The Shetland Addiction II

Zoals je weet, brei ik heel graag shetland kant. Heel veel patronen zitten gewoon in mijn hoofd en dat vergemakkelijkt het breien. Daardoor wordt het leuker en gaat het nóg sneller. 

Mijn nieuwsgierigheid zorgt er echter voor dat ik nog meer wil weten en leren. 

Dus speur ik de site van het Shetland Museum af naar 'nieuwe' steken of combinaties. Gelukkig ben ik nog láng niet uitgeleerd.

As you know, I really love to knit shetland lace. A lot of patterns are stuck in my head and that makes knitting them a lot easier. And thát makes it more fun and even more quick to knit. 

My curiosity makes me want to learn and do even more. So I cruize on the site of the Shetland Museum to find 'new' combination of stitches and patterns. 

I'm in luck, there is a lot left to learn.

Dit kleine lapje is een patroon wat uit een bruidsshawl komt. Ik kon het in geen van mijn boeken terug vinden, dus dat werd lekker zelf uitzoeken hoe het is opgebouwd. Shetland patronen zijn over het algemeen niet moeilijk, het is alleen even nadenken hóe ze zijn opgebouwd. Vooral een kwestie van veel tellen en uitproberen.

This little swatch is a pattern coming from a bridal veil. (the dark part). I couldn't find this in any of my books, so I had to find out for myself. Shetland patterns often are not very difficult but it's the trick to get them in the right order.
Mainly trial and error..

Dit proefje is een duidelijk voorbeeld van mijn geklooi. Eerst proberen de vorm goed er in te krijgen, dan de middenvakjes toevoegen. En daarna de juiste vorm er in binnen het aantal mogelijke steken. Bovenin is het bijna gelukt. Dit is gewoon een losse rand, die hoort niet bij de Bruidsshawl. (foto origineel Shetland Museum).

 This is a clear example of my attempt to reknit this edging. First to try to get the shape right, then adding the center part and shaping. In the third triangle I almost got it right.

En heel stiekum ben ik begonnen met wéér een shawl van foto af na te breien. Op Nieuwjaarsdag begonnen met tellen en uitzoeken, proefjes gebreid en een chart gemaakt.

Secretly I've started with knitting another shawl from picture. Newyearsday I was busy charting, counting and swatching. 

Eerst de rand gebreid, en nu bezig met de border. Toen ik later nog een keer terug las, blijkt het om een heel klein shawltje te gaan, misschien maar 20 cm breed! Dat wordt die van mij deze keer niet. Ik vind het garen zo mooi, dat ik gewoon nóg een keer een shetland shawl wilde breien met in deze kleur.

First knitted the edging and now working on the border. When I went back to the site and reread the caption, I found out the original is a merely 20 cm wide! My shawl will not be that small this time. I did grab the yarn I like to knit shetland lace with best, i really like the colours.

Purple Breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze...

Ik mocht weer een shawl breien! En de opdrachtgeefster koos voor een van mijn eigen ontwerpen. Het leuke voor mij was dat ik altijd al met dit garen wilde werken en nu mocht het! Het is een lekkere paarse kleur en ik vond het prettig dat de draad niet getwijnd was. 

 I was given another commission to knit a shawl. She had chosen one of my own designs. The fun part for me was that I had been longing to use this yarn for a long time. It is Iris Purple and I really like it that the yarn isn't twined. (a single strand).

 Ik heb de shawl iets smaller gemaakt, ipv de 11 herhalingen in de breedte, heb ik maar 7 gebruikt. Hij is ook niet zo lang.

 I adapted the shawl by using only 7 of the 11 repeats (width) to make it more narrow. I also did less repeats lengthwise.

Wat een jaar! Dat hadden we van te voren niet kunnen bedenken. Ook niet dat het uiteindelijk best goed zou aflopen.

What a year... We couldn't have imagned all that has happened. Or that in the end it all worked out pretty good. 

 De achtbaan begon in maart.
Dank voor Nij Smellinghe en het UMCG voor duidelijkheid en de spoed die nodig was om alles in gang te zetten. Geen tegenwerking gehad.
Thanks to the hospitals to speed up the tests and the speed it asked for to make it all happen correctly. No complaints here.

 Dank voor alle familieleden die ons hielpen, steunden en luisterden. Echt heel erg fijn. Er was genoeg te regelen en Bridget en Sean waren nu ineens heel vaak zonder ouders en grote broer bij opa en oma.
Dank voor alle vrienden die kaartjes stuurden, adviezen gaven waar we op moesten letten en ook luisterden naar alles wat we wilden vertellen.
Thanks to all the family members that got us through, listened and supported us. Realy, thank you. There were enough times for Bridget and Sean to be without parents and their big brother at their grandparents. 

 Dank aan de stichting Doe een Wens. Tijdens de laatste chemokuur heeft het UMCG hem aangemeld. Hij moest dan nog wel 'even' zijn rijbewijs voor de brommer halen.
Dat was dan de derde keer dat hij examen moest doen dit jaar.. en hij haalde het!!
Hij haalde namelijk immers ook nog zijn schoolexamen!
Dank ook aan rijschool Herman Beek.
Thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation. During the last chemo he was 'reported' to them by the hospital . He did need to get his exam for a moped, driving and theory.
That was the third time he needed to do finals this year; and he made it!  When you remember, he also did his exams of school and graduated!

 Toen... was het ineens tijd! De Doe Een Wens mensen hadden gebeld of we woensdag vrij hadden.... En dat was zo! hahaa. We mochten mee in een limosine, Chris mocht in de brommer winkel een helm uitzoeken, handschoenen en een slot!
Daarna gingen we, met de limo, naar de Prins Bernhard Hallen in Zuid Laren. Daar kon Chris proefrijden op de aller-aller-aller-allernieuwste Aprillia brommer. Wat een belevenis.
Daarna eten bij Yankee Doodle met opa en oma's en de Doe Een Wens begeleiders. Daarna gingen we met z'n allen in de Limo en op naar huis. Daar stonden al zijn vrienden!
En toen die opzij gingen.... stond dáár de aller-aller-aller-allernieuwste Aprillia brommer RS4 50cc... Wat een verrassing. En wat was Chris blij.

Then.. suddenly it was time.. Make a Wish foundation had called and asked if we were doing anything wednesday.. No we weren't. A limo picked us up at our house, and they drove us to a scooterstore. Chris could choose any helmet he would like, including gloves and a scooterlock. 

The Limo drove us then to a big hall where he got to practise on the latest design scooter/moped Aprillia has been making. Really, not even in the shops yet! Then we continued with dinner at the local Yankee Doodle with grandparents and the Make a Wish foundation people. 
Finally, it was time to go home. When we arrived all of his friends were there. The croud cleared and what did appear??? The latest design by Aprillia that is not even in the shops yet! Chris was over the moon, só happy! 

 Nu is het jaar bíjna voorbij. Nu iets minder zorgen omdat het goed met hem gaat, en een beetje zorgen dat hij nu de héle tijd op de brommer aan het rijden is, hahaha. Gelukkig voor hem is het geen echte winter! Hij heeft al bijna 100 km gereden... Hij heeft wel de motorjas van zijn vader gekregen, dát en met de nieuwe helm ben ik niet meer zó bezorgd.

Now that the year is almost over, a little less worries because he's doing fine. A bit more worries because he spends all his time riding! He's got almost 62 miles under his belt. He got the motorbike coat from his dad and with the new helmet I'm not thát worried anymore.

Dus, iedereen die geholpen heeft óver de grens en in Nederland: DANK JE!
So, including everyone that lives abroad and everyone in the Netherlands: THANK YOU.

En voor het nieuwe jaar: gewoon op nieuw beginnen! Bring it on!!!!

Christmas Kerstmis

Ik wil iedereen een héél fijne kerst wensen; vooral met rust, lekker bij elkaar zijn (als dat mogelijk is..) en denk om elkaar...

I want to wish everyone a very merry christmas; with peace and quiet, being together (when they can) and take care of eachother..

A dream...

Een tijdje geleden kreeg ik een mailtje van iemand in mijn mailbox. Ze wilde een shawl gebreid hebben. Geen probleem. Ze kwam langs en we bespraken de opzet en diverse patronen. We waren al bijna klaar toen ik tegen haar zei: kijk, daar zit mijn stash in. En ik wees naar 3 kleine en 1 grote doos. Bij de tweede doos die ik open deed, viel ze als een blok voor een blauw bolletje wat ik al best lang had.

Nieuwe mogelijkheden zorgden voor nieuwe 'onderhandelingen'... Het zou de Myrtle Leaf worden....

A while back I recieved a mail in my mailbox from a woman that wanted me to knit a shawl for her. No problem. She came to visit and we discussed the perimeters. She looked at different patterns and we were almost done with deciding. That was.. until I mentioned she could take a look at my stash. 1 big box and 3 little ones. The second box opened up and she fell in love with some blue yarn on the spot! New 'negotiations' and she decided on the Myrtle Leaf shawl....

 Ik begon meteen met breien, maar na zo'n 20 naalden had ik het idee dat het wel wat fijner mocht. Dus gezakt met de naaldmaat van de gegeven 3,75mm naar 2,75...
Ik was nog zo slim om er dan meteen 2 herhalingen extra bij te doen, anders werd hij wel erg smal.
Ze wilde wel een heel lange shawl, dus ik moest er aan trekken om de lengte te halen!

I started knitting immediately, but 20 needles in, I had the idea that it looked a bit loose. Dropped from US5 to US2! I did have the state of mind to add 2 repeats for width, otherwise it would come out as a scarf..

She wanted a very long shawl, that made me work very hard to reach length.

Dit is de derde 'myrtle leaf' die ik brei, maar geen enkele heeft de originele rand. Die vond ik niet mooi, dus koos ik voor een nieuwe. Ook in true lace en lekker open.
Om de deadline te halen moest ik best hard breien, maar het lukte niet. 3 dagen te laat was hij toch nog af.

 This is my third 'myrtle leaf' patterned shawl, but none of them has the original edging. I didn't care for it, and added another. It's true lace too so it opens up nicely.
To make the deadline I had to work very hard, but I didn't make it. The shawl wás done 3 days later.

  Uiteindelijk is het een heel fijn gebreide kantshawl geworden.

 In the end it's a very fine knitted lace shawl.

Riding the wave... MY way

hot topic at this moment is knitting Xmas balls for decoration, these days. 

The possibilities are plenty, in colour and in size. The gentlemen from Norway were first to put it all in a booklet and they got people out of their chairs and up to the stores.
(now surely widely available in a webstore near you). 

As it should be, most Xmas balls are knitted with 2 colours and classic Xmas patterns. 
I've seen a couple and love several. 

As you may know, I'm not thát good with knitting 2 colours, so I welcomed the mail of a very good friend. She understood my hesitation to join in this latest rage in knitting. 
This is what I made...

1 ball only, knit with lace weight green yarn from Storm in the Attic. The colour green is just perfect for this time of year. It will be a present for a friend.

Een prachtige combinatie / A wonderfull combination

Er is weer een shawl af. Het heeft wel héél lang geduurd voor hij af was! Vorig jaar ben ik al begonnen met het patroon te tekenen. Dat viel nog niet mee... Ik had alleen een foto.

There is another shawl done! This one took a very long time to get done. Last year I started with the charting of this shawl. That was pretty hard, as I only had a picture to go from..

 Ik heb al heel veel shawls online kunnen bekijken. Op de site van het Shetland Museum. De meeste originele shawls zijn 'directional'. Dat betekend dat het midden vaak maar in een richting gebreid wordt. Daarna wordt een nieuwe border gebreid en er aan gezet. Vervolgens komt dan de aangebreide rand.

I've seen a lot of shawls online, in the database of the site of the Shetland Museum. Most original shawls are knitted directional. The center has one pattern/set that is knitted in one direction only. Then a second border is knit and often grafted to the center. Then the edging is added.

 Ik had bèst veel werk om het border patroon uit te zoeken. Nabreien en uitproberen, opnieuw tekenen omdat het niet uit komt en opnieuw breien. Nog maar een keer naar de foto kijken. Nog een keer tellen. Nog een keer breien. Zo leek het middenstuk nog makkelijk! Maar dat was het ook niet. Geloof me, er zitten nog 'fouten' genoeg in...

I díd have a lot of work on the unraveling of the border pattern. Knitting it, watching if it looked like the picture at all, recharting, re knitting, adapting and trying again. Watching at the copy of the picture, knitting again, and counting a lot. That made the centerpart look easy! But that wasn't the case. Believe me, there are still plenty of 'fault's  in this one..

 Ik had al contact gehad met Bruce, om te vragen of ik de shawl na mocht breien, op Ravelry advies gevraagd wat een redelijk aantal herhalingen zou zijn voor het midden. Of ik de shawl mirrored of directional zou maken. En wat het dichtst bij het origineel zou komen. Want tenslotte had ik maar een halve foto.

In the meantime I had contacted Bruce, to ask if I was permitted to copy knit this shawl. I had asked on Ravelry what would be a reasonable amount of repeats in the center. Whether or not to mirror or directional knit the shawl. Just to come as close as possible to the original. After all, I only had half a picture of the shawl..

 Uiteindelijk is dit het meest dichtbij wat ik bij het origineel kan komen. De aanhechting van de rand ziet er iets anders uit. Ik vermoed dat ze de onderrand eerst heeft gebreid en de rand aan de lange kanten tegelijk met de shawl zelf. Het is mij niet gelukt om de rand met gaatjes/omslagen zo te krijgen.Vooral omdat ik al begonnen was met het breien van het midden. Maar hij lijkt best goed!

In the end this is the closest I could get to the original. The edging is a bit different. I suspect she knitted the edging first and then knitted shawl and both edgings on the long sides at the same time. I couldn't manage to get the rows of yarnovers/holes to match in the end. Mainly because I had already started with the center. But I came very close...

 Nu stuur ik de foto's naar Bruce met de vraag of ik toestemming kan krijgen van zijn tante, die het origineel heeft gebreid, om deze shawl te publiceren en het patroon te mogen verkopen.

Now I will send the pictures to Bruce, hoping to gain permission from his aunt, who knitted the original, to publish this shawl and sell the pattern.

Het garen is bíjna het zelfde als dat van de Shetland Sweetheart. Hier zit geen kameel in, maar angora. (met cashmere en merino). Daardoor is hij best kwetsbaar...
Ik heb gelukkig nog méér garen met kameel in precies dezelfde kleur...

The yarn is almost the same as of the Shetland Sweetheart. In this there is no camel, but angora. (with cashmere and merino). That makes it extra delicate...
Luckily have móre yarn (with camel in it) in the exact same colour...

Toen had ik me iets bedacht...
Ik heb heel veel uren naar shawls op internet gekeken. Ik wil ze eigenlijk nog liever in het echt zien!
Dus heb ik besloten van al het geld dat ik verdien met patronen, workshops en opdrachten mezelf naar de Shetland Eilanden toe wil breien!!! Ik hoop volgend jaar te gaan, wanneer ze (hopelijk) weer een Shetland Wool Week organiseren in oktober.

Then I thought of something...
I've spent many an hour on the net watching the shawls. I truly want to see them for real!
So, I decided to save my earnings of commissioned knits, pattern sales and workshops and work my way to the actual Shetland Isles! I hope to go next year, when they organize another Shetland Wool Week in October (not sure yet..)

Handwerkbeurs Rotterdam 2011

In de nieuwsbrief stonden ze al; foto's van mijn nieuwste ontwerpen!

Ik mocht voor Bart en Francis een shawltje in pure zijde ontwerpen. Omdat het een prachtig item is geworden noem ik het: Little Jewel.

CORRECTIE! Deze shawl zal met patroon te krijgen zijn op de beurs in Zwolle 2012!

Ook mocht ik voor De Zeven Katten een setje shawls ontwerpen met het garen van Kaalund.
Allereerst een lange brede shawl in 100% wol. Deze shawl heet 9 Levens en meet 60 x 170 cm met slechts 2 bolletjes garen.

 Omdat katten nogal bewegelijk zijn, is het een dynamisch patroontje geworden dat 9x herhaald wordt.

 Het andere garen van Kaalund is 100% zijde in rood tinten. Voor deze korte shawl is maar 1 bolletje nodig.

 Dit shawltje is niet erg lang, maar kan makkelijk omgeslagen worden en is een lust voor het oog.

Vraag er naar bij de stand van De Zeven Katten op stand 026 in Rotterdam.

Beide patronen van De Zeven Katten en Bart & Francis worden gebreid met naald 3,5 en zijn voor de beginnende en gemiddelde kantbreiers.

Let op! Heeft u het patroon voor Kiss of 9 Levens op de handwerkbeurs gekocht? 
Het is verschrikkelijk fout gegaan. De charts kloppen!!! Maar de uitgeschreven rijen zijn niet in orde.
Als het goed is komen de gecorrigeerde patronen in week 44 (eerste week november) weer op de site van De Zeven Katten. 
Excuses voor het ongemak.

Goed nieuws / Good news

Héel goed nieuws.
Chris moest vorige week voor de CT scan, de buik/torso echo en een MRI.
En gister belde de oncoloog zelf om kort en krachtig te zeggen dat alles er goed uit zag. Bloed was gechecked en dat was ook in orde.
Opluchting. heél veel opluchting.

Finally.
Good news.
Very good news.
Chris was undergoing some checks last week: CT, echo of the torso and an MRI.
And yesterday the oncologist called himself to tell us in very short terms that everything was fine. His blood was tested too and that was okay also.
Relief.
Very much a relief.

Party time!
Chris heeft dit weekend z'n feestje; hij werd in mei al 16 en alhoewel we toen ook al goed nieuws hadden gekregen, was het nog lang geen tijd om wat te vieren. Nu wel!!! Er komen zo'n 15 vrienden om te barbequen (het is tenslotte prachtig weer...)


Party time!
Chris is having a party this weekend. Although he turned 16 in May, and we got some good news then too, it wasn't time to party.. yet. But nów it is!!! Some 15 friends are coming over to have a barbeque with him. (it is very nice wheater for it...)

Sommigen hadden het al gelezen op twitter (@kantwerk) maar had je het nog niet door... we zijn blij!!!

Spread your wings...

Na het euvel in de vorige post, is het toch nog goed gekomen! De shawl is Peacock Feathers van D. Siemens. Een prachtig patroon en mijn opdrachtgeefster had in Duitsland hele mooie kidsilk in diep donkerblauw gevonden. Het is iets dunner dan Rowan Kidsilk en dat scheelde! Het breide heerlijk en ik hoefde minder te niezen. Ook véél minder pluis!

After the trouble in my last post it all came right again. Nothing shows! This is the shawl by D. Siemens; Peacock Feathers. The woman who commissioned this shawl had purchased some lovely deep blue kidsilk from Germany. It's a bit skinnier than Rowan Kidsilk and made me sneeze a lot less. It didn't shed as much either.

Technisch gezien in 14 'dagen' gebreid, maar hier zat niet een harde deadline op. Dus ik kon zelf ook rustig genieten van het breien zelf.

There was no hard deadline on this shawl so i had the time to really enjoy the knitting itself. Technically it only took 14 'days'...

Deze shawl gaat morgen op weg naar Denemarken. Ze is er nu al blij mee...
This shawl will go to Danmark tomorrow. She's happy already!
