2008

2008 was a variegated year. Lots of things happening; good, bad, ugly and pretty. Sad things and many happy things.

1. My husband got a new job as a truckdriver; going abroad a lot. My kids are coping with that very well, I love them to death.


2. I quit my business of garden design; no clients mean no income, no income means no advertising, no advertising brings zero clients. Hence the shut down. I was quite sad, but learned a lot.


3. I got a tenyear (vastcontract) on my new job: mailman (TNT) for 6 hours a week. I'm very happy, that leaves kids-time, hub-time, knit-time and yes, even cleaning-time.
   
4. Our pedigree-cat got lost. Probably an angry neighbour let him disappear so his cat could retire peacefully. We are on no-speaking terms now.


5. We found a little cute kitten that brightend our entire fall and winter. Unfortunately she got hit by a car and died. That hit us hard.


6. On average I've knitted 1 shawl a month this year.


7. Ravelry cost me a LOT of sleep, in a good way. Man, I'm addicted. So many good friends, lovely patterns, to-die-for-yarns, and so many forums: thanks Casey and Frecklegirl.


8. I started a new business, very small: Kantwerk.nl ; knitting on commission. First project is on the needles. (thanks). No website yet, that's under construction.


9. On the Craftsfair / Stitch'n'Bitch in Rotterdam my hubby found a goodiebag with lóts of goodies; laceweight, stitchmarkers, aranweight and lots more. Thanks Yvon and Ballee.
   
10. Last week I won a knitted rose. I love flowers and she gave some beautiful red roses away; I was so lucky to win one. Thank you Mariella.


11. Today... I won a price. I don't know what yet, it's a surprise. Thank you, Karen.


12. I was overwhelmed by Liina, how she helped me to find what I was looking for to keep me busy all of 2009 and years to come. Thanks Liina.

I'm so happy that the two things I like (knitting and internet) can bring SO many people together. I feel right at home.

Shetland Tea Shawl

Eindelijk ben ik klaar met mijn Shetland Tea Shawl. Hij is toch ietsje kleiner geworden dan ik had gedacht. Ik heb de rand iets smaller gemaakt omdat ik had ingeschat dat ik anders garen te kort zou komen. Maar dat viel uiteindelijk erg mee. Kerstmorgen heb ik hem geblocked, in het morgen zonnetje. Finally I finished my Shetland Tea Shawl. It's become a bit smaller than I anticipated, I shrunk the edging a bit, because I thought I'd run out of yarn before finishing. That didn't happen. Christmas morning I blocked it, the sun was shining over it...

And now for the good news....

I want to thank everyone for all of you kind words, after the death of our little kitten, and my bad back. It really helped to ease the pain.

And now for the good news.
For quite a while I've been searching the net for a knitting book. Of course, it's one that's out of print, hard to get, and nowhere to be found...
There are only a few people (in Holland) that I know off, who dó have it. She's one of them. She's also one (not from Holland)
There was also a site that displayed some knitted patterns from the book in question. I emailed with the moderator, she told me she had bought her copy in Germany. Tried to get one, but already sold out.
The moderator mailed me later that she'd heard of a lady that had 3 copies available. She mailed her, but never heared from that woman again...

The thing got a bit obsessive... The more I got zero on request, the more I wanted it!


So, I sat down, started to think about it.
If you sit close to the fire, you'll be quite warm...
After some good searching I found someone in ...Estonia. Her name (on Ravelry) is Rees.
She'd knitted a beautifull Estonian Lace shawl.
I dared to try.
I asked if there would be ANY way that she could search for me in the land of lace knitting.
She would, she did and SHE FOUND!
And, most friendly of all: she bought it for me, send it to me and today I am the proud owner of....
Pitsilised Koekirjad.

It's not the original cover of the well known book, but the patterns (all 211 of them) are all there. Including the charts, the abbreviations and the year of print: 1978!! The most amazing patterns in lace, with nupps, without nupps... I cannot read the language, but a picture says more than a thousand words (or charts...). hahhahaa.

Thank you very much, Rees, for your kind actions to help me in my search. (ravelry-link).
I'm very happy, and will be trying out several of the patterns, hoping to make very original knitted things.

Though time

I'm having a bit of a though time.
Monday:
A flat on my bike, walk back to work, switch, stepped in dogpoop and got it all over my clothes because I didn't notice right away, bumped my leg on a metal cart at work. Luckily my eldest son helped with dinner so I could fix my bike.
Tuesday:
Fell with my bike. My knee hurts. And it was pretty cold. Had to help my eldest son delivering his newspapers because he was a little sick.
Wednesday:
Delivered some mail to the wrong houses (4).... And when I picked up my little girl from my parents house got yet anóther flat on my bike. The frontwheel this time. Glass.
Thursday:
Threw out my back. I couldn't stand up straight anymore. Cycling went well, but walking was agony. So called my boss, my dad and my husband. Crying that I couldn't do it anymore.
My dad brought me home, my boss made sure that the mail would be delivered and my husband is now worrying over me in the South of France (he's a international truckdriver...)
Edit for Friday:
I collapsed this morning. Wanting to go to the bathroom, took a left turn and fell to the ground. I screamed alot, so my boy got a bit scared. I let him call my dad, he talked me back up again (took more then a half hour...). It hurts so much..
I'm on prescription painkillers, and because I'm also having my period (why not...) it will cut back on the bleeding (sorry for that).
I feel soooooooooooooooooo old....

To sum it up: I have End of the Year blues. I need new batteries. I need to let go...

Verdriet... Sorrow

Onze kleine kat is vanmorgen aangereden door een auto en dood gegaan. Ze was nog zo klein; nog maar 8 maanden. De foto hierboven is van toen we haar net kregen, zo'n 4 maanden geleden.
De kinderen zijn ontroostbaar, het was namelijk een echte bengel. Springen, spelen, aanvallen, lekker bij je liggen, zachtjes bijten en spinnen. Mijn man zal haar ook missen, ze liepen altijd samen op, en net als de vorige kat, wachtte ze hem altijd op als hij met de auto kwam aanrijden. Ik heb zelf ook een flinke traan gelaten. We zullen haar verschrikkelijk missen.

Our cute little cat has been in a hit and run accident this morning and died. She was still a kitten of 8 months, we got her at 4. The children have a hard time with it, as she was playfull, naughty, chewing on things, purring, and laying beside us. She was an adorable little devil. She always was there to greet my husband as he got out of the car after work, just like our previous cats. I shed a big tear too...
We'll miss her aweful.

Growing Pains...

Bridget wordt bijna 6. Het duurt nog wel even maar de eerste tekenen van het groter worden zijn vanaf vanmorgen duidelijk zichtbaar. Ze heeft haar derde tand gewisseld. Op zich niet speciaal, maar wel omdat het de middelste boven is! De onderste 2 waren van het voorjaar al gewisseld, en hebben prachtige karteltjes en zijn vlijmscherp.
Bridget is almost turning 6, and the first signs of growing up is now clearly visable. Her third tooth has dropped and the new one is already in sight. The others were also a big thing, but this one's special because it's so easy to see.
Ik zou ook nog wat vertellen over de andere dingen die ik had gekocht op de handwerkbeurs. Zoals je boven op de foto ziet heb ik nog 2 bollen Zitron Nimbus Blauw gekocht. Het past precies bij de ongekleurde wol uit mijn Goodiebag van Storm en Ballee.
I promised to tell you about the yarn I bought on the craftsfair. It's Zitron Nimbus Blue. It fits beautifully with the undyed yarn from my goodiebag.

Prachtig he, de Quiviut op de streng. Hierboven was hij nog niet gewassen. Het bolletje blijkt ongeveer 500 m te zijn, maar na het wassen was het nog zo ontzettend zacht, de draad is al 4x gebroken tijdens het opbollen.
The Quiviut is beautiful on a skein, he? It is about 546 yards and so soft, it broke 4 times during the winding into a ball.

In een hele mooie winkel met wol en quiltspullen "De Schapekop" heb ik me zitten verbazen over alles wat ze hebben. Rowan, Loopi, Noro, Drops... en wol van eigen schaap. Ze hebben geen website, maar het is de moeite van een ritje er heen zeker waard. Ik kocht er 3 bollen Rowan Felted Tweed.
In a well stocked yarnshop "De Schapekop" I was in 'awe' to see what lines they carry; Drops, Rowan, Loopi, Noro in all colours and sizes.

Ik heb bij deze shop op de beurs nog 4 zakjes Koolaid gekocht. dat gaan we eens even proberen. Ik heb begrepen dat het alleen 'werkt' op dierlijke haren, niet op plantaardig. Ik ga een stukje op zijde, cashmere/merino proberen.
Ik heb nog diverse projecten op de naald, maar nog lang niet af. De Japanse Feathers and Fans schiet al aardig op, ik heb nu ongeveer 320 st op de naald en ik ben nog lang niet klaar. Hij wordt voor mijn schoonzus.
At the craftsfair I also bought 4 sachets of Koolaid from them, to try on some silk, cashmerino...
I've also got several projects on the needles, but nearly not finished. The Japanese Feathers and Fans shawl is coming along nicely, but the stitchcount is stacking up. This will be for my SIL.

Stash Enhancement.

Handwerkbeurs in Rotterdam.
Helaas was de beurs niet zo leuk als vorige jaren bij de Stitch'n'Bitch; de kracht van het Van Nelle Pand is licht en ruimte, en dat was het op de breiafdeling ver te zoeken. Er waren erg veel quiltstands, en stands met goed breimateriaal. Wolhemel, Storm op Zolder, Ballee, Astrid's Dutch Obsessions, Breiwinkel, Kauni, Trikoo, Klazien, Wolhalla....
Allemaal zo mooooi.

Het gerucht ging dat Storm en Ballee een goodiebag had verstopt; met allerlei goodies. Ik had mijn man mee en die had na goed zoeken de tas gevonden! Ik ben ZO blij met alles wat er in zit. Kantgewicht garen, arangewicht natuurlijke wol, ZES breipennetjes van Knitpicks, stitchmarkers van Ballee en etiketten, prachtige postkaarten. Kijk maar....

In de zevende (wol)hemel! ZO blij. Mijn moeder zag de gele streng, ze wilde hem gewooon hebben om neer te leggen en naar te kijken...

This weekend was the Craftsfair in Rotterdam. I took my husband along and he spotted the goodiebag from Storm in the Attic and Ballee!!! I was só happy. Look what's in side: cobweb wool, aran wool, stitchmarkers, little snowmen, knitpicks needles (6), and picturepostcards.

This is the Aran weight. Biological, undyed and untwined.
And below the cobwebweight. Ochtendzon...

Van mijn man kreeg ik nog een prachtige zachte bol van Quiviut/Alpaca/Angora. Quiviut is het dons van een muskus-os en het meest exclusieve garen in de wereld; aldus Storm.
Ik heb nog meer gekocht, later daarover meer...
My husband bought me some Quiviut/Alpaca/Angora from Storm in the Attic. Amazingly soft, freshly spun by her. It wasn't even washed and blocked. I have to do that myself. That's a first.
I've bought some more yarn, more about that later....

Ik vond het reuze gezellig om iedereen weer te zien, spreken en te bekijken wat ze aan hadden (Mariella) en aan het maken waren (Ammerins) of gemaakt hadden (ALLE Suzy Q's ). Misschien zien we elkaar de volgende keer niet in Rotterdam, maar vast wel in Zwolle. Tot dan!

Oogst.... Harvest....

Het was een prachtige zondag vandaag. Heerlijk in de tuin gewerkt, ruimte gemaakt, opgeruimd, rozen verzet en ge-oogst. Appels en druiven. Allebei ook nog eetbaar. Een dikke kilo druiven (Vitis Boskoop) en uiteindelijk 2 kilo appels (Malus Elstar).
It's a beautiful Sunday; time to do some gardening. Made some room, cleaned up and re-planted roses. And harvest some fruit; apples and grapes. Both eatable. More than 2,6 lbs of grapes and more than 5 lbs of apples.. Ik heb ook een beetje veel nieuw garen gekocht.
Blauwe mohair van Online, 2 bollen om een tas van de breien om te vervilten. Voor mijn moeder. En voor mijn schoonzus katoen /zijde om een kantsjaal mee te breien: Japanese Feathers and Fans. Een gratis patroon, niet moeilijk en verschrikkelijk mooi.

Yeah, I did it.. 25000 hits. And all lovely remarks and comments by all my friends. Thank you for that. The packages must wait for a week before they'll go by mail: you've got one more week to comment or mail..
Een paar weken geleden heb ik in een impuls (wat een verrassing) een paar bollen enorm dik roze garen gekocht. Ik wilde wat breien voor Bridget (6 jaar). Maar wat?
Natuurlijk alle geëikte sites bekeken maar niet iets gevonden waarbij ik dacht: ik begin meteen!
Dus gewoon begonnen met kant (ook geen verrassing) maar dat werkte niet. Toen nóg een keer naar de winkel geweest en een bol bruin gehaald. Een beetje gejat van Eunny Jang en doorgebreid.
A few weeks ago, on an impuls, (Surprise, surprise), I bought some bulky yarn in pink. To knit something for Bridget (6). But what? Started out with lace, but that didn't came out right.
Bought another ball of brown and picked a little pattern from Eunny Jang and was on my way.
En dit is het eind resultaat. Ik noem het
Could be a dress. Het patroon komt beschikbaar. Over een tijdje, het is niet zo moeilijk. Ik heb me helemaal uitgeleeft met het 'graften' op de schouders. Het loopt prachtig door.
The pattern will be available soon, it isn't hard. I just grafted my ass off on the shoulders, it was worth it.
I got some great new yarn for my birthday, ofcourse by Colourmart. Pure silk, 2750 yards on a 150 gr cone. The colour is Pale Agua. Next week I'll be getting even more yarn; also pure silk but in 4 ply. Thát I will use to knit for my SIL. Ik heb ook weer nieuw garen gekregen (als verjaardagskadoo). Pure zijde, 2500 m op een cone van 150 gr. Pale Agua. Volgende week krijg ik nog meer pure zijde, dan in 4 draads. Dat is dan voor een sjaal voor mijn schoonzus. Dat wordt weer zoeken...

So cute!

Bij de provinciale afdeling Friesland van de Stitch 'n' Bitch hadden we onlangs een gezellig breiavondje. Niet iedereen was er, maar er is toch een beslissing genomen om iets te maken als groep waaraan we op de Handwerkbeurs herkenbaar zijn. Zij had een voorbeeld van een sjaaltje en zij had een voorbeeld van een gevilt tasje. Eigenlijk had ik ik voor het sjaaltje gekozen, maar eenmaal thuis leek het tasje me ook een geweldig idee. Dus wol besteld, Eskimo van Drops, en toen het er was metéén begonnen. In een avond heb ik 'm gebreid, op de hengels na. Ze, Suzy, is niet helemaal volgens patroon, ik had die dikke naalden niet in het rond. Maar omdat te compenseren heb ik er een hele mooie bloem op gehaakt. En nu is hij klaar. Ik ben er ZO blij mee, het is idd verslavend, en hij is zo schattig (volgens 3 mensen die mij hier op aanspraken), ik ga er vast nog een maken. Ik denk dat ik dan de Eskimo ga combineren met Malabrigo... Ik zie bloemetjes, takjes....
At the local department of the Stitch 'n' Bitch community, during a good cup of tea or cappuchino, we've decided to make something that will be recognized by others, that we are a group. The options were a little scarf or a little cute bag. (links above). As I had voted for the scarf, once I was home again, decided to knit the bag. Ordered me some Eskimo (Drops) and started right away when it arrived. She, Suzy, (English link) is not exactly knit to the pattern, but I made a beautiful crochet flower for her...
She's so cute, as I've heard as comment by people I know, that I probably will make one again. Then I will not only use the Eskimo, but also Malabrigo strands. I see flowers, branches.....
