Brain Waves

Soms, soms gaat het niet altijd volgens de planning. Een ontwerp lag er al, maar de juiste vorm was nog best lastig om te vinden.
Ik wist al wel dat het een soort van driehoek zou worden. Ik mocht een workshop geven bij Ajoure in Joure en kreeg een beetje Yak garen om een voorbeeld mee te breien. Dat werkte erg lekker, maar het zat me niet helemaal lekker. Een driehoek beginnen is niet zo'n probleem, maar hoe dan verder?

 

 Sometimes things don't work out according to plan. A design was being worked on, but the right shape turned out to be a real problem. I imagned a triangular shape. I was giving a lace class in Joure (NL) and got send a bit of Yak yarn. Which was a delight to work with. But it kept on nagging me. Starting a triangle is not too difficult, but then what. 

Dus op een gegeven moment maar gewoon begonnen. Met werkelijk heerlijk garen van Skein Queen Finesse Nouveau. (800m/100gr)
En net zo lang doorgebreid tot ik al 82% van het garen had gebreid. Zonder enig idee te hebben hoe dit zou 'eindigen'.
Door het patroon maar aan een kant uit te breiden, was het eerste stuk al behoorlijk lang.

So, at some point I started knitting and used delicious yarn by Skein Qeen Finesse Nouveau. (875y/100gr)
I kept on knitting until 82% of the yarn had been used. And still no clue how to end this.
By only increasing on 1 side, the piece I had was already pretty long.

 Plotseling maakte het patroon zelf duidelijk welke kant het op moest gaan. In spiegelbeeld weer terug! Een parallellogram! Dat had ik nog nooit eerder gedaan. Dus, meteen een andere kleur uitgekozen om verder te gaan. Maar, op een of andere manier klopte het niet. Geen WOW factor. dus weer uitgehaald tot de paarse steken weer op de naald stonden.
Wat nu (weer)?

Suddenly, the work itself made clear what the solution was. Mirrored! A parallellogram!
I haven't knit that shape before. So, picked out a contrasting colour to continue. But, it didn't feel good. No WOW factor at all.
Ripped it back until the purple stitches were back on the needle.
Now what?

Er was maar 1 oplossing. Ik vond het wel ERG moeilijk. Het garen waar iemand anders al mee bezig is geweest, over verven. Maar uitelndelijk zag ik geen andere uitweg. Het paars werd diep blauw. En de streng lichtblauw werd okergeel. En toen was de shawl zó maar af.

There was only 1 solution. I did find it terribly difficult to overdye the yarn, a fine yarn somebody had already dyed. But it was the only option, IMHO. The purple became Midnight blue and the skein of lichtblue became a deep yellow. And then, the shawl was done in no time!

Nu heeft het een WOW factor. NIet alleen in kleur, maar ook in maat. Maar liefst 3 meter 25cm! Van begin tot eind. Tjonge.
Ik heb Debbie van Skein Queen een bericht gestuurd dat ik haar garen heb gebruikt voor een ontwerp én dat ik het over geverfd heb. Dat is niet iets wat ik snel zal doen. SORRY Debbie.

NOW it has a WOW factor. Not only in colour, but also in size. Ten feet, 10 inches. Amazing.

I did send Debbie a note, telling her I used her yarn for a design and dyed it. My sincere apologies to her. It is not something I normally do. But in this case, it worked. SORRY.

Time Flies

De tijd vliegt voorbij!

Er zijn alweer nieuwe projecten van de naalden afgekomen, zonder dat er nog een blog over is geschreven! 

Zo heeft "Weide" het daglicht gezien! Een sikkelvormige shawl die versierd wordt met een bloem en schaap patroon in nupps. De rand wordt prachtig gevormd door het kant zo in te breien dat het op golvend water lijkt. 

Time flies!
In the past months, new project came of the needles and I didn't even write about them!

"Weide" was released. A crescent shaped shawl with flowers and sheep pattern in nupps. The edge is worked in such a beautiful lace pattern that reflects the stitches as if they were waves in the water. 

Je kunt hem precies uit 1 streng Glitter Kant van Atelier 't Wolbeest breien (800m/100gr). Ze verft hele mooie kleuren waardoor deze shawl lekker opvalt boven je winterjas of zometeen in de zomer!

It's a 1 skein shawl, you can knit it with a medium laceweight yarn (876y/100gr). This was knitted with Glitter Lace by Het Wolbeest. She dyes beautiful colours, that will look very attractive on a wintercoat or later next year in summer!

Bijna alle rijen zijn uitgeschreven, behalve voor de 2 grotere charts. In dit patroon worden ~106 nupps gebreid. Er zijn instructies die beschrijven hoe je ze maakt. Mocht je ze nog nooit gebreid hebben, dan kan het handig zijn om dit te oefenen.
  

Sterling

Soms, soms hoeft het niet zo moeilijk. Soms krijg je een doos met garen en dan ga je zitten en gebeurt het gewoon. De kleur. Het gevoel. En het juiste moment.

Lotus Yarns Silky Cashmere. De naam zegt het al... Zacht met glans...

Sometimes, sometimes it doesn't have to be that difficult. Sometimes you get a box of yarn and you sit down and it just happens. The colour. The feel. And excellent timing.

Het enige wat het nodig heeft is tijd. En voor je het weet heb je een lange mooie zachte glanzende shawl van (net) meer dan 2meter! Het patroon is zelfs zo, dat de uiteindes bijna gelijk zijn en je hem in 1x kunt breien.
Dan rest er niets meer dan alles lekker om je heen te slaan en te genieten!

The only thing it needs is time. And before you know it you have 80" of luscious soft and shiny shawl. It is even designed so that both ends look very similar. No grafting needed!
Then it is time to wrap all that around you and enjoying every second of it.

Blocking lace / Kant opspannen

Stel je hebt net een prachtige shawl met kantpatronen gebreid, hij is eindelijk af en ligt als een onduidelijk wolkje in je handen.
Say you've knitted a beautiful shawl with lace patterns, it's finally done and it's like an undefined cloud in your hands.

 Je wast hem voorzichtig met een wasmiddel dat geschikt is voor het garen wat je gebruikt hebt. Er zijn een paar 'regels': gewoon in het water laten liggen, niet te lang (kwartiertje, half uur) en niet te veel bewegen. Het water is handwarm of iets warmer.

 You wash the shawl very caryfully with a detergent that is suitable for the yarn you've used. There are still some 'rules' ; leave it in the water, don't stirr too much and don't leave it in the water too long (15-30minutes). The water is luke warm or a bit warmer.

 Haal het uit het water en laat het uitdruppen in je handen. NIET WRINGEN! Leg voorzichtig in een handdoek en druk het water er uit.
Take your shawl out of the water carefully and let it drip out excess water in your hands. DO NOT WRING! Lay out with care on a towel and press out the water.

 Leg je shawl uit op het bed, matras of schuim waar je de shawl gaat opspannen. Zorg er voor dat je de shawl NOOIT aan de punten vasthoud. Het garen zou kunnen knappen. Ondersteun altijd wanneer je de shawl over grote stukken moet verplaatsen.
Lay out your shawl on a bed, matras or foam on which you're going to pin the shawl down. Be aware NOT EVER to hold the shawl by the corners or single points. The yarn could snap due to the weight. Support the shawl when you're moving it over a large section.

 Pak de lussen op met een block draad of brei naald. Je kunt ook de punten pakken. Pak NIET de laatste lus, maar altijd een setje waar een opening is. Het garen kan knappen (zelfs zijde!) als je maar 1 lusje pakt.
Kun je maar 1 lus pakken, span dan eerst los op en trek later de shawl 'strak'.

 Pick up loops on the sides of the shawl or pick up the points. NEVER take just one loop, the yarn will snap when you block it (too) hard. If possible, pick up a set of stitches or in a yarn over. Or, when you only have loops, pick up the loops and stretch out. You can adjust tension later.

 Dit is een driehoek swatch dus ik kon de bovenste lussen in een keer oppakken. Anders begin je op de hoekpunten en dan werk je iedere keer naar het midden van de shawl. Halveer telkens het stuk waar je mee bezig bent.

 This is a triangular swatch and I was able to pick up all loops at once. Otherwise start at the corners and work your way to the centre. Devide the length you're blocking continuesly.

Door de kantsteken die je gebruikt hebt, komen ze nu écht op elkaar te liggen en de omslagen komen mooi open te staan. Het katnt komt tot leven.
By using the lace stitches, they really lay on top of eachother after blocking. Yarn overs pop open and make the lace come alive.

 Dan ziet het er uiteindelijk zo uit. Netjes en niet te strak.

In the end it will look like this, not to tight but all stitches are clearly visible.

het is weer eens zover... / whoop there it is...

Ben je lekker aan het breien... Af en toe het werk even aaien, alleen al omdat het zo mooi is, zo'n prachtige kleur heeft en vooral erg groot wordt...
En dan, terwijl je denkt dat alles klopt, zie je het in eens... Een fout. Een héle dikke fout.
Het patroon gaat in eens links af, terwijl het gewoon recht door moet!

Oh ja. Het garen. Kidsilk natuurlijk.. Zucht. You're having fun knitting a project, and everything is coming along nicely. The shawl is getting bigger and bigger, the colour of the yarn is gorgeous, and every now and then you just pet it because it feels so nice.
Still thinking everything is fine, you pet and see... A flaw. A big flaw. The pattern took a left turn, while it should be going forward...

Oh, and guess the yarn.
Kidsilk. Ofcourse.
8 pennen uithalen is een optie, weet je nog???, maar daar is geen tijd voor. Dus, heel voorzichtig pluk ik het garen los over 10 steken. Zie foto hierboven. Na 2 verwoede pogingen is het niet gelukt om het weer goed te krijgen. Waarom lubbert het zo. Ik kwam geen steken te kort, ze gingen alleen de verkeerde kant op...
Bij poging 3 het werk neer gelegd op een wit papier en zorgvuldig opgebouwd.

Frogging 8 rows in this yarn can be done, remember?, but there is no time for that. So, very carefully plucked the yarn loose over 10 stitches. See the picture above. After two fruitless attempts it looked really weird. Why is it so saggy? I had no shortage of stitches, they just went in the wrong direction.
At attempt 3 I layed down the knitting on a white piece of papier and reknit the whole thing.
Alleen nog de rand te gaan, dan is ie klaar. Wel blijven opletten! hahaha.

Only the edging to go, then it will be done. Have to pay more attention! hahaha

Damask

Ik mocht weer een shawl breien die naar Amerika gaat. Het project zou de Damask worden, het liet op zich wachten tot het juiste garen en kleur gevonden was. Dat duurde even, maar uiteindelijk werd het 100% pure zijde. Het was erg dun (2/80 NM) maar dat is door de leverancier opgewonden tot een 7 ply cone.

I was commissioned a shawl to be knit that would end up in the United States. The assignment was the Damask shawl, but it took a while before the right yarn and colour was found. The decision fell on the 100% pure silk, awefully thin with 2/80 NM but the supplier wound it into a 7 ply cone.
Eerst een swatch gemaakt; van onder naar boven: 4,0 mm / 3,75 mm en 3,5 mm. Omdat het zijde is, niet getwist garen en er nupps in komen waren sommige onderdelen best lastig breien. Een hele kunst om alle 7x7 draadjes mee te krijgen om een nuppje te breien. Gelukkig zaten er niet zo veel nupps in deze shawl.

First I made a swatch; from bottom to top: US6, US5 and US4. Because the silk hasn't got any stretch, is not twisted and there were nupps to be knit I had to swatch first. It was quite a task to pick up all 7x7 threads to make a nupp. Luckily there weren't that many.

Dit is een close-up. Prachtig reliëf in de shawl, een afwisseling van recht en averechte steken, nupps en oogjes. Oh ja, de shawl wordt van onder naar boven gebreid, en omdat ik een naald maat gezakt was vergeleken met het origineel, heb ik besloten om de grootste versie te breien.

This is a close up. Wonderfull dimensions in the shawl, the interaction between knit and purl stitches, nupps and eyelets. Oh, the shawl is knitted from bottom to the top, and because I had downsized the needlesize, I made up for it by knitting the Large.

Blocked.

Kijk eens wat mooi! Hij valt prachtig! Ik was al verliefd geworden op haar shawl, dus ik was erg blij dat ik dit patroon een keer mocht proberen.

Look how beautiful! It drapes só nice. I already fell in love with her shawl, so I was very happy to try out this pattern.

Ik ben er zeker van dat de nieuwe eigenaresse erg blij met deze Damask zal zijn. Hij is onderweg!

All over the place

Zoals jullie misschien wel kunnen begrijpen gaat het hier een beetje op en neer. Drukke tijden met veel geregel en rustige tijden waarop je lekker in kan storten.
Zo gaat het met het breien ook. Schreef ik een paar dagen geleden nog enthousiast over de ColourMart Spring Contest 2011 en mijn Lerwick Lace, hij ligt nu al dagen in een stil hoekje. Ik heb het middenpaneel al wel afgekregen, en ben al begonnen met de 2e rand... tot ik afgeleid werd.

As you might be able to understand, things are going up and down in our house. Busy times with lots of appointments, telephonecalls, arrangements and stuff, and quieter times where you can crash.
That how it's going with the knitting too. Did I write about the ColourMart Spring Contest a few days ago, and my Lerwick Lace shawl? It's in a lonely corner of the couch right now for days. I did finish the centerpanel already (extra lacy) and started the second edging.. that is untill I got distracted.
Zo heb ik dit garen speciaal laten verven. Ik zag het op Etsy maar het was in sokkengewicht. Dus overleg gepleegd met de shop-owner en ze heeft het voor mij op kantgewicht geverfd. In het echt is het nog iets meer olijfkleurig. Samen 1 streng van ruim 1200 meter.
I had this yarn specially dyed for myself. I had spotted it on Etsy, but it was in fingering. So convo-ed with the shopowner and she dyed it for me in laceweight. In reality it is a bit more olive coloured. Together they make a 1300 y skein.
Vorig jaar heb ik het ontwerp gemaakt; Little Apples. En wonder boven wonder; mensen vinden het leuk en er is zelfs al iemand die er 2 gebreid heeft! Ik had op de Breidag van haar en haar een prachtige bol écht Estlands garen gekregen; ideaal voor een echt estlands patroon en een mogelijkheid om mijn eigen ontwerp te promoten. Dus ook meteen maar begonnen.
Last year I made a design; Little Apples. And low and behold, people like it and there is even someone who has already knitted 2 shawls with my design. On the Breidag I was gifted a ball by her and her of original Estonian yarn, perfect for a original estonian pattern and a chance to promote my own design.
Van de week zag ik op Ravelry dat ik deze shawl nog niet in hibernation had gezet, en ik vroeg mezelf af waarom niet. Ik had er al heel lang niet aan gewerkt. Zo als hier boven zag het er vorige week nog uit, hier onder zoals het er gister uit zag. Het is de Spring Shawl, ik heb dus nog een héle lange weg te gaan.

Last week on Ravelry, I noticed I hadn't put this shawl in Hibernation yet. I was wondering why because I hadn't worked on it for a long time. The picture above is how it looked last week, and picture below is how it looks now. It is the Spring Shawl so I still have a lóng way to go.
Er staan ook nog een paar opdrachten aan te komen, een paar lange dagen met Chris in het ziekenhuis; dus geen idee hoe dit verder gaat.
Of is dit nu wat ze noemen 'wild breien' ....

I also have a few commissions coming in, a couple of long days with Chris in the hospital, so I have no idea how this will continue.
Or.. is this what they mean by 'wild knitting'...

Moe

Moe. Dat ben ik. Voor de breidagen en na de breidagen kwam er nix uit m'n handen; alle tijd gaat op aan kindjes verzorgen, huishouden, internet en slapen. Het enige wat ik heb gemaakt zijn maar liefst 2 proeflapjes en een nieuwsbrief (2) voor Kantwerk. Dat is alles. Vind ik eigenlijk niet zo leuk, want breien is ook ontspanning voor mij. Met Chris gaat het best goed; hij eet goed, is niet vaak misselijk (gelukkig maar!) en is vorige week zelfs een paar dagen naar school geweest. Er zijn ook minder leuke dingen; z'n haar was zo aan het uitvallen, dat hij er eergister genoeg van had. De tondeuse kwam er aan te pas en nu heeft hij korte stekeltjes. Dat lijkt meteen anders, ik was ook flink aan het bibberen, toen ik bezig was. Dus helemaal netjes is het niet geworden. Hij had van ons al een nieuwe baseball cap gekregen; deze keer een zwarte. Chris' klas heeft deze week voor het laatst les; vrijdag gaan ze nog op schoolreisje naar Duitsland en daarna beginnen de examens. Het is jammer maar hij kan niet mee. Wanneer je bezig bent met chemo, is het onverstandig om met openbaar vervoer te gaan (of uren met je klas in de bus naar Warner Bros Movie World)... Donderdag heeft Chris de laatste etappe van het eerste blok chemo, dus ik hoop dat hij dinsdag of woensdag nog 1 keertje naar school kan; tussen z'n vrienden in de klas, voordat alles veranderd. I'm tired. Very tired. Before and after the craftfair I got hardly any knitting done. And that is not so much fun; knitting is supposed to be relaxing. The only things I did were 2 swatches and a newsletter for Kantwerk. All of my time went into taking care of the kids, doing the housekeeping and internetting or sleeping. Chris is doing reasonably fine. He's still eating, not feeling sick at all, but he is losing his hair. So much so, that he decided that it had to come off. It's pretty daunting, picking up long hair from his head without hurting him at all. He got a new baseball cap from us, a black one this time. Things are a bit hard for him; at his school the exams are starting next week. Coming friday they're all going on a school trip, and he cannot come along. When you do chemo, you can't take public transport OR go in the bus for hours to Germany. So we will try to get him to school this tuesday or wednesday so he can be with his mates one more time before everthing changes. He will be having the last dose of chemo for this month thursday, then April 21 he will be starting the second month.

De garens op de plaatjes zijn van ColourMart. Aanstaande vrijdag begint weer een nieuwe ColourMart Contest, Spring 2011. Vorig jaar 2 prijzen gewonnen (Fall 2010, 2e en 1e prijs) dus ik móet wat bedenken. Kan niet zó maar met iets aankomen. Het bruine garen (Cash/Cotton) wordt samen met geel een nieuw jurkje voor Bridget, en het groene zou een nieuwe shawl moeten worden...

The yarns on the pics are ofcourse from ColourMart. This coming friday a new Contest starts; ColourMart Spring 2011. Last year I have won 2 prizes, so I cannot come with just anything. (I had won second and later first prize in the Fall Competition 2010). The brown will be added with last years won yellow (cash/cotton) to become a dress for Bridget and the green should become a new shawl...
