Sort of an Anniversary

Bij het begin beginnen..
Toen ik 16 was, kreeg ik voor het eerst verkering. Hij was ook 16. Prachtige jongen, geweldige tijd. We gingen natuurlijk nog naar school en alhoewel hij in een andere stad naar school ging, haalden we allebei in het zelfde jaar ons diploma.
De wereld lag aan onze voeten en het zou een geweldige zomer worden... Zou..

Lets start at the beginning.
I was 16 when I met my very first boyfriend. He was 16 also. Beautiful boy and we had a great time. We both went to school but he was in a different city, both of us graduated in the same year.
The world at our feet and it would be the start of a great summer.... It should have been...

 Zo waren we in juni op een sport evenement aan het volleyballen. Tot hij omviel en dood ging. Bijna 19 jaar oud. Daar sta je dan... Heel Nederland vierde feest omdat 'we' gewonnen hadden met voetbal en wij (zijn ouders/familie) stonden met lege handen.

 That early summer we were at a sporting event playing volleybal. He fell over and he died.
Barely 19. Just like that. The whole nation was celebrating some soccer event 'we' had won, and we (his family/my family) was left empty handed.

 Wat een schok. Ongeloof. Eigenlijk weten we nog steeds niet wat het nu precies was. Maakt ook niet meer uit. De wereld stond stil.
De rest van de zomer heb ik bij familie gelogeerd, zodat ik even niet thuis was en aan iets anders kon denken.

 The shock. Disbelief. How could this have happened? We still don't know and it doesn't really matter anymore. The world had stopped turning.
I was able to stay with relatives for that summer to get away from it all and think about something else.

 Maar in september moest ik gewoon weer naar school. Ook al kon ik mijn aandacht er toch niet bijhouden; ik kreeg weer ritme. Regelmaat. Het leven ging langzaam weer verder.
Na 3 jaar ontmoette ik (in de zomer) een hele leuke jongeman waar ik nu bijna 21 jaar mee leef en 19 jaar mee getrouwd ben.

 In september of that year I had to get back to school; and eventhough I wasn't able to pay very good attention to what I was doing, it brought ritme and stability.
3 Years later, it was summer again, I met a very nice youngman. I've been spending the last 21 years with him, 19 of those married.

Zo'n 10 jaar geleden werd onze dochter geboren en pakte ik het breien wat intensiever op..

Na verloop van tijd begon ik shawls 'uit te delen'. Mijn moeder was als eerst aan de beurt. Ze heeft inmiddels een behoorlijke collectie van mijn hand. Mijn Oma ook.
Dus besloot ik om voor de familie die mij, 25 jaar geleden, heeft geholpen een moeilijke tijd door te komen; een shawl kado te doen. Gelukkig zijn ze er altijd erg blij mee.

About 10 years ago our daughter was born and I started knitting more frequently...
After a while I decided to give away some of them. My mother got some (she's actually got quite a collection now) and my grandmother too.
So I decided also to give the family that have helped me through a though time 25 years ago a shawl. I was very pleased they all were very happy to recieve one.

Ik ben bijna klaar... Ik moet nog vragen of de moeder van mijn vriendje mijn aanbod accepteert. Dat wordt een hele speciale shawl.
I'm almost done. I have to ask if the mother of my boyfriend will accept my special shawl offer.

En...
And...

Nu dat het 25 jaar terug is dat dát gebeurd is, wil ik het afsluiten met iets positiefs.
Now that this has happened 25 years ago, I want to close it on a happier note.

Summer vacation

Nou, zo'n 'geweldige' zomervakantie was het nou ook niet. Omdat het best frisjes was, kon ik eigenlijk gewoon doorbreien. Dat heb ik dus ook gedaan en zijn er deze zomer wel 3 sjaals en 2 paar sokken afgekomen.

Well, it wasn't a great summer vacation. Because the temperatures weren't that high, I could keep on knitting and that's what I did. And why I finished 3 shawls and 2 pairs of socks this summer.
The Trachtentuch A, (above) Mist Fountains (no pictures yet) and Remains of a Dragon. Remains of a Dragon. A little shawl with the pattern (edging) from Heere be Dragone. I had to use it again, it's só pretty.
The buttons are made by Sophiphi (Ravelry) with antique silk fabric. They come out great! It gives this little shawl several possibilitys in how to wear it.

Remains of a Dragon. Een kleine korte sjaal met een patroononderdeel van Heere be Dragone (de rand). Ik vond hem zó mooi, die wilde ik nóg een keer breien. De knopen zijn gemaakt met antiek zijden stof door Sophiphi (Ravelry). Ze komen prachtig tot hun recht en op deze manier is de sjaal op diverse manieren te dragen.
De Mist Fountains is ook af, maar die moet nog gewassen en geblockt worden.

Heel raar, maar ik miste hem zo. Ik had hem eigenlijk voor mezelf gebreidt, het garen op eigen smaak uitgezocht (hier) en het viel niet mee hem kadoo te doen.
Toen ik het eindelijk in de gaten had dat ik hem 'terug' wilde hebben, heb ik heel lang op internet gezocht naar een soortgelijk garen. Of als het kon, dezelfde kleur.
Maar alles was op.
Very strange, but I missed the thing. It was supposed to be knitted for myself, the yarn (here). was bought to my taste. And it was pretty hard to gift away.
When it finally dawned on me I wanted it 'back', I searched a long time on the net for the same yarn, or at least the same colour But everyone was out.
De zoektocht kwam ten einde in mijn eigen stash. Ik had heel lang geleden eens 2 strengen geverfd en 1 kwam precies in aanmerking ervoor. Daarna nog gauw door mijn voorraad kralen en een combinatie gemaakt.
The search came to an end in my own stash. A long time ago I've dyed 2 skeins and one was perfect for this new project. A little trip through my beadscollection and a new combo was born.

Het garen heb ik Atmosphere Mist genoemd, en deze sjaal zal heten; Mist Fountains. Het waaier patroon in combinatie met de kralen zal als een fontein lijken.
The yarn is called Atmosphere Mist, and the shawl will be called; Mist Fountains, as the fan shapes at the end of the pattern will look like fountains with the beads.

Je zou me moeten zien breien; zo blij als een kind!

Deadline gemist.

Alhoewel ik eigenlijk genoeg tijd had, is het me toch niet gelukt om de deadline die op zaterdag stond nog te halen. Ik ben tot 02:30 die nacht aan het breien geweest, maar het is me niet gelukt. De volgende morgen nog gauw verder gebreid, maar dat had eigenlijk al geen zin meer. Degene die deze sjaal kreeg woont erg ver van ons vandaan dus toen hij eindelijk af was om 10:10 , moest hij nog gewassen en geblocked worden. Dat nog gedaan, maar om half 12 zaten we in de auto. En lag de sjaal dus nog thuis te blocken/drogen... Met lege handen naar haar toe. Vandaag gaat ie dan maar via de post, maar ik vind het erg jammer dat ik hem niet persoonlijk kan geven. Komt ie:

Eventhough I've had enough time to knit and finish it, I didn't make the deadline for this beautiful shawl Bracken. I have knit till 02:30 in the night, it wasn't done. The next morning I did finish it, but still had to wash and block it. I did that too, but I didn't have enough time to let it dry. So I missed the deadline, sat in the car to go to the party emptyhanded... She will get it in the mail tomorrow, but I'm a bit sad.

Het patroon is 5x 1 patroonblok, en dan gespiegeld. Ik heb 2 delen gebreid en in het midden aan elkaar gezet.
The pattern is 5 times a patternchart and then mirrored. I've knitted 2 parts and grafted them together.

Bracken

Wat een rare naam he? Bracken. Ik wist niet eens wat het betekende, maar ik vond het wel erg mooi garen. Bracken betekend 'varen' als de plant. De kleur is dan ook lichtgroen met bruine stukken. Hij was behoorlijk geprijst, maar ja, het is wel precies mijn kleur. Funny name, Bracken. I didn't even knew what it meant, but I liked the yarn and the colour. It means the same as Fern, as the plants. The colours are very similar to the plant: light green with brown bits. It was a bit pricy, but hé, it was just my colour.
Op Ravelry had ik een tijdje terug, via de Friends Activity, een sjaal gezien die ik wel erg mooi vond: de Primavera. Die wilde ik ook maken. En ik had net het boek gekocht waar het patroon in stond dus dat kwam ook goed uit. Het is origineel een ronde sjaal, wat dus nu de waaiervorm verklaard.
Kralen besteld, groen en mat. Ik vond ze er niet goed bij passen. Dus in de kralendoos gegrabbeld en bruin/oranje gevonden. Precies goed. Moest wel opletten dat ik er niet te veel in zet.
On Ravelry I'd seen a beatifyl shawl called Primavera in the Friends Activity list. I'd just bought the book with the pattern in it, so I only had to order some beads. I had green in mind, but that became a bit dull. So my beadbox had some brown/orange beads and added those. I had to be carefull not to use too much. The original is a round tablecloth, so that's why it's fanshaped right now.

Zo, de ene helft is dus nu af, nu pak ik de opzetsteken op om aan de andere helft te beginnen. Iets minder haast deze keer, want er liggen nog genoeg andere projecten te wachten.
So, the one half is done. I only have to pick up the cast-on stitches and knit the other half. Not in such a hurry as this one, there are still enough other projects waiting to be knit.

Uiteindelijk is mijn sjaal toch anders dat die van Susanna.
In the end, my shawl is very different than the one Susanna has made.
