Hjemme.
 
Het heeft even geduurd, maar dan heb je ook wat. Ruim een jaar geleden was ik aan het spelen met een patroontje. 
De Outlander shawl was net klaar en ik had wat ideetjes waar ik misschien wel wat mee kon. 
Dus wat proeflapjes gemaakt met verschillende garens, chart geknipt en geplakt. 
Het probleem was alleen de vorm. Het is een patroon met veel mogelijkheden, maar ik kon maar geen vorm vinden, waarin het het beste tot zijn recht kwam.

It has been a while, but it was worth it. Over a year ago, I was just finishing up the Outlander shawl, some ideas popped in my head. I made swatches in several yarns, cutting and pasting in charts was easier. But the shape gave me some difficulties. The basic pattern could be used in several ways, but a suitable one was hard to find.

 

Wat ik dan altijd even doe, even op Ravelry kijken wat ik allemaal al gedaan heb, en wat er nog ontbreekt. Ik had nog geen shawl met een Faroese vorm. Hmmmm, dat was een goede keus.
In het midden de mooie diamant en variaties aan de zijkant.
De keuze voor het garen was daarna natuurlijk ook niet zo moeilijk. Een volle 2ply van Shetland wol. Een kleur die zorgt dat het patroon heel mooi uit komt en nu nog de details.

Didn't see a faroese shape yet. Hmmmm, that could be a great choice.  
The diamonds in the centre and some variations on either side!
Yarn choice wasn't so hard after that decision. A full 2ply shetland wool and a colour that would make the patterns pop!

 Je breit de shawl van boven naar beneden, en wanneer je afkant, is het ook klaar. Alleen nog opspannen en draadjes wegwerken. En dragen natuurlijk. 

Omdat Monique Dreef de opdrachtgeefster was en het garen leverde, en omdat we samen naar Shetland zijn geweest, leek het mij een tof idee om elkaar te ontmoeten, werkoverleg noemen we dat. 
Ik houd erg van de zee en op het strand van Callantsoog begin ik me aardig thuis te voelen. Ik rijd er 'zo' even heen op de motor, voetjes in het zand, ogen op de horizon. Mijn 'thuis' als ik niet thuis ben.
Hjemme is het Deense woord voor "thuis".

De Faeröer zijn vanaf de 9e eeuw voornamelijk vanuit Noorwegen bevolkt. In de 11e eeuw kwamen de eilanden onder het gezag van de Noorse koning te staan. Toen Noorwegen zelf een gebiedsdeel van Denemarken werd, kwamen de Faeröer eveneens onder de Deense kroon. Toen Noorwegen in 1814 onder Zweeds bestuur kwam bleven de Faeröer Deens. In 1948 kregen de eilanden verregaand zelfbestuur.
Op sommige zeekaarten uit de 16e en 17e eeuw is ten zuiden van IJsland een groot eiland te zien dat Frisland genoemd werd. Aangenomen wordt dat daarmee de Faeröer bedoeld werden.

Because Monique Dreef was the commissioner of this design, and supplied the yarn, ánd because we went on a trip to Shetland last year, I thought it to be best to meet. Business meeting. Yes. 

I just lóve the sea and I'm starting to feel right at home at the beach of Callantsoog. I often go there when I ride my motorbike, feet in the sand, eyes on the horizon. My home away from home.
Hjemme is the Danish word for "Home".

 Na het werkoverleg met weer nieuwe ideeën, gingen we kijken voor een mooie lokatie om foto's te maken van de shawl. Het was lekker weer, motorpak uit, shawl om en...

After the workbit was done, creating new ideas, we went out to scout some lovely locations to make some pictures. So, the biker jacket and pants had to come off. It was a lovely day with some sunshine...

Om eerlijk te zijn, was ik zelf zo blij met het ontwerp, dat ik de volgende dag mijn (75%) zelfgesponnen garen heb gepakt en meteen nog een shawl heb gebreid!
De wol uit Wales, Hilltop Cloud, had 5 kleuren die ik heb gesponnen. Daarna heb ik het getwijnd met grijze 1ply gossamer Shetland wol van Jamieson & Smith (NL). En deze keer spande ik de shawl op met punten. Ook mooi! 

 To be honest, I was so happy with the design, the very next day, I picked up my own (75%) handspun yarn and casted on! The wool is from HilltopCloud from Wales, I plied it with a 1ply Gossamer Jamieson & Smith (UK) in grey. I blocked the shawl with points, also a beautiful option.

 Schreeuwende stilte. 

 Lerwick

Het is eind september 2016. We, MoniqueB en MoniqueD, zijn voor de derde keer op Shetland. Een grote groep eilanden, zo’n driehonderd kilometer uit de kust van Schotland. Onze voeten staan in de heide van Hermaness, een natuurgebied op het meest noordelijk gelegen eiland Unst.

Er omheen dwarrelen grotere en kleinere rotsen in de oceaan. Op één daarvan, Muckle Flugga, staat een vuurtoren. De wandeling naar de vuurtoren is erg mooi en lang. Het eerste uur  lopen we over vlonders. Ze leiden ons langs de broedgebieden, zodat vogels niet worden gestoord. Op de terugweg is dat schijnbaar geen probleem en loop je door de heide en om waterplassen heen. 

Het mooie is eigenlijk dat je, juist hier, de tijd vergeet. Er is werkelijk niets wat je er aan herinnert. Je vergeet de tijd, omdat er geen geluid is. De oceaan is nog te ver, nog geen schaap gezien en er zijn geen bomen. Alleen aan je kleding kun je zien dat het de 21e eeuw is. Na het vlonderpad is het nog een uur lopen, nu over gras. Hier zijn wel schapen maar ze maken geen geluid. 

Eindelijk zien we de vuurtoren, in de verte, op die rots in de oceaan.  Op omliggende rotsen zien we Jan-van-Gent vogels. Omdat de wandelroute hoog op de rotsen ligt, hoor je ze bijna niet. 

Het pad gaat verder en een bord zegt dat we nu paaltjes moeten volgen voor de terug weg. Na 3 uur wandelen komen we weer een stuk vlonder tegen. Groot genoeg om op te liggen. Dat doen we. Liggen. Ogen dicht. Luisteren. Luisteren naar wat? Er is niets om naar te luisteren. De stilte schreeuwt:… er is niets. 

Nadat mijn hoofd ongeveer 10 minuten (denk ik) aan het zoeken is geweest naar geluid, is het dan ook eindelijk stil in mijn hoofd. Wow.

Kon ik hier maar langer blijven. Stil zijn. Ik besef dat het al eeuwen zo geweest is. En zal blijven.
Zodra we zijn bijgekomen van de stilte, is het nog een uur lopen naar de auto. Naar ‘de realiteit’. Gelukkig is de overgang heel geleidelijk, er wonen namelijk amper  600 mensen op dit eiland van 20 bij 8 km. 

Op Shetland zijn inderdaad meer schapen dan mensen. De meeste lopen los rond, al zijn er wel hekken om te voorkomen dat soorten kruisen. De schapen zijn bestand tegen het harde klimaat, wat een verrassend veelzijdige vacht oplevert. De wol is dik en dun te spinnen, voor sokken, truien en shawls. Het pakt de verf makkelijk op en het kriebelt niet. Bovendien zijn er veel kleur variaties. 

Zo’n 180 jaar geleden hebben vrouwen van Unst, een nieuwe vorm van breien ontwikkeld. Ze plukten de lange nekharen van hun schapen, en sponnen er de hele winter ragdunne draden van. Daar zijn ze, gedurende de zomer, kant mee gaan breien. Ze werden specialisten, ieder had zijn eigen kantpatroon. Er zaten vaak wel meer dan 5 verschillende patronen in een shawl. Een kenmerk van echt handwerk. 

 

Vrouwen die dit konden breien, hoefden niet op het land te werken. Zo bleven hun handen heel om met het fijne garen te werken. Het resultaat is een uitermate fijn gebreide kantshawl, die je letterlijk “door een ringetje” kunt halen.

Op de andere eilanden van Shetland kregen ze het niet zo dun als op Unst. Zou dat te maken hebben met de schreeuwende stilte? Het was een hard bestaan. Wanneer zo’n kwetsbare shawl af was, werd hij geruild voor thee en misschien voor wat eten of kleding. En dan doorwerken voor de volgende shawl. In die stilte...

Deze tekst heeft in de Handwerken Zonder Grenzen No 200 gestaan en is door mij geschreven.
Er hoorde ook een breipatroon bij: "Shellies", vingerloze handschoentjes met een kantpatroon.
Om de handen lekker warm te houden en iets (voor mij) als herinnering aan Shetland. Het besef hoe het daar allemaal tot stand is gekomen en dat het landschap er zéker mee te maken had.

Outlander shawl... 1 year later.

This is all about the Outlander Lace shawl. Previous posts were written (READ) and (READ) 

 
1 year ago, I casted on for the Shetland Stars Shawl. I would make the Square version, and at about the same time 2 testknitters made the rectangle version. 

 I took my knitting everywhere. I wanted people to know you cán take your lace outside and just add a few (or a lot of) rows. I had casted on on July 8th and I was planning to finish by the end of the year. Little did I know...

The plan was to knit the edge, then pick up loops and knit the border. Decreases every second row and the signature Star right at the start. Then immediately after, the centre. But I still had to do calculations to work out the number of repeats to make it long enough for the border to fit.

A special moment, working on the border with the Outlander episode on the TV. 

I'm not at home, I'm at a B&B in Limburg. Quite memorable. 

Commissioned knits came along, Roe,  Sterling, Solana and I presented my first Knit-a-Long: Reach. An exhibition started about knitting in a local city nearby and in December I got a very important (in my eyes) commissioned knit. I was to knit an impression of an apron that was on display. It was very fine, mine need not be that delicate.
There was a catch, it needed to be done by April 4th and it was already January when I got the approval.
So, by the end of December, only 1664m were knitted. 

January 8th. Working a few rows before I go to work. Always room for 1 more... 

And nothing would get done any sooner than April 1st. I felt guilty. I didn't work on the Rectangle version, and now my deadline passed with only 2/5 worked.  The edge + border and most of the centre. 
Quickly casting on for the second edge + border. 

Always a great thing. Watching your work spread out a bit. I knew how it needed to look, I wanted to see if it actually was correct. I was happy and sad at the same time. Happy with how far I got, sad that I was not even close to finishing. I wasn't even half way! 

Claire is wearing the fine lace shawl in episodes 9 and 12. This is 12.

People started asking, when will it be done?? I was knitting as fast as I could, but now things started happening at home. I couldn't concentrate. The second deadline was February/March but I wasn't close. I "wasn't" a lot.
Doing calculations (edge + border was ~720m and the edge + border + centre was 1664m at first), I came to the conclusion it would take up to 4km!!!! WHAT? It's not that I didn't have the yarn... I didn't want to keep people waiting.
May: 

June 13. One set of Edge + Border to go.

July 8. Putting stitches on hold. Knitting is done! 1 year of knitting (a lót!)
Now, I'm scared (again). Grafting will be okay, but will my calculations be correct???
It isn't until July 17 that I have enought courage and time to graft everything. 

There it is! Unblocked: 120cm x 110cm. You can see which borders are grafted to the sides of the centre panel. A stitch has a V shape. A shape that is longer than that it's wide.
So, when you want to put a V onto a <, you'll run short very quick. That's why you need more.

Yarn: 4000m or 4374 y 1/16NM Jamieson & Smith Gossamer 1ply in natural white. (I advise to buy yarn on a cone, so you can knit the borders/centre in 1 piece. It's not in their shop, but you can ask for a cone when you order)Needle: 2mm / US0 circulars 40cm / 16” and 80/100cm or 32”/ 40” or use straight needles 40cm / 16”.
Size: 180 x 180cm or 6ft x 6ft blocked, it might bounce back after blocking a bit.
Also: 8 stitch markers, T-pins, blocking kit or frame, waste yarn for Life Lines, towel, suitable detergent, tapestry needle.
All rows are knit. Please read the instructions before you start knitting.

The design has had a heart warming respons. The picture got 39 shares on Facebook, over 450 likes on Instagram and I even was a contender in the Hot Right now... on Ravelry (Spot 8 of the Top 20!)

I will take this shawl with me to The Shetland Wool Week. I will have a showcase in the Jamieson & Smith store in Lerwick on Tuesday Sept 27th (That's NOT me in the picture! It's Ms. Mary Kay)

I hope you will find the same pleasure in knitting this historic piece, as I have. It might take you longer, or you could be quicker. It is TOTALLY worth it.
