Fruity Knitting Interview

This time a short blogpost. Because.. You can see and hear me talking about my lace-knitting on the latest episode of Fruity Knitting!

Brain Waves

Soms, soms gaat het niet altijd volgens de planning. Een ontwerp lag er al, maar de juiste vorm was nog best lastig om te vinden.
Ik wist al wel dat het een soort van driehoek zou worden. Ik mocht een workshop geven bij Ajoure in Joure en kreeg een beetje Yak garen om een voorbeeld mee te breien. Dat werkte erg lekker, maar het zat me niet helemaal lekker. Een driehoek beginnen is niet zo'n probleem, maar hoe dan verder?

 

 Sometimes things don't work out according to plan. A design was being worked on, but the right shape turned out to be a real problem. I imagned a triangular shape. I was giving a lace class in Joure (NL) and got send a bit of Yak yarn. Which was a delight to work with. But it kept on nagging me. Starting a triangle is not too difficult, but then what. 

Dus op een gegeven moment maar gewoon begonnen. Met werkelijk heerlijk garen van Skein Queen Finesse Nouveau. (800m/100gr)
En net zo lang doorgebreid tot ik al 82% van het garen had gebreid. Zonder enig idee te hebben hoe dit zou 'eindigen'.
Door het patroon maar aan een kant uit te breiden, was het eerste stuk al behoorlijk lang.

So, at some point I started knitting and used delicious yarn by Skein Qeen Finesse Nouveau. (875y/100gr)
I kept on knitting until 82% of the yarn had been used. And still no clue how to end this.
By only increasing on 1 side, the piece I had was already pretty long.

 Plotseling maakte het patroon zelf duidelijk welke kant het op moest gaan. In spiegelbeeld weer terug! Een parallellogram! Dat had ik nog nooit eerder gedaan. Dus, meteen een andere kleur uitgekozen om verder te gaan. Maar, op een of andere manier klopte het niet. Geen WOW factor. dus weer uitgehaald tot de paarse steken weer op de naald stonden.
Wat nu (weer)?

Suddenly, the work itself made clear what the solution was. Mirrored! A parallellogram!
I haven't knit that shape before. So, picked out a contrasting colour to continue. But, it didn't feel good. No WOW factor at all.
Ripped it back until the purple stitches were back on the needle.
Now what?

Er was maar 1 oplossing. Ik vond het wel ERG moeilijk. Het garen waar iemand anders al mee bezig is geweest, over verven. Maar uitelndelijk zag ik geen andere uitweg. Het paars werd diep blauw. En de streng lichtblauw werd okergeel. En toen was de shawl zó maar af.

There was only 1 solution. I did find it terribly difficult to overdye the yarn, a fine yarn somebody had already dyed. But it was the only option, IMHO. The purple became Midnight blue and the skein of lichtblue became a deep yellow. And then, the shawl was done in no time!

Nu heeft het een WOW factor. NIet alleen in kleur, maar ook in maat. Maar liefst 3 meter 25cm! Van begin tot eind. Tjonge.
Ik heb Debbie van Skein Queen een bericht gestuurd dat ik haar garen heb gebruikt voor een ontwerp én dat ik het over geverfd heb. Dat is niet iets wat ik snel zal doen. SORRY Debbie.

NOW it has a WOW factor. Not only in colour, but also in size. Ten feet, 10 inches. Amazing.

I did send Debbie a note, telling her I used her yarn for a design and dyed it. My sincere apologies to her. It is not something I normally do. But in this case, it worked. SORRY.

Day 2

De héle zondag hadden we voor onszelf. Waar te gaan op zo'n groot eiland. Het gebreide hek. Het was al beroemd op Facebook. Nu nog vinden. Dus.. op naar Burra, Hamnavoe

The whole sunday to ourself. Where to go on such a wonderful island. The knitted fence. It was already famous on Facebook. We only had to find it. So.. in the car to Burra, Hamnavoe.

Hamnavoe is een hartstikke leuk visserstadje aan de westkust van Burra. We parkeerderen even aan de rand van het dorp om van het uitzicht te genieten, gingen toen naar de haven en hebben werkelijk het HELE dorp door gelopen. Hamnavoe is a wonderful little fishermans village on the westcoast of Burra. We parked by the councilbuilding to take in the view. Then we went to the harbour and started walking the ALL the streets.

 Het was prachtig weer, dus dat was geen straf. Maar het hek was onvindbaar. Eindelijk kwamen we iemand tegen en hebben het gevraagd; het bleek bij het dorpshuis te zijn. Waar we in het begin waren gestopt om van het uitzicht te genieten. Hadden we ons omgedraaid en een stukkie gelopen, dan hadden we het zó gezien! hahaha.
It was bright and sunny so walking about was a treat. But the fence was nowhere to be seen. Finally we ran into someone who wás able to tell us where it was. It was at the viewpoint we stopped the first time. If we would have turned around and turned the corner it would be right there! hahaha

Voor iedereen die het wil weten: het hek heeft 27 herhalingen. Er is gebreid met vissersnet 'garen' en flinke houten breinaalden. Later in de week heb ik de maakster gezien en gesproken en ze had het materiaal mee. Zo konden mensen even proberen hoe het voelde om zo groot te breien.

For everybody that wants to know: the fence has 27 repeats. Fisherman's netting 'yarn' is used and some bulky wooeden knitting needles. Later in the week I had the opportunity to meet the knitter and she had the material with her. That way people can try how it feels to knit that large.

Toen was het tijd om een stukkie te rijden en te lopen. Het is zo ontzèttend mooi daar. We zijn zo ver gereden tot we niet meer konden en zijn gaan wandelen. Gelukkig hadden we goede schoenen aan. Dit is een tombolo; een stukkie strand tussen 2 watergebieden. Later in de week zul je nog een zien. Het is prachtig! Deze had veel stenen en het klonk geweldig; de golven door de kleine steentjes.
We zijn over het hek gestapt en zo de heuvel op gelopen. Helemaal tot de top hebben we het niet gered, maar we zijn een heel eind gekomen. Het gras was kort, de schapen bang en overal kleine schelpen, En toen... de oceaan! Jéétje wat was dat mooi.

Then it was time to do some driving and walking. It is só amazingly pretty over there. We drove till the road ended and went for a walk. Luckily we had our walking shoes on. This is a tombolo, a piece of beach between two bodies of water. Later in the week you'll see another one. The beach has a lot of pebbles and it gives such a lovely sound to hear the water picking them up in the waves and dropping them back to the land.
We stepped over the fence (it's allowed) and went up the hill. Didn't made it to the top, but we came a long way. The grass was short, the sheep afraid and there were little round shells everywhere. And then there was the ocean. My god, it's gorgeous!

Ik was al een fan van de serie Coast van de BBC. De aflevering over Shetland en Orkney heb ik wel 5x bekeken. Nu was ik er écht! Neil (de presentator) vertelde dat je op Shetland nooit verder dan 3 mijl bent van de oceaan. Op het britse vaste land is dat nooit meer dan 70 mijl..

I was a fan of the series Coast by the BBC. I've seen the episode about Shetland and Orkney about 5 times! And now I was thére. Neil (the host) told us that on Shetland you're never more than 3 miles from the ocean. On the British mainland it's never more than 70 miles..

Now for the unexpected things..

We'd lóve to check out the knitted fence, éverybody's talking about. It's not far away from our little home away from home, so that's on the itinerary for Sunday.

My friend wants to check out some puffins.

Monday the Wool Week will be opened for business and lots of workshops will take off. I'll be at Kate Davies Workshop on Monday afternoon.
(it's also my birthday then, so we have to check out some local shops for treats)

Tuesday we both take of for Voe, and in the afternoon I'll have to race back to Lerwick. Hazel Tindall will learn me (and others) how to best knit Fair Isle.
In the evening we'll meet up with other Ravelers and Liz!

Wednesday we have the day off. Plenty of time to visit the museums then. In the evening I'm showing my stuff in the Jamieson & Smith store with Mary Kay and Gudrun Johnston.

The Shetland Bound is there already on display with all the other designs of the Lace Collection!  

Thursday we take our little car to Unst. The top of the Isle hosts a lot of pretty things, and getting there will involve 2 ferries! The museum holds lace and other heritage items and I'm sure by that time my laptop and camera will be overloaded with pictures.
I don't think we'll see the lighthouse, but it sure is pretty! 

Friday I have time for visiting more museums, or do other things; playing tourist! I'm sure I'll stand out with my length like a sore thumb.

By the time it's Saturday we have to pack our stuff and leave it all behind. I'm sure you'll hear all about it, after that!

Laminaria...

Er was eens... Lang geleden een prachtig ontwerp gesignaleerd op Knitty.
Knitty was alom bekend om intrigerende ontwerpen en oog voor detail in projecten.

Gelukkig is het in al die jaren overeind gebleven, ook en waarschijnlijk voorál na het fenomeen dat Ravelry heet.
Elk kwartaal komen er nieuwe shawls uit, nieuwe trui- en sokontwerpen en nu ook speciale projecten voor handgesponnen garens.
Vooral omdat ik zelf NIET spin, en toch wel een probleem maak van het maken van een twééde sok, te lang ben voor een trui, focus ik me op de kant ontwerpen.

Once, there was... a long time ago a wonderfull design spotted on Knitty.
Knitty is a renowned location for intriguing designs and an eye for details in projects.

Luckily it survived all the years, including or despite the rise of Ravelry, a new phenomenon.
Each quarter of the year a new set of shawls, sweater and sock designs emerge, and recently even projects especially for handspun yarns.
Because I do NOT spin yarn myself, I suffer severely from Second Sock Syndrome and I'm to tall for a sweater I focus on the lace designs.

 En omdat nu na al die jaren, bijna iedereen de Laminaria wel kent, kan ik nu wegkomen met prachtige detail foto's.

 And because the Laminaria is now well known, I can get away with some awesome detailed photographs.

 Herkent u deze nog?? Want deze is eigenlijk niet nieuw. Hij was eerst lichtblauw! Maar omdat ik lekker aan het klooien was met logo's en deze al heel lang in mijn kast ligt, was het tijd voor deze make-over.

 Do you recognize this?? Because it isn't new at all. It was previously light blue. Iceblue to be exact. But when I started working on the new logo and saw that this was still in my home, it was in serious danger of a make-over.

Dus... tijd voor een nieuwe fotosessie en om de tijd te vullen. Ik ben andere projecten die al lang op de naalden staan aan het afmaken, en dat kan nog wel even duren.. 

 So.. time for a new photosession and a bit of a breather. I'm currently finishing other projects that have been on the needles tó long. And it might take longer...

The Shetland Addiction II

Zoals je weet, brei ik heel graag shetland kant. Heel veel patronen zitten gewoon in mijn hoofd en dat vergemakkelijkt het breien. Daardoor wordt het leuker en gaat het nóg sneller. 

Mijn nieuwsgierigheid zorgt er echter voor dat ik nog meer wil weten en leren. 

Dus speur ik de site van het Shetland Museum af naar 'nieuwe' steken of combinaties. Gelukkig ben ik nog láng niet uitgeleerd.

As you know, I really love to knit shetland lace. A lot of patterns are stuck in my head and that makes knitting them a lot easier. And thát makes it more fun and even more quick to knit. 

My curiosity makes me want to learn and do even more. So I cruize on the site of the Shetland Museum to find 'new' combination of stitches and patterns. 

I'm in luck, there is a lot left to learn.

Dit kleine lapje is een patroon wat uit een bruidsshawl komt. Ik kon het in geen van mijn boeken terug vinden, dus dat werd lekker zelf uitzoeken hoe het is opgebouwd. Shetland patronen zijn over het algemeen niet moeilijk, het is alleen even nadenken hóe ze zijn opgebouwd. Vooral een kwestie van veel tellen en uitproberen.

This little swatch is a pattern coming from a bridal veil. (the dark part). I couldn't find this in any of my books, so I had to find out for myself. Shetland patterns often are not very difficult but it's the trick to get them in the right order.
Mainly trial and error..

Dit proefje is een duidelijk voorbeeld van mijn geklooi. Eerst proberen de vorm goed er in te krijgen, dan de middenvakjes toevoegen. En daarna de juiste vorm er in binnen het aantal mogelijke steken. Bovenin is het bijna gelukt. Dit is gewoon een losse rand, die hoort niet bij de Bruidsshawl. (foto origineel Shetland Museum).

 This is a clear example of my attempt to reknit this edging. First to try to get the shape right, then adding the center part and shaping. In the third triangle I almost got it right.

En heel stiekum ben ik begonnen met wéér een shawl van foto af na te breien. Op Nieuwjaarsdag begonnen met tellen en uitzoeken, proefjes gebreid en een chart gemaakt.

Secretly I've started with knitting another shawl from picture. Newyearsday I was busy charting, counting and swatching. 

Eerst de rand gebreid, en nu bezig met de border. Toen ik later nog een keer terug las, blijkt het om een heel klein shawltje te gaan, misschien maar 20 cm breed! Dat wordt die van mij deze keer niet. Ik vind het garen zo mooi, dat ik gewoon nóg een keer een shetland shawl wilde breien met in deze kleur.

First knitted the edging and now working on the border. When I went back to the site and reread the caption, I found out the original is a merely 20 cm wide! My shawl will not be that small this time. I did grab the yarn I like to knit shetland lace with best, i really like the colours.

Het wordt tijd dat ik het allemaal eens in het echt ga bekijken, dus ga ik met een vriendin in oktober naar de Shetland Wool Week!  
It's about time that I want to see it all for myself, so I'll be off to the Shetland Wool Week in October with a friend!

Quick message / Snel berichtje.

Alle onderzoeken zijn afgerond en we mochten naar huis met Chris. De bioptie is genomen, de mergpunctie hebben ze nog niet gedaan. Hij is met contrastvloeistof ingespoten voor de PET-scan en de CT scan is gemaakt. Ze hebben 8 buizen bloed afgenomen en nu is het tijd om alles te bekijken en een beslissing te nemen.
En is het voor ons afwachten. Gelukkig niet de 2 weken die we dachten; hopelijk krijgen we dinsdag telefoon en kunnen we horen hoe het er voor staat met Chris.
Het breiwerk ben ik begonnen toen we voor de eerste keer in de wachtkamer zaten bij de oncoloog. Tijdens al dat wachten op alle onderzoeken kon ik verder breien. Voor mij is dit een no-brainer.. Heerlijk. Het garen heb ik ongezien gekocht tijdens een Valentijns actie van DyeForWool . Het heet Flowering Innocence en is zacht en roze. Het ziet er smal uit, maar er komt een hele brede rand om heen.
All tests are done and we were allowed to take Chris home. The PET-scan is made, after they had injected him with contrast fluids, the CT scan too. The biopt is taken and also 8 viles (?) of blood. Now they want to examine it all and come to a conclusion.
For that we have to wait, we don't have to wait the 2 weeks we had anticipated, but it will probably be tuesday.
The knitting is what I've started the first day we sat in the waitingroom of the oncologist. It's a no-brainer for me.. Lovely pink yarn from DyeforWool. It's called flowering innocence, I had bought it unseen on Valentines day.
It's a bit narrow, I intend to make a very wide border /edging on it.

We willen iedereen bedanken voor het sturen van kaarten! Van de Beebs groep, van Ravelry en gewoon zomaar. Verschrikkelijk lief en dank je voor de lieven woorden.

Shetland Knitting.

De laatste paar maanden ben ik helemaal in de ban van Shetland Knitting. Ik ben hélemaal weg van de patronen, de technieken en de mogelijkheden. En een hele belangrijke rol is weggelegd voor de historische shawls die in het museum hangen.
Ik was in augustus net begonnen met het breien en aanpassen van 'The One'. Eigenlijk is het gewoon de Shetland Lace Shawl uit A gathering of lace, maar omdat ik óók The Queen Susan sjaal erg mooi vond, en er weinig kans is dat ik die helemaal ga breien, heb ik beide gecombineerd. Ik heb een hele nieuwe chart geschreven omdat The Queen van binnen naar buiten gebreidt wordt en deze van buiten naar binnen. Recently I'm totally into Shetland Knitting. I'm smitten by the patterns, the techniques and the possibilities. The history is also a great factor; the most gorgeous shawls are hanging there in the museum. Last August I had just started on 'The One' which is just the Shetland Lace shawl from A gathering of lace. I also fell for The Queen Susan shawl, but I'm not ever going to knit that so I combined the two and wrote a new pattern. I'm knitting inward, and The Queen is knitted outward; and I had to refit it in the number of given stitches.

Ik heb dus de 'zigzag' omhoog gechart, zodat de bogen met het bloempatroon meer ruimte had. In het midden paneel heb ik 1 patroon vervangen; in de borders zitten al genoeg 'oogjes' en ik wilde niet nog meer. Dus een meer open patroon.
Bovendien zul je later in het midden een rij hartjes terug vinden. Het is bijna mijn kenmerk aan het worden, hoewel het niet mijn eigen ontwerp is.
I've shoved back the zigzag pattern in the chart, to make room for the flower pattern. In the centerpanel I've dropped the birdseye pattern, those are plenty in the border and edging. I've changed that into an open diamond pattern.
In the middle you'll find a row of hearts, it's almost my hallmark, eventhough it's not my own design.


Ondertussen was ik via de Heirloom-knitting group op Ravelry terecht gekomen op een website met foto's. Iemand was dus in het museum geweest en had allerlei foto's gemaakt van de shawls die daar hangen. Enórme shawls. Dat gaat me niet lukken. (nog geen geduld). Flink veel foto's uitgeprint, en bestudeerd. En... nagebreidt. Ik had een beetje hulp van het boek van Sharon Miller, en sommige patronen zijn standaard en tekenen zichzelf. Een kwestie van tellen en passen. En dan krijg je dit:

Through the Heirloom-knitting group at Ravelry I came across a picture site from someone who had visited the museum and had taken lots of pictures of the shawls on display. I was absolutely never going to knit something as big as those, but I could try out a small portion. Printed the pictures and started counting, swatching and had a little help from the book by Sharon Miller. And this is what you get.. (top picture)

En toen was er ook deze nog. UREN zitten staren naar het ding. Hier zaten patronen in die ik nog niet kende en ook niet kon terug vinden in de patroonboeken. Dus, maar weer rekenen, passen en meten. Printen en afkruisen. Tellen. Vooral heel veel tellen. Toen een paar proeflapjes gemaakt, uitgehaald en begonnen met het echte werk.
