het is hier al erg lang akelig rustig.
De dagen vliegen voorbij, jongste kind haalde haar diploma, zoon 1 zit bij de marine en zoon 2 is inmiddels vader van ons eerste kleinkind.


Natuurlijk brei ik gewoon door!
Helaas is er niet veel belangstelling (meer) voor Kantwerk lessen of workshops. Dat kan komen omdat de blog is verwaarloosd, maar ik vermoed dat er vele nieuwe breitechnieken worden aangeboden die ook erg interessant zijn. Zoals Brioche in 2 kleuren.

 Hello Knitter!

It's been a long time since my last post. Days flew by, our youngest child graduated from her school, our eldest is in the Navy now and our youngest son became a father. We're proud grandparents!

Of course, knitting continues. Workshops aren't booked anymore. It could be because this blog was neglected (by me) or, more likely, other knitting techniques are quite interesting too! Like two colour Brioche. 

Ondertussen heb ik mijn dunste shawl ooit gebreid! Een tweede kans voor Blyde (Link) met Fine Gossamer Cashmere van Heirloom Knitting. (LINK)


En... ik maak video's over Kantbreien! Ik heb mijn camera angst overwonnen (dat is tenminste 1 die ik kan afstrepen) en vertel honderd uit over hoe je Kant Breit.
Het is net niet hetzelfde als een workshop, daar krijg je ook kleine praktische tips, maar toch best handig. Het is wel in het Engels. En dat komt, omdat de Facebook groep zo enthousiast is en dat werkt aanstekelijk. (Link naar groep)

And.. I make video's about Fine lace! I have stepped over my fear of being filmed /camera (one fear less, many to go). I am very chatty to talk about Lace (unscripted). It's not the same as a workshop, there are a bit less practical tips here) but still very educational. It is in English, because the Facebook Group on Fine Shetland Lace... is growing rapidly! That makes me very happy!

A FINE KNIT! 

Minogame

 Al in 2015 ben ik begonnen met het verzamelen van tattoo's. Ik heb gekozen voor een set in japanse stijl: Aarde, Water, Lucht en Vuur. Ik begon op mijn verjaardag met Water. Gelukkig zit er een hele goede artiest bij ons op het dorp. Bas is mijn vaste tattoo-zetter. Mooie fijne lijnen.
In 2016 kwam er een vogeltje bij, een goudvink, voor Lucht. Maar ik raakte een beetje in de problemen want Vuur is niet gemakkelijk om in een acceptabel formaat te vangen. En Aarde... tja.
Ik viel als een blok voor een... schildpad. Soms voel ik mezelf als een schildpad. Niet al te snel, hard van buiten, zacht van binnen, lekker in de zee maar ook kunnen leven op het strand.
Toen ik begon met het zoeken naar schildpadden, kwam ik uit bij de Legende van de Minogame, een mythische schildpad. Je kunt er over lezen, in het engels, in de link onderaan deze post.

Way back in 2015, I started collecting tattoos. I chose an japanese themed set: Earth, Fire, Water and Air. I got my first on my birthday: Water. I'm lucky to have a very good tattoo-artist right here in our village. Bas Kahle can draw the finest lines! In the summer of 2016 I got a little bird, a bull finch on a branch. But, then I ran in a bit of trouble. Fire and Earth are not very easy to put in a acceptable size.
Then, I fell hard for... a turtle. Sometimes I feel a bit like a turtle; not so fast, hard on the outside and soft on the inside. Very comfortable in the sea but also able to live on land. When I started searching I found the Legend of Minogame. A mythical turtle. A link with the legend, at the end of this post.

Omdat ik eigenlijk maar 1 tattoo per jaar mag, tegen die tijd ben ik vergeten dat het best wel pijn doet, kon ik de schildpad als inspiratie gebruiken, terwijl de afspraak nog maanden op zich zou laten wachten. Ik zou de Hexagonnen gaan gebruiken als basis voor het ontwerp. 

Because I can only have 1 tattoo a year, because by that time I will have forgotten that it does hurt quite a bit, I was able to use that idea as inspiration for a new design. The Hexagons on the shell of the turtle would form the base of the design. 

En toen kreeg ik de kans om voor dit ontwerp een heel erg mooi én zacht garen te gebruiken; KOKON Yarn. (lace)
Een weldadige draad gemaakt met (baby) Alpaca vezels. En helemaal in mijn kleur! Wow.
Eerst natuurlijk een proeflapje maken, kijken of het patroon goed uitkomt, de maat klopt en of de shawl zo wel lang genoeg wordt. 
Er zit 800m op een streng en het zou zonde zijn als je heel veel over zou houden of juist te kort zou komen. 
 Ik heb even een ander garen gebruikt voor het proeflapje, maar het effect was hetzelfde! Dus, meteen opzetten en gáán!

A lucious yarn made with (baby) Alpaca fibers. And totally my colour! WOW.
First, a swatch, to see if the patterns work, if the size is good and if the shawl will be long enough.
One skein has 800m and it would not be acceptable to run short or be left with a lot. 
I used a different yarn for the swatch but the pattern worked! So, casted on and Go!

Klaar!!! Done!!! 

Precies goed. Breed genoeg, lang genoeg en erg mooi! Dit is de "Cloud" kleur, maar er zijn andere als je deze niet mooi vind. Je kunt kiezen uit 12 semi solids, 4 verlopende garens en 4 met een gevarieerd kleur verloop! Er zit vast iets voor je bij. Wil je hem in het echt zien? Dat kan, oa, op 24 maart bij Ja Wol in Rotterdam! Dan ben ik er ook!

Just right! Wide enough, long enough and very pretty! This version is made in the "Cloud" colour, but there are plenty of other colours to choose from: 12 semi solid colours, 4 gradiënt and 4 variegated ones.

Welkom in het nieuwe jaar! Het oude jaar is al afgesloten maar ik was er nog niet aan toegekomen om te bloggen over het laatste ontwerp van 2017! 

Welcome in the new year! The old year has come and gone, but I wasn't ready to blog about the last design of 2017! 

In augustus was ik in de winkel van... Stephen en Penelope in Amsterdam. Ik viel als een blok voor de Madeline Tosh Prairie in een lichtblauw en blauwgrijze streng.

I was in Amsterdam in August to visit the store of Stephen & Penelope. I fell hard for the Madeline Tosh Prairie in a light blue and a bluegrey.

Er zijn veel dingen bekend van Amsterdam: drugs,  grachten plus tulpen zijn toch wel het beste bekend bij het grote publiek.

There are a lot of things Amsterdam is known for: drugs, moats and tulips are the most famous! 

Dus koos ik voor het water. Ik begon met een punt van een paar steken, naar een stuk met  12 herhalingen. Het zijn geen echte kabels, maar 'Twisted Stitches". Je kunt dit deel dus breien zonder kabel naald. 

So, I chose for water. I started with a point of a few stitches to a piece with 12 repeats. These aren't real cables, but "Twisted Stitches". You can knit this part without a cable needle. 

En de bloemen worden dan meteen aan de zijkant gebreid! Geen gedoe met het opnemen van steken. Meteen door! Dat scheelt. Je begint weer met een paar steken en breit de bloemen tot je geen 'water' meer over hebt.

Then, the flowers are worked immediately to the side of the water. No fuss with picking up stitches. You can go, go, go! This part also starts with a few stitches and you can knit flowers until there is no more "Water" left. 

Dus... Fijn breien!

Het heeft even geduurd, maar dan heb je ook wat. Ruim een jaar geleden was ik aan het spelen met een patroontje. 
De Outlander shawl was net klaar en ik had wat ideetjes waar ik misschien wel wat mee kon. 
Dus wat proeflapjes gemaakt met verschillende garens, chart geknipt en geplakt. 
Het probleem was alleen de vorm. Het is een patroon met veel mogelijkheden, maar ik kon maar geen vorm vinden, waarin het het beste tot zijn recht kwam.

It has been a while, but it was worth it. Over a year ago, I was just finishing up the Outlander shawl, some ideas popped in my head. I made swatches in several yarns, cutting and pasting in charts was easier. But the shape gave me some difficulties. The basic pattern could be used in several ways, but a suitable one was hard to find.

 

Wat ik dan altijd even doe, even op Ravelry kijken wat ik allemaal al gedaan heb, en wat er nog ontbreekt. Ik had nog geen shawl met een Faroese vorm. Hmmmm, dat was een goede keus.
In het midden de mooie diamant en variaties aan de zijkant.
De keuze voor het garen was daarna natuurlijk ook niet zo moeilijk. Een volle 2ply van Shetland wol. Een kleur die zorgt dat het patroon heel mooi uit komt en nu nog de details.

Didn't see a faroese shape yet. Hmmmm, that could be a great choice.  
The diamonds in the centre and some variations on either side!
Yarn choice wasn't so hard after that decision. A full 2ply shetland wool and a colour that would make the patterns pop!

 Je breit de shawl van boven naar beneden, en wanneer je afkant, is het ook klaar. Alleen nog opspannen en draadjes wegwerken. En dragen natuurlijk. 

Omdat Monique Dreef de opdrachtgeefster was en het garen leverde, en omdat we samen naar Shetland zijn geweest, leek het mij een tof idee om elkaar te ontmoeten, werkoverleg noemen we dat. 
Ik houd erg van de zee en op het strand van Callantsoog begin ik me aardig thuis te voelen. Ik rijd er 'zo' even heen op de motor, voetjes in het zand, ogen op de horizon. Mijn 'thuis' als ik niet thuis ben.
Hjemme is het Deense woord voor "thuis".

 The shawl is worked Top-Down and when you bind off, the shawl is actually done. Just blocking and weaving in ends. And then wear it! 
Because Monique Dreef was the commissioner of this design, and supplied the yarn, ánd because we went on a trip to Shetland last year, I thought it to be best to meet. Business meeting. Yes. 

I just lóve the sea and I'm starting to feel right at home at the beach of Callantsoog. I often go there when I ride my motorbike, feet in the sand, eyes on the horizon. My home away from home.
Hjemme is the Danish word for "Home".

 Na het werkoverleg met weer nieuwe ideeën, gingen we kijken voor een mooie lokatie om foto's te maken van de shawl. Het was lekker weer, motorpak uit, shawl om en...

After the workbit was done, creating new ideas, we went out to scout some lovely locations to make some pictures. So, the biker jacket and pants had to come off. It was a lovely day with some sunshine...

Om eerlijk te zijn, was ik zelf zo blij met het ontwerp, dat ik de volgende dag mijn (75%) zelfgesponnen garen heb gepakt en meteen nog een shawl heb gebreid!
De wol uit Wales, Hilltop Cloud, had 5 kleuren die ik heb gesponnen. Daarna heb ik het getwijnd met grijze 1ply gossamer Shetland wol van Jamieson & Smith (NL). En deze keer spande ik de shawl op met punten. Ook mooi! 

 To be honest, I was so happy with the design, the very next day, I picked up my own (75%) handspun yarn and casted on! The wool is from HilltopCloud from Wales, I plied it with a 1ply Gossamer Jamieson & Smith (UK) in grey. I blocked the shawl with points, also a beautiful option.

Nadat ik een workshop had gegeven in "Koperdraadje" te Alblasserdam, kreeg ik de mogelijkheid om een streng garen te kiezen voor een nieuw ontwerp. Lia, eigenaresse, woont in een molen in Kinderdijk en wilde wel graag dat als thema voor een shawl.
Tot mijn schande moet ik bekennen, omdat er geen deadline op dit ontwerp zat, dat ik er best wel lang over gedaan heb.

   

After I had given a workshop in the Local Yarn Store in Alblasserdam called: "Koperdraadje", I was offered a choice of colour in a very luscious yarn for a new design. Lia, the lady that runs the store, lives in a mill in Kinderdijk and would prefer that as a theme for the shawl. I'm ashamed to say it took my quite a while, with no deadline pushing me any further than I had too... 

 Ze wilde een sikkelvormige shawl en ik ging aan de slag. Het begin is vaak makkelijk, maar hoe zorg je er voor dat alles netjes op elkaar aansluit? Een molen patroon was niet zo makkelijk te bedenken en hoe past dat bij eventueel 'water' en 'grond'? Dus ging het in het begin wel een paar keer 'mis'.

She asked for a crescent shaped shawl, so I went to work. The set up is easy, but how to incorporate all that is asked for? "Water" and "Soil" and a 'mill' pattern. A few mistakes were made. 

 Tot ik me herinnerde dat ik in 2010 een keer een project was gestart maar nooit af had gemaakt. Dat leek wel op een molen! Uithalen wat ik had en kijken of ik het er in kon passen!

 Until I remembered I had knit a project in 2010 which I hadn't finished! That looked like a pinwheel! I frogged what I had so far and found a way to make it match with what I had so far.

Ik wilde enorm graag zelf een 'fan' / waaier patroon aan de rand. Het past zo mooi en geeft een heel ruimtelijk effect. Maar het neemt ook veel garen en het valt niet mee om het in een chart te zetten.
Na veel rekenwerk toch er in gegooid en huppekee!

I really wanted to have a fan-shape in the edge. It looks SOO good and it gives it an airy feel to it all. But, it also takes up a lot of yarn. Plus that it isn't so easy to chart. Oh well, with some calculations, I totally went for it!

Tijdens het opspannen bleek wel dat het niet een sikkelvormige shawl zou worden, maar een halve cirkel was ook erg mooi en het patroon komt prachtig tot zijn recht. 
 After setting up blocking the shawl (above) I was a bit surprised it wasn't as crescent as I had hoped. A full half circle will do just fine (too).

 Maar...
But...

Ik had verdacht veel garen over. Ik had het al bijna in de enveloppe gedaan, toen ik bedacht ik, dat ik er misschien ook wel handschoentjes van kon maken. Een set! Dat heb ik nog niet eerder gedaan.

 There was a lót of yarn left on the ball and I was about to send it back with the shawl. Then I thought, maybe I can design some matching mittens! That's a first! A set. 

 Ik heb hetzelfde 'molentje' gebruikt als in de shawl, het paste precies! En dus.. een shawl EN handschoentjes uit 1 bol. Yeah.

 I used the same pinwheel as in the shawl and it was a perfect fit. So, a shawl and matching mittens out of 1 skein of yarn! Yeah.

                   The mittens come in 1 size, but with adjusting the needlesize, you can make them fit.
                    The patterns allows for some stretch due to the lace pattern.

Soms, soms hoeft het niet zo moeilijk. Soms krijg je een doos met garen en dan ga je zitten en gebeurt het gewoon. De kleur. Het gevoel. En het juiste moment.

Lotus Yarns Silky Cashmere. De naam zegt het al... Zacht met glans...

Sometimes, sometimes it doesn't have to be that difficult. Sometimes you get a box of yarn and you sit down and it just happens. The colour. The feel. And excellent timing.

Het enige wat het nodig heeft is tijd. En voor je het weet heb je een lange mooie zachte glanzende shawl van (net) meer dan 2meter! Het patroon is zelfs zo, dat de uiteindes bijna gelijk zijn en je hem in 1x kunt breien.
Dan rest er niets meer dan alles lekker om je heen te slaan en te genieten!

The only thing it needs is time. And before you know it you have 80" of luscious soft and shiny shawl. It is even designed so that both ends look very similar. No grafting needed!
Then it is time to wrap all that around you and enjoying every second of it.
