The Shetland Stars Shawl (Rectangle!) (aka The Outlander Shawl).

In een vorige post (DEZE) vertelde ik over het ontstaan van een shawl ontwerp. Dat is inmiddels een half jaar geleden. Er is hard gewerkt door mijn test-breisters. DANK JE WEL!
Ik ben zelf ook nog druk bezig met de vierkante versie, vooruitgang is helaas even erg langzaam. Daar komt verandering in, spoedig!

In a previous post (THIS one), I told you all about the development of a shawl design. That was 6 months ago. My testknitters have been working very hard. THANK YOU!!!
 I'm still working on the square version, progress is slow. Soon, it will pick up speed again! 

De rode shawl is gebreid door DominiqueBe (haar naam op Ravelry). 

The red shawl has been made by DominiqueBe (her Ravelry name). 

Om er voor te zorgen dat meer mensen dit ontwerp kunnen maken, heb ik gekozen om 2 versies te schrijven. Niet iedereen wil een héle grote vierkante shawl (of heeft daar de tijd voor) en is blij met een rechthoekige shawl. Daarom ben ik erg blij dat NU al de rechthoekige shawl als patroon beschikbaar is!

To make sure that more people can knit this design, I've chosen to write 2 files. Not everyone wants a large square shawl (or has the time to make it). They are happy with a rectangle version. And that's why I'm glad I can offer just that, right NOW!

De "Fawn" shawl is gebreid door seaglass (haar naam op Ravelry).

De prachtige sterren zie je terug in de rand en zul je zeker goed zichtbaar kunnen dragen. Het is toch een patroon wat niet vaak voorkomt in kanten shawls en ontwerpen. 

The gorgeous stars are worked in the border and are very visible during wearing. It is a pattern you hardly see in lace knitted items. 

Je breit eerst de border, dan meteen het midden. Dan brei je nog een border en die zet je vast aan het laatste stuk van het midden. Zodra dat allemaal aan elkaar vast zit, dan brei je de eenvoudige rand er omheen. 

 First you knit the border, then you work the centre pattern. Then, you work another border and graft that onto the other end of the centre. To close it nicely, you work an edging all around.

Het wordt niettemin best nog een lange shawl. Het hangt van je persoonlijke brei-hand af, maar het kan varieëren van 190cm - 218cm lengte! (of hoe hard je durft te blocken!)
Best lekker om te dragen en toch luchtig.

Nevertheless it will be rather a large shawl. It depends on your personal knitting style but it could run up from 34" to even 38"! (Or how fierce you dare to block it!)
That is a lot to wrap yourself into!

Pattern: The Shetland Stars Shawl (formerly known as: The Outlander shawl)
Design:  A Passion For Lace... (Only in English so far, Nederlandse vertaling komt er aan!)
Shape:   Rectangle minimum approx: 34" x 75" (red) or 38" x 86" (Fawn)
Yarn:    (red) Midara Micro 1600m/100gr (Estonian fine lace yarn) approx. 2400y or 2200m.
              (fawn) Jamieson & Smith Gossamer 1600m/100gr (Shetland) approx. 2400y or 2200m
Needle: 2mm or US0 (circular if prefered: 16" for main knitting and 32" for the edge (mainly to
              hold all picked up loops). Straight needles will do fine also (carbon, bamboo, metal,
              anything you want...)

The pattern has 4 charts, NO written rows, and explains how to work the edge (wrap & turn).

There is an option to join in on the knit-a-long (not a mystery this time) to help each other to keep it going until the thing  shawl is done...

Roe

In 2014 was ik voor de tweede keer op Shetland. (klik hier wanneer je het toch nog even terug wilt lezen). Ik wandelde toen op Muckle Roe. Mooi, groen, rood en lekker rustig. 

 Back in 2014, I was on Shetland soil for the second time. (click here if you want to read about it again). I walked on Muckle Roe; it's green, red, silent and very pretty. 

 Genoeg inspiratie voor een nieuw patroon. Omdat zo'n eiland alleen maar uit rotsen bestaat met gras, heide en schapen (en wat mensen) er op, begin je op andere manieren te kijken. Structuren, kleuren, dieptes. 

 Plenty of inspiration for a new pattern. Because the island consists of rock with only grass, heather and sheep (and some people)living on it, you start to look at things in a different way. Structures, colours, perspectives, depth perception.

Dit garen is van Fyberspates (100% Cashmere) maar helaas niet meer leverbaar. Ik vond de kleur zo mooi en het patroon leek erg op het landschap van Muckle Roe. Jammer genoeg had ik al wat gemaakt met het garen, dus ik moest ander garen zoeken bij dit ontwerp. 

The yarn for this design was by Fyberspates (100% Cashmere) but unfortunately discontinued. I liked the colour very much as it resembled the landscape of Muckle Roe.
Also, I'd run out of yarn for a full shawl, I had played with the cashmere before... So I could use this for another yarn. 

In juni gaf ik een workshop in Limburg bij Het Wolbeest. Het leek me leuk op speciaal voor de workshop een nieuw patroontje te ontwikkelen en Alexandra was van plan om speciaal garen te verven. Ik koos fris groen! En dat bleek prima te passen bij het patroontje wat ik al had. 

In June I gave a workshop in Limburg at Het Wolbeest. I thought it would be fun to create a new design for the workshop to practise on and Alexandra was planning to dye some wool especially for the occassion. I chose a fresh green! And that was very suitable for the pattern I already had started on. 

 Het zijn 2 eenvoudige kantpatronen die in elkaar overlopen. Maar in het ene patroontje zit wat reliëf met averechte steken aan de voorkant. Zo wordt het niet saai en wisselen ze elkaar netjes af. Je kunt dus eigenlijk ook kiezen om maar 1 patroontje te gebruiken voor de hele shawl.

I've used 2 simple lace patterns, which flow into one and another very smoothly. The 'second' pattern has a bit of depth to it, with purled stitches in the front. This way, alternating the patterns keeps it interesting and you can even choose to use just one for an overall pattern. 



Een eenvoudige rand die aan wordt gebreid en je hebt een mooie zachte fris groene shawl! (of een andere kleur die je leuk vind).

Adding a basic patterned edge and you can wear a very nice fresh green shawl! (or any other colour you choose!)

Komodo

Komodo.

Een Komodo varaan woont op een eiland in de Indische Oceaan dat bij Indonesië hoort. Ze hebben niet echt schubben of zien er uit als een fantasie draak. Het is echter wel een heel uniek dier. Ik vind het een prachtig dier om te zien, je kunt hem zelf bekijken in het Reptielen huis van Artis.

De vormpjes in deze shawl vond ik wel wat op 'schubben' lijken. 

 Komodo.

The Komodo 'dragon' is living on an island in the Indian Ocean, part of Indonesia. They don't really have a scaled skin or are like a fantasy dragon in real life. They are pretty unique though. I really like their 'look'. I've seen one (small) for real at the Zoo Artis in Amsterdam this Fall.

 De patronen kunnen worden geaccentueerd met kraaltjes. In het engelse garen van Posh Yarn heb ik gele kraaltjes gebruikt.

 The patterns in this design can be accentuated by small glass beads. In this case yellow to go with the Posh Yarn. (this colour is no longer available, but she has plenty to go around)..

 Het rode garen is heerlijk zachte lamswol, gewoon uit Nederland. Verkrijgbaar in vele kleuren maar in het rood toch wel erg mooi. Door de vorm van de shawl blijft hij goed zitten wanneer je hem draagt. Wel opletten, de binnen rand is een tikkie kwetsbaar.

The red yarn is wonderful soft lambswool from the Netherlands. Available in plenty of gorgeous colours, but very pretty in red. The shape of the design makes it very versatile to wear and it will stay put very easy. Please take note that the inner edging is a bit fragile.

Mocht je het patroon tijdens de Breidagen hebben gekocht, dan zitten er fouten in:
Er kunnen 881 kralen toegevoegd worden (8/0 maat)
In instructie 3 staat dat je de chart 2 drie keer moet herhalen. Dat klopt. 
Maar niet rij 48-83 drie keer herhalen. Dan heb je 258 steken, en niet 262 of 274.

Het spijt me als dit tot vertraging of problemen heeft geleid.

Let's face it. Shetland is more than just WoolWeek. How much I thoroughly enjoy the talks and workshops about wool, techniques and spinning, knitting etc., I was struck by the beauty of this islands the second I set foot on it, 2 years ago.

First look: Sumburg 

Because I deliver mail 4 times a week, I tend to walk a lot. I do that without any resentment and found there are amazing walks on these islands. Both times, 2012 and 2014, I went to Burra: 

And it was sunny weather and a great walk.
In 2012 there was Hermaness at our feet. Not this time, we spent time at Norwick (Unst).
A short walk on a long beach. I stood on a rock but the waves were quick and I got my feet wet. 

The day before I had chosen to talk a walk on the 'red' island. I had looked on my little map to find a place I hadn't been before. And somewhere I could walk and be back in time for the next workshop.
Muckle Roe. Just take a left at Brae and you'll have to hold on to your seat!

It doesn't 'look' special but it sure was. Wikipedia told me there was a small bridge (there was) and that the island has red rocks. It does. 

 I didn't see that anywhere before. It was a bit more rugged than other parts I've walked. After I had reached the end of the road, parked the car and started walking into the fields, I noticed a sign.

 Hé, I can walk 2km and back ánd be back in time for a workshop in Lerwick.

 Little foot holds to make sure the sheep don't escape.. hahaha. No path. So, decided to walk up to the beach.

 This was amazing! Not a soul in sight. Just cute little bunnies. Nature can be cruel, though. I saw their little white tails hopping. Had I been a hunter, I could have shot them. Luckily for them, I'm not.

Now... Where is the 'path' to the lighthouse? 

 Found a path, and kept on walking. Enjoying the view. It was so quiet. Just as quiet as I had experienced on Sandness 2 years ago..

 This just looks like a nice picture but the beach is a lóng way down...

On the blog by Jan, I had noticed a pile of rocks. I had found 'my own'!! Searched for a nice stone to add to this 'memorial'. And one more hill to climb. Had to use the 'riverbed' for lack of other ways to get up the hill. 

The views kept getting better. Although I did start wondering when the darn lighthouse was going to appear.

And finally... There it was. You see that little white boxy thingy? That's it. I think the expression on my face says it all. The walk was great, but I had expected a bit more... well... like this.

Because I didn't get to it in 2012, I thought that maybe, perhaps, somehow, with a similar name, came a similar lighthouse. Nope. Oh well.
It was a great time spent on my birthday. I did manage to phone my husband, even at that remote location. And got back in time for the workshop.

Back to my little red car and to Lerwick. Dreaming of maybe another trip to another lighthouse...

To be clear.... / Om duidelijk te zijn.

Er is een tijdje geleden een vraag gekomen of ik het patroon wilde schrijven van Diamonds are Forever. Net op een moment dat ik er eigenlijk zelf heel erg zin in had om met wat nieuws te beginnen. Het was een mooi tijdje geleden dat ik die voor het eerst had gebreid dus het voelde weer helemaal nieuw.

 A while back I recieved a request to write a pattern for Diamonds Are Forever. Just in time, I was thinking what to do next and this pattern was made just far enough in the past to make it feel like new.

 Een oproep voor testbreisters was gemaakt en ik mocht me wéér gelukkig prijzen met heel veel belangstelling. Het patroon is geschreven, besproken en in diverse hele mooie uitvoeringen tot leven gekomen. Ik heb zelf een rode gebreid met nupps voor de harten en kraaltjes in de rand.
Lucy koos er voor om alleen maar kraaltjes te gebruiken (ipv nupps) en het origineel was met alleen maar nupps.

I called for some testknitters and plenty were found. I'm really lucky with those people. Pattern got written, discussed and executed in various yarns and colours. Lucy used all beads, I used nupps for the hearts and beads for the edging. The first one I made was white (all nupps) and the second was red.

 Best trots dat er zulke mooie resultaten worden behaald!

Er is alleen 1 klein 'dingetje' wat me van het hart moet.
Mocht je nu al een shawl van Kantwerk hebben gemaakt, of 2...  en je wilt er 1 verkopen, dan vind ik dat niet erg. Er staat DUIDELIJK op elke patroon pagina: niet voor commerciële doeleinden. Graag wil ik dat wel even weten, dan kan ik het in de gaten houden.
Nu stond er onlangs 2 Muness Tower's op Facebook "Te Koop". Kijk, DAT kan dus niet. Ik heb zelf ook mijn geld verdiend door van een ontwerp maar 1 te breien.
Het moet echter geen lopende band werk worden. Het moet niet zo zijn dat er volgende week een groene hangt en die week erna een roze etc. Dat kan ik niet waarderen. Ik hoop dat je het begrijpt.

One little thing is bothering me though.
When you've made one shawl designed by A Passion for Lace, or two... and you want to sell one.
I understand. On EACH pattern page is a footnote: not for any commercial purpose. Please let me know if you're planning on it, I'd like to know.
The other day there were 2 Muness Tower's  "For Sale" on Facebook. I have a BIG problem with that.
I know I've made a living with selling knitted shawls but only by knitting ONE. It shouldn't become production work, this week a pink one and next week a green shawl. I DO NOT APPRECIATE THAT. I hope you understand.

Testing! Testing...

Omdat ik vaak wel nieuwe dingen wil proberen, kreeg ik onlangs de kans om een garen te gebruiken waarvan ik nog niet gehoord had én uit NL kwam.
Via facebook had ik het al eens voorbij zien komen, maar nog niet de tijd gehad om er eens goed naar te kijken. (klik op de foto's voor meer details!) 

I'm always one for trying new things, and just recently I got the chance to try out a new release of yarn. I hadn't heard about it and I was surprised it's origin was in my own country (The Netherlands). I had seen it a bit on Facebook, but hadn't taken any time to really look at it. (click on the pictures for móre details!)

 De subtiele kleurvariaties bleken geweldig samen te gaan met het patroon: Tintaglia.

The slightly variegated colour worked out very well with this particular pattern: Tintaglia.

Plots had ik een berichtje van de maker van dit garen: Loret Karman. Of ik voor haar ook een voorbeeld kon breien. Het liefst de Haruni.

 Suddenly I recieved a mail from the dyer of this yarn: Loret Karman. If I could knit her a shawl as an example. Preferably the Haruni.

De kleur was wel een beetje érg blauw, maar na het opspannen en de ruimte van het patroon was het wel een prachtige shawl geworden.

The colour was véry bright, but after blocking the pattern came out very good and it's a pretty shawl!

 Dat smaakte naar meer, want ik mocht er meteen nóg twee breien. De Annis heb ik in 1 dag kunnen breien, Man was thuis en was druk met de kinderen. Mijn gemiddelde steeksnelheid is met déze shawl zienderogen toegenomen...

 Annis was the second. This one is a bit special. My husband was at home to take care of the children so I could finish this in one day.

 Deze shawl is van Boo Knits. Ik zit al wéken te kwijlen bij haar patronen. Wanneer je een shawl ziet, weet je eigenlijk metéén dat hij van haar is. De meeste zijn driehoekig en hebben een werkelijk prachtige dramatische rand met (helaas...) eindeloos veel picotjes....
Er hoefden geen kralen in, maar dat is eigenlijk bij Boo 'verplicht'. Deze heb ik gewoon bij een hobbywinkel gekocht; gevarieerde kleuren van alleen glas naar groen naar 'zeeblauwe' kralen 6/0. Niet op elke 'verplichte' plek maar voldoende om een prachtig resultaat te krijgen.
Ook hier werkt het garen perfect voor dít patroon.

 

This pattern is by Boo Knits. I've been checking out her patterns for wééks on Ravelry. Once you have seen a shawl, you instantly know it's her design. Shapes are almost always triangular, but very pretty and almost dramatic. Unfortunately it's an endless row of picot's.
I didn't have to use beads, but it's almost "Not Done" to omit them. I didn't place every obligatory bead, I placed them where I thought they would fit best.
I bought the beads in a regular craftsstore: from seethrough glass to green to seablue.
The yarn worked with this shawl perfectly!!!

After these 4 shawls, my stitch speed average went up!
