Welkom in 2017!!!

 Hallo en welkom in het nieuwe jaar!!!
Zo. En nu? Tja. Breien. En een beetje spinnen. Ontwerpen gaat best leuk, er zijn veel nieuwe plannen, zowel voor beginners als voor ervaren kantbreisters. Ik hoop dat ik jullie op jullie wenken kan bedienen.

Hello and welcome in 2017!
Okay. So, now what... Well. Knitting. And a bit of spinning. Designing will continue, I have some great ideas for beginners in lace, as well as for the advanced knitters.

Eind 2016 is dit ontwerp uitgekomen: Little Secret. Testbreiers hebben weer hard gewerkt om het allemaal goed op papier te krijgen. Dank aan Ammerins, Susan, Suzanne, Eve en Ditte. 
Het jongere zusje is Aith, al reeds in 2011 uitgebracht.
Zusjes, omdat ze in een verrukkelijke kleur gebreid zijn, Tequila Sunrise. Een zacht geel met oranje blosjes.

 At the end of 2016, I released the pattern for the Little Secret shawl. Test knitters have worked very hard to make every thing correct.  Thank you Ammerins, Suzanne, Susan, Eve and Ditte. 

The younger sister is "Aith", already released back in 2011.
They are sisters, because they are made in a yummie colourway: Tequila Sunrise. A pale soft yellow with orange blushes.
 

 This is a skein of The Gossamer Web "Tequila Sunrise" optional in all yarn variations. 

Ik kan je nog wel iets anders laten zien. Ik heb al een voorbeeldje gebreid met heerlijk yak garen.
De vorm wordt een verrassing, iets wat ik nog niet eerder gebreid heb!

I am able to show you something else. I already was able to make a swatch with this yummie yak yarn. 
The shape will be a suprise, something I haven't even made before! 

Niet vergeten om in de zij kolom te kijken waar ik het komende half jaar workshops zal geven!
Het zijn best veel lokaties! En in april misschien bij mij thuis! Je bent van harte welkom.

Fortresse

In de vorige post kon je lezen dat er nogal wat vooraf kan gaan, voordat er eindelijk een definitief ontwerp tot stand komt.

En soms... is dat niet zo. Dan is de opdracht zo duidelijk, plus een beetje geluk met de geëiste onderdelen, en dan is een ontwerp 'zo maar'  klaar.

In the previous post, you could read about the development some designs. It can take a long time to work it all out and come to a final result.

And sometimes.... you don't have to work so hard. The brief is so clear and with a bit of added luck with the demands, a design can just roll of the needles.

En wanneer je dan ook nog met 100% zijde mag werken is dat geen straf. De vraag was of ik een shawl wilde ontwerpen met een thema; Zwartsluis. De opdrachtgeefster was van plan om een winkel te openen en een thema shawl zou dan best mooi zijn voor in de etalage. 

Er is veel water in de omgeving en het schild/vlag van Zwartsluis bood ook opties. (zie eerste foto!) 

And when you háve to work with 100% silk, you don't need to ask twice. The main point of the brief was that the shawl had to have a theme: Zwartsluis. The commissioner-lady was about to open up a yarn store there and a themed shawl would look very good in the shop window.

And there's lots of water nearby and the town's shield  gave me some options too. (First picture).

Dus ik had bedacht dat ik zou beginnen met het Schild: blokken in recht en averecht. Dan zou dat zachtjes overlopen in golven van 'water' en naar de 'oever' en riet/gras. Omdat de shawl rechthoekig zou worden, leek het me leuk om voor de verandering maar aan één lange zijde een kantrandje in te breien.

I thought it would be nice to start with the blocks of the shield in knit and purl blocks. That would transform into waves (water) and a bank (water edge) and grass/reed. Because I chose for a rectangled shape, I thought it would be nice to only add a lace edging on one long side of the shawl. 

Hier en daar een klein beetje aanpassen tijdens het breien, omdat hier ook het ontwerp weer iets groter was dan het garen toe liet (800m/100gr). Uiteindelijk een ontwerp wat prima is voor een beginnende kantbrei(st)er. Maar ook leuk voor alle andere kantbreisters. (foto onder: bijna klaar!). 

It needed a bit of tweeking during knitting because the yarn wouldn't allow all the ideas (875y/100gr)
In the end, it's a great project for beginners in lace knitting. But, even interesting for all other laceknitters, ofcourse. (picture above: not quite ready!).

 Door de zijde krijgt deze zacht lila / mauve tint een beetje extra glans en het draagt ook nog eens erg lekker. De shawl is van gemiddelde lengte (150cm) en je zou hem langer kunnen maken (extra streng garen!) door bijvoorbeeld bepaalde patroonblokken een keer extra te herhalen.

The silk gives this mauve a bit extra shine. The shawl is 59" long and if you want to, (extra yarn!) you can add more repeats of certain parts to add length.

Brae

Vorig jaar stond ik op de MidWinterWol in Winschoten. Een heel ander publiek dan op de meeste beurzen waar ik kom; spinners, wevers, kantklossers, vilters enz. Erg interessant want zo leer je weer wat bij, maar voor het publiek was ik de enige met gebreide items.
Ik stond er ook om de breiriem te demonstreren, maar door de kou in de hal ging dat niet zo soepel.
Anyway... er was erg veel belangstelling voor mijn mini kraampje met gebreide shawls. 

Last year I was part of a craft fair in Winschoten; MidWinterWol. A whole different set of people due to the set up of the Fair. Weavers, spinners, bobbin lace and felters. Very interesting and lots to learn. For the public I was the 'only' one with knit items and they found it very pretty and my little booth was quite busy.
I was also there to demonstrate the knittingbelt but due to the low temperature in the hall that proved to be a bit difficult. 

Ik heb daar kaartjes uitgedeeld met alle informatie en er was een mevrouw die wel belangstelling had. Ik mocht voor haar een shawl breien. Ik heb het patroon een beetje aangepast zodat het een mooi geheel werd met een mooie rand. 

I've given out some business cards and one lady was so interested that she made an appointment to meet me. She gave me a pattern to work with and I designed it so it would make a lovely shawl and pretty edging. 

Het bijzondere was eigenlijk dat ze wel een ERG lange shawl wilde: twee meter vijftig lang. Wow. Dat heb ik nog nooit gedaan. Alhoewel de Love Darg ook in de richting komt met 2,2m, is het voor je gevoel eindeloos lang. 

The special thing with this commission was that it had to be very, very long: 100". I've never knit such a long shawl, although the Love Darg came close with 90" but it still sounds like a lot. 

Sinds dat ik het graften aardig onder de knie heb, kies ik er sneller voor. Bovendien, wanneer je deze shawl draagt, loopt het patroon op dezelfde manier naar boven.

Since I have become pretty handy in grafting 2 parts, I tend to choose it as a design option more often. Besides, while wearing the shawl, the pattern runs up the same way. 

Omdat ik beide delen tegelijkertijd heb gebreid; zo is de 'tension' gelijk en zijn beide delen even groot was ik best snel klaar! Door het zachte garen, wat de mevrouw op de MidWinterWol had gekocht, is het werkelijk een weelde van zwarte zachtheid om je heen...

Because I have worked both halves at the same time, so knitting tension is exactly the same and both parts have the same dimensions, I was done pretty quick. The soft yarn the lady had purchased at the MidWinterWol fair, makes it a luscious shawl to wear.

Op de achterkant wordt ook in patroon gebreid, maar niet met kantpatronen.

Spring! ... Lente.

Na een lange sombere en uitgerekte winter was het best tijd voor wat vrolijks! Ik mocht weer een nieuw garen uit proberen en het patroon pastte er zó mooi bij; lente in aantocht.

After a long, dull and extended winter it was about time for something cheerful! I was to try out some new yarn and the pattern that came with it was very nice: spring was in the air.

(weird; blogger keeps turning my pictures left and right, sorry). 

Het patroon is Monkeys. Eenvoudig en misschien zelfs wat saai, maar met dit garen....

The pattern is Monkeys. Simple and maybe even a bit boring, but with this yarn....

Hier zie je een beetje mijn onervarenheid met dit soort garen(s). Toen ik met een nieuwe bol begon, leek het garen door te lopen. Ik had echter niet de gaten dat ik 'halverwege' de kleurbaan was begonnen. Daardoor zitten net naast het midden 2 roze kleurbanen vlak bij elkaar. 

 In the overall picture my inexperience with these type of yarns is showing a bit. When I started with a new ball of yarn, the colours seemed to be flowing nicely. I hadn't checked how long the colour would run for... Therefor just next to the centre are 2 sets of pink very close to eachother.

Yarn: Katia Jaipur 280m/50gr.
