(s)Watch!

 1. Cuckron shawl (A legacy of Lace) in Jamieson & Smith Supreme fine fleece in "Silver". Combed and handspun, 1ply on 2mm needles.

Sometimes you have to do something else than the large shawl you're working on right now. Something quick which you can work on directly and doesn't require a 100 repeats.
Make a swatch! A perfect opportunity to see if your yarn matches the needlesize or that you'd better go up or down a size.

 2. Esha swatch in Cashmere/merino (70/30) Bart & Francis on 1,5mm needles

3. 1ply jamieson & Smith in optical white; The Second One

It is also an excellent moment to combine a set of patterns and to check if it all will work out like you had planned. Often it will take only a few meters of that new yarn you just bought and you will not run short. Or... you can use that little left over from that yarn that you like so much but is already used for something else.

4. 1ply Jamieson & Smith in Fawn;  swatch for The Second One.  2mm needles.

Or, perhaps you have bought such soft and gorgeous yarn that you want a little bit to cuddle in your pocket.
 5. 2ply 2/28NM 100% Cashmere in Caramel (ColourMart) on 2,5mm needles

And once in a while you just want to try some yarn on extra fine needles to see how it will look when you're nót knitting lace with it.

 6. Baby sock in estonian wool on 1.5mm needles.

Making an attempt to turn a corner to see how many times you need to 'Wrap & Turn' to get it right.
7. ColourMart 2/48 NM Extra Fine Merino in Bali Peach and Mocha

8.  "Northdale" by G. Johnston  Jamieson's of Shetland (spindrift) (top) and Jamieson & Smith 2ply lace

And, last but not least; taking yarn from your stash to immediately try out a brand new design. Without emptying your bank account. And slide in your own colour combinations.

Or read this post: Swatch

Conclusion: swatching is NOT a waste of time, but a useful and pretty thing to do.

I'm back!

Zucht.
Het is alweer voorbij.
Shetland WoolWeek.

Tweed, 12"x12" (3x3 pakketjes gekocht). (Jamieson's of Shetland).

Sigh...
It's already over.
Shetland Wool Week.
Mónths of looking forward to it and then the week just comes and goed pretty quick. The next couple of days / weeks you'll be hearing all about the adventures we've had. Anke, Marieke, Corry, Titia, Carla en Elsbeth and me. First some pretty pictures.

This Wool Week is an excellent moment for a book launch! Timing is everything, lots of people to see your work right away (Trunk show at J&S store). Gudrun has made a second book with wonderful pictures at Belmont House (Unst) and one of the sweaters asked for my attention. At the store, she helped my replace the Brooklyn Tweed Loft with J&S 2ply jumper weight. The thing is, she even designed it in MY size!!

Of course I couldn't leave without any laceweight yarn! Jamieson & Smith has quite the collection of 1 ply lace and even came up with a new colour: Optical white! I have to knit this yarn by daytime, as it was a little bit hard to see on my grey needles from Lana Grossa..

Happy!!!

For various projects I added some more Jamieson Ultra. The two balls of middle blue came in the goodie bag we recieved after the tour of the Spinning Mill (pattern included!).

On my previous visit to Shetland, I never came around to visit Shetland Organics. My friend Ammerins did, so I didn't want to miss out on it this time. A véry pretty property with woodcarved panels, nice glass doors and lots of woolly goodies inside. And because I had just had a spinning class, I decided to purchase some yarn in grey and spinning wool in white and 'black'. Let's see if I can do it..

V.L.N.R.
A legacy of Lace.
The Shetland Trader: Book Two: Een prachtig boekje met sfeervolle foto's gemaakt in Belmont House op Unst.

(please use links above)

A Legacy of Lace: out 2 years ago during WoolWeek. Didn't buy it then, but I've come to know some of the designers and well, who can resist it anyway.
Shade Card: Noticed it 2 years ago, but with a little more knowledge now, bought it.
"this prevents the disappointment of choosing colours from a screen, and getting them home and they look 'different'...."  yeah right...
Unst Heritage Lace: Alle new patterns by Hazal Laurelson of Unst. *
My friends got me this for my birthday: Thank you all!
The Shetland Trader: Book Two: a very stylish book with pretty patterns of sweaters, cardi's and tops. (and a hat) Foto's gemaakt op Belmont House op Unst.

*Please notice this: the patterns that are on the cover ARE NOT in the booklet. This only contains separate patterns to which you can build your own shawl. Full pattern available separately. I think you need to mail and ask for it.

To conclude: a couple of Spindrift balls. I'm sure I figure out something to make with these.

More to come....

Ben effe weg... I'll be gone for a little while...

I'll be gone for a little while. I find it all to be terribly exciting: flying, boattrip and meeting / joining all sorts of great people and... ofcourse... the island itself.
I just was homesick after my first stay. I don't expect it to be any different this time...

I'll be back on the 13th and probably only able to talk about one thing: Shetland Wool Week!

See you all later!!

Geluk.... Luck

Sometimes... sometimes you need a little bit of luck. The luck that someone has faith in you for doing something and making it work.
And I have it, sometimes. Luck. That's nice.

I am known for my (many) lace knitted projects. Not for my skills as a Fair Isle knitter. I did manage to make several hats and a little blanket with lots of sheep, using my knitting belt. So, choosing me for doing this project was not logical at all. I was just só lucky to live only 20 minutes (by bus) away from the Fries Museum. And in their storage was a very old hat.

Vele 'wegen' kwamen in eens samen.

Lots of things came together at once: I've been to Shetland, I've seen Pearl Johnston working with her knittingbelt, I've got a knittingbelt, I can knit a bit of Fair Isle ánd I can write patterns... that's lucky, right?

Mijn poging (allereerste foto) is bijna even groot.
The original hat is very fine knit, I think on size 1,5mm. My first attempt came very close (see first picture).
The hat is made in 1850 and made out of handspun and hand dyed yarn. It's full of holes but no dropped stitches due to that. It felt só special to be able to look at it so closely and researching it to be able to recreate it. I felt so lucky.

(Jamieson's of Shetland yarn and Jamieson & Smith Heritage yarn).
These are my 2 projects which I started after finishing writing the pattern. On the left the hat on 2,5mm that (almost) everyone will  be able to knit. (Holst yarn)  And on the right my attempt to work it 1:1 on 1,5mm needles. (Jamieson's of Shetland and Jamieson & Smith Heritage)
I had to work my ass of to get it ready on time. I had to knit until 01:30 at night to finish knitting and was able to make the sort of pompom the next morning. Now it's exactly as long as the original with one less repeat compared to the original. Once made to wear it will look exactly the same.

Sorry.
These pictures (above and one above) are from Gieneke, the commissioner of knitting the hat. Next year there will be a Knitting Exhibition in the Fries Museum (Leeuwarden). As far as I am informed, the pattern for this hat will be made available by the Museum (not online probably). So you can knit it yourself. That's all I know, sorry.

Sorry.

On Sunday March 16, while Gieneke (in the red/pink) was telling us all about the items in storage of the Fries Museum, I was able to present her the hat. Loret (wearing a green shawl I had knitted for her a while back) had arranged it to be a surprise. I was a bit overdressed with 2 shawls, a hat and my knitting belt. Sorry.

I will have until next year to finish the 1:1 hat.

NOTE:
The pattern will NOT be available before the opening of the exhibition. I don't know if it will be available in english by then. I will make one, but I don't know if they want it.

Wovember

Just a few weeks after I came back from Shetland, the month of Wovember started.

Accompanied by a very educational website and posts it's a great way to learn a lot more about WOOL, sheep, and using it to make wonderful things.

I dared to enter a blogpost I wrote and it got published on their site. I had to edit it so that it had less words, but the heart is still in it.

You can read it (again) here; LINK

In the meantime I've knitted the Sixareen Kep, designed by Kate Davies. My daughter is wearing it all the time!

Here, the kep was still in progress.
The green part is the inside that needs to be flapped back for a soft inside. All yarn is Heritage Yarn by Jamieson & Smith (the green is PoshYarn).
My next project was a hairband by Kate, and it was intended for myself. But I ended up giving it to my mother too, I'm not the headband type.. It's still pretty..
This has a combo of Jamieson's of Shetland (red/sunrise and brown/grouse), heritage yarn (cream) and white natural and grey by J&S
The inside is also green PoshYarn

I'm VERY glad I was on Shetland, especially during WoolWeek! I've learned so much, seen pretty things, an amazing island, great people and to be honest I think about it every day.

There is still a lot to learn and do. So.. I will talk about it more, probably not that much about Fair Isle, but surely about lace. I cannot stop, sorry....

The calender is already hanging on the wall! Very happy with that too...

Sandness Heather...

When you're on Shetland, you're surrounded by Heather. All over the place.
The culture shock for me, the no-trees thing, wasn't as 'bad' as the heather thing. The compact heather makes peat over the years/centuries and that is cut in the fields. And once dried it's to light a fire.
When you're European, you know that when you go to the mountains (there aren't any in The Netherlands) you see a nice valley with a village or a town or a city in it. Think of Rome...
Not in the Shetland Isles. Heather. And Water.

And then.... the Silence. I live in a area which is called: De Wâlden, or the woody area. So I'm used to hearing the wind in the trees. Here are NO trees. (at least not much, I spotted some pines in Voe and Brae).
So... no sound. I know, the wind is there, but the sound is different. And what I also missed was the smell of the sea. Sorry, the ocean. It probably was so windy, it blew away. The only day I smelled the ocean was on Friday, when it was very windy and the waves had a great time playing around the rocks.

Back to the heather.
Wednesday it was time to go to Sandness. Next to Eshaness and Hermaness my favorite place in the WORLD. Again, utter the silence, the sheep, the wideness of the landscape and the way that single road meandered through the land. I saw it with my own eyes, but couldn't believe it.

Weisdale

Because I got sick on the bus to Voe, Tuesday, we decided to take the car. A lucky thing, as I will tell you later. The road to Sandness is one of great boredom, like the picture on top. Wide valleys, hardly any sheep because it's too wet. Once you pass Hellister, the road to Weisdale is the most amazing drive to do on the entire island. The way goes up, and just at the right spot is a passing place, eventhough it is still a two way road, to take in the view.
We were fortunate enough that the sun was shining through the clouds and all the way to the south it was isles and the silver water.

Then, when you pass Bixter and continue on to the Bridge of Walls, nót going to Walls, you steer away from life as you know it, and continue on a single road. Thére the happiness begins.
Heather, small streams, passing sheep. Silence. Silence, more silence. Infact, we were driving and you could SEE the silence. There just wasn't anything to make noise.

I was VERY impressed. We passed only a few four wheel drives (you actually need those over there, it's not a fashion statement) and started to wonder what would we find at the end of this road!

And we found a very small village, and a factory. And even thát didn't make much noise at all. Or they were having a break.
The Jamieson's of Shetland factory, where they select, dye, card, spin, weave and handle wool. Lots of it. And amazing quality. We got to see the machines make fabric (like tweed) and knit sweaters. We got to see all the steps of selecting, processing and producing products from the wool. Garry, the kind young man who showed us everthing, gave us the knowledge the plant had even woven fabric for Ralph Lauren. So.. at the end of the guide tour, Cathy was so kind to ask him, if it was possible for him to show us the fabric... The first tour group was already seated in the bus! So we went upstairs for a 'quick' look.

My mother had asked me, if possible, I could bring her some tweed so she could quilt with it. I asked Garry if it was an option for me to get me some tweed. He told me I could point at a roll of fabric, they would cut the amount and sent it to me.
But that wasn't what I had in mind. My mother cannot quilt with anything 'single'. He pointed at the waste bin... I asked, he nodded and then 6 women went wild in the bin. Picking out fabric, nicely putting back the (large) pieces that were tagged.

The call came that the bus would be leaving, and because Amy and me were by car, we kept on 'grabbing' at pieces and parts of the tweed in the bin.
Thanking Garry a lot, we went back downstairs and smiling at our new required treasure.
We were already sitting in the car, chatting about our luck, when the lady from the shop came running.
Oh oh..

We opened the door, thinking about what to say. She said we forgot something. Our goodie bag... Oh my god, more??
We thanked her vèry much, covering our treasure and googling the new found goodies.
A pattern, (lace) yarn, a colour card and a fabric bag with Shetland language for english knitting terms.

What a day.
We had to speed things up, because I had to be back at Jamieson & Smith by 18:00 for the Let's talk Lace evening. (more about that later..)

I did manage to buy some yarn at Jamieson's of Shetland. They had to pull it of a shelf out back, it was not on display in the shop. I had glanced at the colour card and noticed a lovely orange.
The same shade of the shawl the lady on the bus was wearing, the day before. She drove us back from Voe and I had found here wrap amazing. It was fine knit, and because I couldn't find the same shade in the right weight, I had bought the Heather Gingersnap instead.
The road from Voe to Lerwick was long enough for me, to try and study the pattern of her wrap. It wasn't so difficult. I could remember that. When I casted on, and had knitted the first three repeats, I thought it might look a bit to much of a leopard print. So I knitted a plain center part. Then, my mother saw it, loved it, and didn't want it that wide... Mirrored the little squares and bound off.
She can wear it doubled around her neck, and when it's colder, once around her neck and the other half around her head.
It's 29" wide (double) or 250 stitches (on size 4,5mm needles).
The yarn? Jamieson's of Shetland Heather in Gingersnap and Mirrydancers.

Monique on Shetland...

Luminous Lights at the Böd of Gremista.
One of the many bays on Shetland
 At Burra
At the museum admiring the fine knitted lace knit by the lady I'm talking too at the Museum in Lerwick.
Talking about my lace, I'm showing the Across the Beach at Jamieson & Smith Trunk Show by Kate Davies.
At Charlotte's in the heart of Lerwick, quite sunny.
At the top of a moor at Hermaness, Unst. Furthest north I've ever been.
This cute little car made it possible to go anywhere (Bolt's Carhire).

Showing my Across the beach shawl to Kate Davies and Cathy.
Talking with Garry at Jamieson's of Shetland, Sandness. Learned a lot!
With Amy holding up my lace shawl The One, so they could see how it looked overall. (Voe)

This is my most loved picture. For the very first time, I'm smiling on a boat! The pills for travel-sickness did their work perfectly. Finally I was able to travel like a normal person. This was the boat from the Mainland to Yell.

Thanks to Amy for allowing me to use her pictures.

WARNING: these will probably be the last pictures you see of me, I'm usually vèry camera shy..
