belangstelling had. Ik mocht voor haar een shawl breien. Ik heb het patroon een beetje aangepast zodat het een mooi geheel werd met een mooie rand. 

I've given out some business cards and one lady was so interested that she made an appointment to meet me. She gave me a pattern to work with and I designed it so it would make a lovely shawl and pretty edging. 

Het bijzondere was eigenlijk dat ze wel een ERG lange shawl wilde: twee meter vijftig lang. Wow. Dat heb ik nog nooit gedaan. Alhoewel de Love Darg ook in de richting komt met 2,2m, is het voor je gevoel eindeloos lang. 

The special thing with this commission was that it had to be very, very long: 100". I've never knit such a long shawl, although the Love Darg came close with 90" but it still sounds like a lot. 

Sinds dat ik het graften aardig onder de knie heb, kies ik er sneller voor. Bovendien, wanneer je deze shawl draagt, loopt het patroon op dezelfde manier naar boven.

Since I have become pretty handy in grafting 2 parts, I tend to choose it as a design option more often. Besides, while wearing the shawl, the pattern runs up the same way. 

Omdat ik beide delen tegelijkertijd heb gebreid; zo is de 'tension' gelijk en zijn beide delen even groot was ik best snel klaar! Door het zachte garen, wat de mevrouw op de MidWinterWol had gekocht, is het werkelijk een weelde van zwarte zachtheid om je heen...

Because I have worked both halves at the same time, so knitting tension is exactly the same and both parts have the same dimensions, I was done pretty quick. The soft yarn the lady had purchased at the MidWinterWol fair, makes it a luscious shawl to wear.

Op de achterkant wordt ook in patroon gebreid, maar niet met kantpatronen.

Blue

 Blauw. Prachtig blauw. Met een paar kraaltjes. (Hyrna Herborgar met extra waaier herhaling)

 Blue. Beautiful blue... Sometimes you only have to add a few beads. (Hyrna Herborgar  added enough repeats for an extra fan)

De kleur met (volgens mij) de meeste tinten! Zoveel variaties om te proberen.

 I think Blue has the most shades/hues. It's gorgeous and so exciting to try them all (Aeolian)

 Sinds april 2013 heb ik een spinnewiel (Kromski Minstrel) en na heel veel oefenen is het me gelukt om een breibare draad te spinnen en twijnen! Ik heb nog geen idee wat ik er mee ga maken... (370m getwijnd)

In April 2013 I got my first spinningwheel (Kromski Minstrel) and after a lot of practise I finally spun a knitable yarn (404y twisted)

 In zijde is het ook erg mooi! Het garen geeft een prachtige glans en het breit ook zo lekker. (Zitron Filisilk)

 Patroon? Mercury in Retrograde... Erg leuk en na een paar rijen heb je het heel snel in de vingers!

 Pattern? Mercury in Retrograde... A lovely pattern that can be knit very quickly.

En als afsluiter een eenzame handschoen. Er is er nog maar no. 1... kom maar niet toe aan no. 2.

A lot happened

Wat een jaar... 2013.

Wat is er véél gebeurd! Wat ben ik lui geweest. Wat heb ik mezelf 'overtroffen'... en mezelf teleurgesteld.
Enórme heimwee naar Shetland, uitdagende opdrachten en ontwerpen. Nieuwe mensen ontmoet en publiek gevonden.
En nu is het al tijd om 'terug' te kijken. Eigenlijk wil ik dat nog helemaal niet, ben nog met van alles bezig. Maar ik ben ook een béétje moe.

1. Ik heb leren spinnen; wat een belevenis! Dun, heel dik, zijde, wol, glans, twijnen, navajo-plyen... Méér! 
2. Ik ben enorm veel gaan breien met meerdere kleuren, zelfs in kantpatronen! Dat had ik nog niet zo veel gedaan.

3. Nog meer kantbreien vanaf foto's. Ik was al druk bezig maar in september liep het uit de hand...
4. Op de MidWinterWol Markt in Winschoten een héél nieuw publiek ontmoet. Nog meer te leren. (Presenteren)
5. Durf ik al te plannen voor volgend jaar om naar Shetland te gaan, of te kúnnen?
6. Nieuwe workshops ontwikkelen; nog meer technieken leren aan nieuwsgierige leerlingen
7. Ik sta in een tijdschrift (Simply Breien Lace Collectie), in een agenda (CreaAgenda) én in een prachtig boek over de geschiedenis van textiel 800 jaar v.Chr. tot heden van Shetland! (echt!!!)

What a year! 2013...

A lot has happened. I've been very lazy. Knitted beyond belief. Disappointed myself. Terribly homesick, wanting to go back to Shetland. Developping new designs, realizing new commissions. Met new people and a new audience.
It's time to look back. But I don't want to, yet. Still busy with a lot of projects and ideas. I'm also a bit tired.

1. I've learned how to spin. That was exciting! Twisting, plying, thin, bulky, shiny silk.. and a lot more!
2. I've started to knit with colours, more than one in a single project. That was new. Even in Lace! Didn't do that before.
3. More knitting and developping lace from pictures. I had been before but in September it totally got out of control.

4. At a big Craft Fair in Winschoten (Wool Market) I was introduced to a whole new audience. Such nice people and more things were learned. (Presentation!)
5. Do I dare to think about another trip to Shetland? Can I go or is it too expensive?
6. Writing new workshops for eager to learn students.
7. I'm published! In a magazine (Simply Breien Lace Collection), in an agenda (I'm week 4) and I'm on a picture in the book about the history of textiles in Shetland 800 B.C. until now (I really am!).

Je weet eigelijk nooit helemaal wát het nieuwe jaar gaat brengen; dat is spannend maar ook 'eng'. Ik ga (hopelijk) een paar erg mooie shawls die nu nog op de naalden staan afmaken, ik hoop nog véle shawls in opdracht te mogen maken, workshops geven en daarmee te sparen voor een nieuwe reis naar Shetland.

You never quite know whát the new year has in store for you. That is both exciting ánd a bit scary. I hope to finish several gorgeous shawl that are still a work in progress, hope to make people happy with the shawls I knit for them and giving workshops, so I can save money to go to Shetland again.

Maar allereerst! Een HELE fijne Kerst en een veilig, gelukkig, gezond en geweldig 2014 voor JOU! Ik ben blij dat je iedere keer mijn blog leest/volgt. Ik zie je volgend jaar!

Ripple

 In de Lente kreeg ik weer een opdracht om met zijde te werken. In de loop van de tijd ben ik eigenlijk best gek op zijde geworden. Het heeft gewicht, glans en het valt mooi. In het engels heet dat 'drape' en in het nederlands is het toch moeilijk om daar een goed woord of een goede omschrijving voor te vinden.

Before the summer I got an assignment to work with silk again. In these past few years I've become very fond of silk. It has some weight to it, it drapes very nicely and it has that shine to it.

 Het was (alweer) de Powder Silk van Bart & Francis uit Belgie. Het is net niet wit en het heeft een stevige draad. Héérlijk om mee te werken. Ik had al een tijdje een proeflapje en na goedkeuring ben ik er mee aan de slag gegaan.

It is (again) the Powder Silk by Bart & Francis from Belgium. It's off white and it has a firm size of yarn. I really like working with this. I already had a swatch and after approval I went to work.

De kleine golfjes lopen uit in een prachtig blad patroon wat vooral heel mooi uit komt in de punt. Je begint boven aan en breit naar de rand toe. In dit patroon leer je ook een 'nieuwe' techniek; de gespiegelde versie van de 'brei in de voorkant en achterkant van de steek).

The little waves end in a gorgeous leaf pattern. Which comes out best in the point. You start at the top and work down to the edging. In this pattern you'll learn all about the mirrored version of the 'knit in front and back of the stitch'.

Pattern: Ripple
Yarn: Powder Silk by Bart & Francis 500m or 2 cones
Needle: US 4 or 3,5mm
Charted, some rows are written out (mid-section).
69cm/27” at the centre point and 150cm/57” wide

Afgelopen donderdag 3 oktober was het mijn beurt om deel te mogen nemen aan het 40e jubileum van De Afstap in Amsterdam.

Last thursday October 3rd it was my turn to join in the celebrations of the 40 year anniversary of the Afstap in Amsterdam.

Mijn ontwerp 4T was er al en ik mocht andere projecten presenteren en de héle middag kwebbelen over het kantbreien. Dát heb ik dus ook gedaan. Op de foto staat mijn mond eventjes stil...

My design 4T was already present and I got to show off some other projects and talk ALL day about laceknitting. So I did! In the picture my mouth is shut... for a while at least.

Op de paspoppen hingen een paar van mijn shawls: Diamonds are forever (wit), Aith en The Love Darg Prize Shawl (blauw).

On the 'dolls' were a couple of shawls I've made: Diamonds are forever (white), Aith and The Love Darg Prize Shawl (blue).

Ik had het zo druk met vertellen en bewonderen van de projecten die de bezoekers zelf hadden gemaakt en kwamen laten zien, dat ik amper tijd had om zelf nog even door de winkel te gaan... Gelukkig was er na nog tijd genoeg om dat even te doen.
Ik kreeg van Hanneke een erg leuk boekje wat ze zelf heeft geschreven over het breien van tassen. Ik denk dat ik het tasje ga maken van de allerlaatste bladzijde! Dank je wel Hanneke.

 I was só busy talking and chatting, I didn't have the time to check out the store! Luckily after closing time I did a bit of snooping around. Hanneke gave me a little booklet she had written about knitted purses (sorry, only in dutch). I think I'll be making the little purse from the very last page. Thank you, Hanneke.

Dit boekje past goed bij het boekje wat ik al had gekregen (ja, soms heb je geluk!) van Carla en Hilly: Warme handen. Ik heb hier nog niets uit gebreid, maar dank zij hun goede beschrijving van alle technieken kan ik nu WEL met kleuren breien. Dank je wel!

This little booklet goes very well with another booklet I got (for free, yes, sometimes I am a lucky girl) from Carla and Hilly: Warm Hands (YES, it's in english as well).
Haven't made a project from it, but I DID learn to work with colours thanks to their excellent description of (several) the techniques! Thank you girls!

En toen kwam ik thuis. Héél laat. En daar lag een pakketje. En ja! Nóg een boekje... En wat voor een... OTTO BEYER! In het nederlands (ik kan niet zo goed duits). Iemand dacht dat ik daar wel blij mee zou zijn. Reken maar! Dank je wel Mieke.

Then it was time to go home. I was home véry late. And when I got there, a package was waiting for me. YES.. another booklet. This time from OTTO BEYER! Lace... (all in dutch, happy with that because my german isn't that good).
Someone thought this would make me very happy and it did. Thank you Mieke.

Soms tref je het gewoon enorm!

Sometimes you just are lucky!

 Soms krijg je op onverwachte momenten een onverwacht telefoontje. Het nummer op de telefoon gaf aan dat het uit Amsterdam kwam..... Zou het waar zijn?? Ja!!!

 Sometimes you get an unexpected phonecall at an unexpected time. The number on the phone stated it came from Amsterdam.... Really?? YES...

 De Afstap zal zeer binnenkort hun 40 jarig (!!!!) jubileum vieren en of ik een shawl wilde ontwerpen... JA! Natuurlijk. Binnen een week had ik een pakketje vol met Rowan Kidsilk 
Ik ging meteen aan het werk, ook al had ik nog de hele zomer. Gelukkig had ik al een idee met een patroon waar ik mee wilde werken.

 De Afstap will be celebrating their 40 year anniversary very soon and if there was a possibility that I could design a shawl with their favorite yarn. YES! Within the week I got a box full of Rowan Kidsilk. I got started rightaway eventhough I still had all summer. There was a pattern I had wanted to use and it turned out to be very fitting for this design.

 Na een paar weken stuurde ik de eerste foto's en ze vonden het wel erg mooi. Maar... Of ik ook het cijfer 40 er in kon verwerken. Het IS tenslotte een jubileum en 40 jaar voor een breiwinkel vind ik zelf ERG bijzonder...

 After a few weeks I send them some pictures of the first results and they were happy. But... they wanted to have the number 40 incorporated into the shawl. After all, it IS an anniversary shawl. And in my opinion 40 years is VERY remarkable for a yarn shop.

En dit is hem! 4T = four-tee = 40 = veertig!

Swatchen

Breien is zo´n leuke bezigheid dat ik in het begin niet kon wachten om te beginnen.
Helaas leidde dat nog wel eens tot onafgemaakte projecten. Het garen was niet mooi genoeg, te dun, te weinig of het patroon leende zich tóch niet om nog 300x te herhalen..

Knitting is so much fun, that in the early days I couldn't wait to get started.
Unfortunately that resulted in unfinished projects. The yarn wasn't up for the job, or was not sufficient, too thin or the pattern didn't appeal enough for more than 300 repeats...

En dit is een verhaal apart.. Ik wil soms zó graag een patroontje gebruiken. Ik schrijf het op terwijl ik het brei, maar na een tijdje merk ik dat dit ondoenlijk is voor sommige breisters.
In dit lapje wisselen het breien in de voorkant en achterkant van het werk zich af. Voorkant in recht, achterkant in averecht, maar daardoor bijna onmogelijk om te charten. Opnieuw in ander garen is dan niet altijd een oplossing.. Hoe mooi ook..

This one has a story of its own. There are some pattern screaming to be worked. I write while knitting it, and then discover that it's so difficult that it will be undoable for some knitters. In this swatch, front and back patterns are worked, in stockinette. But that means some repeats are so irregular that charting is near to impossible. Trying it in a different yarn doesn't help. Eventhough it looks só pretty..

Andere keren staan patronen braaf in een hoekje van een boekje te wachten. Je bent er al 100x aan voorbij gebladerd en dan plotseling voel je dat het tóch moet proberen..

Other times the patterns are quietly waiting in a corner of a book. You've browsed passed it a 100 times and then suddenly you háve to try it. (Crown, Heirloom Knitting).

En dan zijn er nog héle speciale swatchen...
Wanneer ik me niet zo denderend voel, dan ga ik naar de site van de Shetland Museum and Archives en dan zoek ik een leuk plaatje uit en ga helemaal los. Ik pluis het helemaal uit, zoek een leuk draadje (tegenwoordig steeds vaker zijde) en brei het. Dan kan ik metéén checken of het klopt en rijen corrigeren..

And then there are the very special swatches.
When I'm feeling down, I go the the website of the Shetland Museum and Archives, pick out a nice photo and let myself go. I work out the pattern, writing it down, search for a nice yarn (often silk) and knit it. That way I can check if I got it right and correct rows if necessary.

Daarna ben ik weer helemaal happy! Ik zou zeggen: swatchen is zo slecht nog niet...

That makes me véry happy! It's my way of telling you that swatching can be a good thing.
