Welkom in het nieuwe jaar! Het oude jaar is al afgesloten maar ik was er nog niet aan toegekomen om te bloggen over het laatste ontwerp van 2017! 

Welcome in the new year! The old year has come and gone, but I wasn't ready to blog about the last design of 2017! 

In augustus was ik in de winkel van... Stephen en Penelope in Amsterdam. Ik viel als een blok voor de Madeline Tosh Prairie in een lichtblauw en blauwgrijze streng.

I was in Amsterdam in August to visit the store of Stephen & Penelope. I fell hard for the Madeline Tosh Prairie in a light blue and a bluegrey.

Er zijn veel dingen bekend van Amsterdam: drugs,  grachten plus tulpen zijn toch wel het beste bekend bij het grote publiek.

There are a lot of things Amsterdam is known for: drugs, moats and tulips are the most famous! 

Dus koos ik voor het water. Ik begon met een punt van een paar steken, naar een stuk met  12 herhalingen. Het zijn geen echte kabels, maar 'Twisted Stitches". Je kunt dit deel dus breien zonder kabel naald. 

So, I chose for water. I started with a point of a few stitches to a piece with 12 repeats. These aren't real cables, but "Twisted Stitches". You can knit this part without a cable needle. 

En de bloemen worden dan meteen aan de zijkant gebreid! Geen gedoe met het opnemen van steken. Meteen door! Dat scheelt. Je begint weer met een paar steken en breit de bloemen tot je geen 'water' meer over hebt.

Then, the flowers are worked immediately to the side of the water. No fuss with picking up stitches. You can go, go, go! This part also starts with a few stitches and you can knit flowers until there is no more "Water" left. 

Dus... Fijn breien!

To be clear.... / Om duidelijk te zijn.

Er is een tijdje geleden een vraag gekomen of ik het patroon wilde schrijven van Diamonds are Forever. Net op een moment dat ik er eigenlijk zelf heel erg zin in had om met wat nieuws te beginnen. Het was een mooi tijdje geleden dat ik die voor het eerst had gebreid dus het voelde weer helemaal nieuw.

 A while back I recieved a request to write a pattern for Diamonds Are Forever. Just in time, I was thinking what to do next and this pattern was made just far enough in the past to make it feel like new.

 Een oproep voor testbreisters was gemaakt en ik mocht me wéér gelukkig prijzen met heel veel belangstelling. Het patroon is geschreven, besproken en in diverse hele mooie uitvoeringen tot leven gekomen. Ik heb zelf een rode gebreid met nupps voor de harten en kraaltjes in de rand.
Lucy koos er voor om alleen maar kraaltjes te gebruiken (ipv nupps) en het origineel was met alleen maar nupps.

I called for some testknitters and plenty were found. I'm really lucky with those people. Pattern got written, discussed and executed in various yarns and colours. Lucy used all beads, I used nupps for the hearts and beads for the edging. The first one I made was white (all nupps) and the second was red.

 Best trots dat er zulke mooie resultaten worden behaald!

Er is alleen 1 klein 'dingetje' wat me van het hart moet.
Mocht je nu al een shawl van Kantwerk hebben gemaakt, of 2...  en je wilt er 1 verkopen, dan vind ik dat niet erg. Er staat DUIDELIJK op elke patroon pagina: niet voor commerciële doeleinden. Graag wil ik dat wel even weten, dan kan ik het in de gaten houden.
Nu stond er onlangs 2 Muness Tower's op Facebook "Te Koop". Kijk, DAT kan dus niet. Ik heb zelf ook mijn geld verdiend door van een ontwerp maar 1 te breien.
Het moet echter geen lopende band werk worden. Het moet niet zo zijn dat er volgende week een groene hangt en die week erna een roze etc. Dat kan ik niet waarderen. Ik hoop dat je het begrijpt.

One little thing is bothering me though.
When you've made one shawl designed by A Passion for Lace, or two... and you want to sell one.
I understand. On EACH pattern page is a footnote: not for any commercial purpose. Please let me know if you're planning on it, I'd like to know.
The other day there were 2 Muness Tower's  "For Sale" on Facebook. I have a BIG problem with that.
I know I've made a living with selling knitted shawls but only by knitting ONE. It shouldn't become production work, this week a pink one and next week a green shawl. I DO NOT APPRECIATE THAT. I hope you understand.

Ripple

 In de Lente kreeg ik weer een opdracht om met zijde te werken. In de loop van de tijd ben ik eigenlijk best gek op zijde geworden. Het heeft gewicht, glans en het valt mooi. In het engels heet dat 'drape' en in het nederlands is het toch moeilijk om daar een goed woord of een goede omschrijving voor te vinden.

Before the summer I got an assignment to work with silk again. In these past few years I've become very fond of silk. It has some weight to it, it drapes very nicely and it has that shine to it.

 Het was (alweer) de Powder Silk van Bart & Francis uit Belgie. Het is net niet wit en het heeft een stevige draad. Héérlijk om mee te werken. Ik had al een tijdje een proeflapje en na goedkeuring ben ik er mee aan de slag gegaan.

It is (again) the Powder Silk by Bart & Francis from Belgium. It's off white and it has a firm size of yarn. I really like working with this. I already had a swatch and after approval I went to work.

De kleine golfjes lopen uit in een prachtig blad patroon wat vooral heel mooi uit komt in de punt. Je begint boven aan en breit naar de rand toe. In dit patroon leer je ook een 'nieuwe' techniek; de gespiegelde versie van de 'brei in de voorkant en achterkant van de steek).

The little waves end in a gorgeous leaf pattern. Which comes out best in the point. You start at the top and work down to the edging. In this pattern you'll learn all about the mirrored version of the 'knit in front and back of the stitch'.

Pattern: Ripple
Yarn: Powder Silk by Bart & Francis 500m or 2 cones
Needle: US 4 or 3,5mm
Charted, some rows are written out (mid-section).
69cm/27” at the centre point and 150cm/57” wide

Pivot

 Zo nu en dan kan ervaring in de weg zitten. Je denkt; oh dat moet zo.. en vervolgens klopt het niet. Dan pas je het aan en dan lukt het helemaal niet meer...
Wat klopt er niet?? Hoe kán dat nou..
En dan haal je het uit, volgt de regels (valt niet mee...) en ja, dan komt het toch uit.
Even wennen, maar ja.

Now and then experience can get in the way. You think: oh, it has to be done like this, and subsequently it goes wrong. You adapt it and it still isn't right.. What?? Am I doing something wrong?? You read it again, stick to the rules (because you have to..) and hé, it works after all.
It takes a bit to get used to. 

 Het garen was lekker om mee te breien; Manos Del Uruguay Lace in bruin. Het patroon vroeg om 3,75 mm naalden en die had ik ook nog liggen. Het waren erg korte bamboenaaldjes, die schoten dus regelmatig onder mijn arm vandaan.
Ik brei, als het ook maar éven kan, altijd op rechte naalden. Ik heb dus meteen maar HIER een paar extra naalden besteld die wél lang genoeg waren.

 The yarn was perfect to knit with, Manos del Uruguay Lace in brown. The pattern asked for US 5 size needles. I had those, but in bamboo and very short. The slipped away from under my arm frequently.
When ever possible I always knit on straight needles, so I ordered some more lengthy needles in this size HERE.

 Toen was de rand aan de beurt. Ik zette op, en begon. Het lukte niet! Hè, niet weer...
Nog een paar keer (7x) proberen, maar nee. Toch maar gemaild met de ontwerpster en na mijn uitleg bleek er een klein foutje in te zitten. Geen probleem, aangepast en toen was het zó maar klaar.

 Then the edging needed to be done. I casted on, and started knitting. Hé, it doesn't go right. What?? Again?? Tried some more (7 times) and eventually mailed the designer with my findings. It happened to be a small glitch and after it was worked out the edging was done pretty quick.

Jinni from the block...

 Laatst was ik bij de friese Stitch'n'Bitch avond in Leeuwarden en zij vroeg of ik nog tijd had om een voorbeeld voor de shop te breien. Het liefst zo gauw mogelijk, dan kon hij ook nog mee naar de Brei en Haakdag in Nieuwegein.

Eerst dacht ik nee, dat lukt niet. Maar ik werd verleid door het garen, de kleur maar vooral door de vorm van het patroon. Zoiets had ik nog niet gebreid!

The other day as was at the frisian Stitch'n'Bitch evening in Leeuwarden en she asked me if I could knit her an example for her shop. Preferably as soon as possible so she could take it with her to the Knit and Hook day in Nieuwegein.

At first I thought I couldn't. But I was seduced by the colour, the yarn but mainly the shape of the shawl... I hadn't knit this shape before! 

 Na een paar rijen groeide het stekenaantal al vrij sterk. En ondanks dat het patroon maar 7  herhalingen heeft, zat ik aan het einde al met ruim 370 stk op de naald. Maar omdat het toch kantgewicht is, pastte het makkelijk. Het duurde wel steeds langer voor ik het rijtje uit had gebreid.

 After only a few rows, the stitchcount goes up pretty quick. And eventhough the pattern is repeated 7 times, the stitchcount near the end was over 370 per row. It fits on my lace needles perfectly as it is laceweight yarn. But it took increasing amounts of time to knit a single row.

 Het leuke van dit model is dat het midden een prachtig patroontje heeft. De 'vleugels' hebben een heel andere structuur en een duidelijke richting wat het midden weer benadrukt. En je kunt hem over je schouders dragen zodat je het midden goed ziet.
Of.. zoals ik ze zelf zou dragen (bovenste foto) : lekker om je nek met het garen heerlijk tegen je huid.

The wonderfull thing with this shape is that the center really stands out. The 'wings' are having a totally different structure and direction. They do make the center stand out perfectly.
You can wear it around the shoulders, with full view of that section, but I like to wear it the other way around (like the top picture). Close to the skin...

 LET OP! Wanneer je deze shawl gaat blocken, let op de punten. Ik heb eerst punten getrokken met de block kit draden en daar overheen nieuwe punten opgespannen. Anders krimpt het patroon ineen.
En let op de vorm van de shawl. In het patroon staat een duidelijk voorbeeld hoe dat er uit komt te zien. Block eerst het midden en dan de punten hoog neerleggen en bijspannen.

ATTENTION! When you are about to block this shawl, take notice of the points. At first I pinned out the points with blocking wires, and then I pulled out the points of the shawl over that. Otherwise the pattern doesn't come out to it's full potential.
And please take notice of the shape. In the pattern there's a clear example of it. First pin out the centerpattern, then the long tips on each side higher and fix. Then work out the sides .

Quick Silver

Soms... sóms heb je zo'n zin in een project dat het voorbij is voor je het weet. Het patroon werkt dan mee, het garen breit lekker, je hebt de tijd...
Sometimes.... sómetimes you are so into a project that it's done much sooner than you had anticipated. The pattern works out great, the yarn complies, time on your hands... 

Dat was het geval met deze shawl. Ik was druk in discussie met iemand over een driehoekige shawl dat ik eigenlijk niet kon wáchten om zelf te beginnen. Er stond een op het programma en het garen was al goedgekeurd.
That was the case with this shawl. I was having a discussion with someone about a triangular shawl and it got to the point I couldn't talk anymore... I hád to start one. Luckily I had the yarn, the pattern was chosen so I casted on and got going. 

Dus heb ik opgezet, begon met breien en ik ging maar door en door! De volgende dag ook, en de avond erna nog een keer. En de zaterdag er nog bij en plotseling was hij af!
I sat down, started knitting and kept on going. The next day too, and the evening .. Then the Saturday was gone and the shawl was finished. 

Ik moest wel een beetje niezen van het garen, het pluisde een beetje.
I sneezed a bit during knitting, as the yarn is a bit fuzzy.

het is weer eens zover... / whoop there it is...

Ben je lekker aan het breien... Af en toe het werk even aaien, alleen al omdat het zo mooi is, zo'n prachtige kleur heeft en vooral erg groot wordt...
En dan, terwijl je denkt dat alles klopt, zie je het in eens... Een fout. Een héle dikke fout.
Het patroon gaat in eens links af, terwijl het gewoon recht door moet!

Oh ja. Het garen. Kidsilk natuurlijk.. Zucht. You're having fun knitting a project, and everything is coming along nicely. The shawl is getting bigger and bigger, the colour of the yarn is gorgeous, and every now and then you just pet it because it feels so nice.
Still thinking everything is fine, you pet and see... A flaw. A big flaw. The pattern took a left turn, while it should be going forward...

Oh, and guess the yarn.
Kidsilk. Ofcourse.
8 pennen uithalen is een optie, weet je nog???, maar daar is geen tijd voor. Dus, heel voorzichtig pluk ik het garen los over 10 steken. Zie foto hierboven. Na 2 verwoede pogingen is het niet gelukt om het weer goed te krijgen. Waarom lubbert het zo. Ik kwam geen steken te kort, ze gingen alleen de verkeerde kant op...
Bij poging 3 het werk neer gelegd op een wit papier en zorgvuldig opgebouwd.

Frogging 8 rows in this yarn can be done, remember?, but there is no time for that. So, very carefully plucked the yarn loose over 10 stitches. See the picture above. After two fruitless attempts it looked really weird. Why is it so saggy? I had no shortage of stitches, they just went in the wrong direction.
At attempt 3 I layed down the knitting on a white piece of papier and reknit the whole thing.
Alleen nog de rand te gaan, dan is ie klaar. Wel blijven opletten! hahaha.

Only the edging to go, then it will be done. Have to pay more attention! hahaha

Damask

Ik mocht weer een shawl breien die naar Amerika gaat. Het project zou de Damask worden, het liet op zich wachten tot het juiste garen en kleur gevonden was. Dat duurde even, maar uiteindelijk werd het 100% pure zijde. Het was erg dun (2/80 NM) maar dat is door de leverancier opgewonden tot een 7 ply cone.

I was commissioned a shawl to be knit that would end up in the United States. The assignment was the Damask shawl, but it took a while before the right yarn and colour was found. The decision fell on the 100% pure silk, awefully thin with 2/80 NM but the supplier wound it into a 7 ply cone.
Eerst een swatch gemaakt; van onder naar boven: 4,0 mm / 3,75 mm en 3,5 mm. Omdat het zijde is, niet getwist garen en er nupps in komen waren sommige onderdelen best lastig breien. Een hele kunst om alle 7x7 draadjes mee te krijgen om een nuppje te breien. Gelukkig zaten er niet zo veel nupps in deze shawl.

First I made a swatch; from bottom to top: US6, US5 and US4. Because the silk hasn't got any stretch, is not twisted and there were nupps to be knit I had to swatch first. It was quite a task to pick up all 7x7 threads to make a nupp. Luckily there weren't that many.

Dit is een close-up. Prachtig reliëf in de shawl, een afwisseling van recht en averechte steken, nupps en oogjes. Oh ja, de shawl wordt van onder naar boven gebreid, en omdat ik een naald maat gezakt was vergeleken met het origineel, heb ik besloten om de grootste versie te breien.

This is a close up. Wonderfull dimensions in the shawl, the interaction between knit and purl stitches, nupps and eyelets. Oh, the shawl is knitted from bottom to the top, and because I had downsized the needlesize, I made up for it by knitting the Large.

Blocked.

Kijk eens wat mooi! Hij valt prachtig! Ik was al verliefd geworden op haar shawl, dus ik was erg blij dat ik dit patroon een keer mocht proberen.

Look how beautiful! It drapes só nice. I already fell in love with her shawl, so I was very happy to try out this pattern.

Ik ben er zeker van dat de nieuwe eigenaresse erg blij met deze Damask zal zijn. Hij is onderweg!
I'm sure the new owner will be very pleased with this Damask. It's on it's way!

With this dragon, I thee wed...

Er was eens een jongen en een meisje, die gingen trouwen. Zij wilde graag een sjaal, gezien op Ravelry, met een draak op haar trouwdag dragen.
Maar er was maar zo weinig tijd, en nog zoveel te doen. De site waar ze de sjaal had gezien bood misschien uitkomst. Waarom zelf doen, als er zoveel anderen kunnen helpen...
Dus een oproep gedaan, namen vielen, suggesties gedaan en ja.... Er waren wel een paar mensen die wilden helpen om de wens van het meisje uit te doen laten komen.

Once upon a time, there were a boy and a girl who wanted to be married. She had seen a shawl on Ravelry, with a dragon. Perfect for her weddingday.
But.. so little time, so much to do. Maybe the site could help out with getting it done. After all, where else are so many friends to help out.
She cried for help and help was offered and suggested. Names were dropped and in the end there were several people wanting to help with the wish of the bride to be.
Er werd met de snelle post (e mail) uitgevogeld met welk garen het zou moeten gemaakt worden. Het is tenslotte een speciale dag...
Er werden afspraken gemaakt en plotseling waren daar al de eerste foto's van de sjaal.

There was some quick correspondence (e-mail) to find out what material was going to be used. After all, it will be a very special day.
There were agreements made and suddenly some the first pictures were send out of the shawl.

De grote dag kwam steeds dichterbij. De sjaal groeide langzaam, er was een staart zichtbaar, toen een deel van de vleugels, een buik.

The big day was approaching. The shawl grew and grew, there was a tail, a part of it's wings and even a belly.
Er verscheen zelfs een kop met een duidelijk oog... De draak was bijna compleet!
Eventually even a head appeared with a clear eye.. The dragon was almost done..

Het was nog maar een week voor de grote dag, en de bruid kreeg het bericht dat de sjaal af was, en nu alleen nog een rand gebreidt moest worden. Het zou gaan lukken!

It was only a week before the great day, the bride got the message that the shawl was done, that only the edging had to be knitted. It would all come together!

En ja hoor, het kwam goed. Op de afgesproken datum was de sjaal klaar, opgespannen en netjes ingepakt op weg naar de aanstaande bruid. Klaar voor de grote dag.
And yes, it all worked out. The shawl was done on the given day, blocked and neatly packed on it's way to the bride to be. Ready for the big day.
