Mrs. Miller en Missy Miller.

Nadat ik een workshop had gegeven in "Koperdraadje" te Alblasserdam, kreeg ik de mogelijkheid om een streng garen te kiezen voor een nieuw ontwerp. Lia, eigenaresse, woont in een molen in Kinderdijk en wilde wel graag dat als thema voor een shawl.
Tot mijn schande moet ik bekennen, omdat er geen deadline op dit ontwerp zat, dat ik er best wel lang over gedaan heb.

   

After I had given a workshop in the Local Yarn Store in Alblasserdam called: "Koperdraadje", I was offered a choice of colour in a very luscious yarn for a new design. Lia, the lady that runs the store, lives in a mill in Kinderdijk and would prefer that as a theme for the shawl. I'm ashamed to say it took my quite a while, with no deadline pushing me any further than I had too... 

 Ze wilde een sikkelvormige shawl en ik ging aan de slag. Het begin is vaak makkelijk, maar hoe zorg je er voor dat alles netjes op elkaar aansluit? Een molen patroon was niet zo makkelijk te bedenken en hoe past dat bij eventueel 'water' en 'grond'? Dus ging het in het begin wel een paar keer 'mis'.

She asked for a crescent shaped shawl, so I went to work. The set up is easy, but how to incorporate all that is asked for? "Water" and "Soil" and a 'mill' pattern. A few mistakes were made. 

 Tot ik me herinnerde dat ik in 2010 een keer een project was gestart maar nooit af had gemaakt. Dat leek wel op een molen! Uithalen wat ik had en kijken of ik het er in kon passen!

 Until I remembered I had knit a project in 2010 which I hadn't finished! That looked like a pinwheel! I frogged what I had so far and found a way to make it match with what I had so far.

Ik wilde enorm graag zelf een 'fan' / waaier patroon aan de rand. Het past zo mooi en geeft een heel ruimtelijk effect. Maar het neemt ook veel garen en het valt niet mee om het in een chart te zetten.
Na veel rekenwerk toch er in gegooid en huppekee!

I really wanted to have a fan-shape in the edge. It looks SOO good and it gives it an airy feel to it all. But, it also takes up a lot of yarn. Plus that it isn't so easy to chart. Oh well, with some calculations, I totally went for it!

Tijdens het opspannen bleek wel dat het niet een sikkelvormige shawl zou worden, maar een halve cirkel was ook erg mooi en het patroon komt prachtig tot zijn recht. 
 After setting up blocking the shawl (above) I was a bit surprised it wasn't as crescent as I had hoped. A full half circle will do just fine (too).

 Maar...
But...

Ik had verdacht veel garen over. Ik had het al bijna in de enveloppe gedaan, toen ik bedacht ik, dat ik er misschien ook wel handschoentjes van kon maken. Een set! Dat heb ik nog niet eerder gedaan.

 There was a lót of yarn left on the ball and I was about to send it back with the shawl. Then I thought, maybe I can design some matching mittens! That's a first! A set. 

 Ik heb hetzelfde 'molentje' gebruikt als in de shawl, het paste precies! En dus.. een shawl EN handschoentjes uit 1 bol. Yeah.

 I used the same pinwheel as in the shawl and it was a perfect fit. So, a shawl and matching mittens out of 1 skein of yarn! Yeah.

                   The mittens come in 1 size, but with adjusting the needlesize, you can make them fit.
                    The patterns allows for some stretch due to the lace pattern.

Holm, a summer lace scarf...

De dag dat ik wist dat het garen er aan zat te komen, was ik al met een ontwerp bezig. Het was afwachten of het patroon wat ik in gedachten had wel zou werken met het garen. Ik had nog nooit met Ramie gewerkt. 
Ramie is een een garen gemaakt van een plant uit de Netel-familie. Het heet wel hetzelfde als de brandnetel (Ortica of Urtica) maar het is toch net even wat anders. 

 The day I knew the yarn was coming, I was already working on a design. I had to wait and see if it would work with the yarn at all, I have never worked with Ramie yarn before.
Ramie is part of the Nettle-family. Not the famous 'weed', but a close relative. 

Het bleek een zeer aangename verrassing! Wat voelde dat goed, stevig en een heerlijk kleurtje. Het is een 1ply en een bolletje is 400m/50gr. Een goed kantgewicht dus.
Ik gokte er op dat het met 2,75mm naalden het beste er uit zou kunnen halen. Zo wordt het niet te los, zakt het niet uit (Shetland kant is al zo rekbaar).
De draad bleek stevig getwijnd te zijn, zonder dat het te strak is. Het voelt als wol en het is licht. Maar het heeft geen rek en het heeft een soort van zachte glans. Net als zijde!
Het is ook een NIEUW garen, heb ik gehoord. Van Borgo de' Pazzi. Toen ik het in wilde voeren, had Ravelry het er nog niet eens in staan! 

It turned out to be a pleasant surprise! It felt good, solid and it came in a great colour! It is a 1ply and a ball has 400m/50gr (or 437y / 50gr). So a good laceweight.
I thought a 2,75mm needle (US2) would work best; not too large and it wouldn't stretch too much (as Shetland often is very stretchy).
The yarn appeared to be well twisted without being too tight. Nice and crisp. It feels like wool and it is light. But it has no stretch to it and it has a little halo. Like Silk! 
It is also a brand (spanking) new yarn! By Borgo de' Pazzi. When I wanted to add it to Ravelry, I couldn't even find it. 

Het was een gok of ik genoeg kon breien aan lengte uit 1 bolletje. Na het eerste deel even te hebben opgespannen, kwam het op 30cm breedte. Dat leek me voldoende voor een zomer shawltje. Veel breder moest het ook niet worden.
En na 5 herhalingen was het garen bijna op! Er zat nog een beetje op maar niet genoeg voor nog een hele herhaling.
Lang leve het feit dat het Shetland kant is; de sjaal rekte op tot 150 cm! 

 It would still be a gamble to see how it would work with size. After the initial repeat it stretched out to 30cm / 12". That was good enough. It shouldn't be much wider for a summer scarf. After 5 repeats the yarn was almost gone. A little remained but not enough for another repeat.
And one of the bonusses of Shetland lace is the stretchy character! It stretched to 150cm or 59" long! Yeah. 

Het patroon is zo geschreven dat het makkelijk aan te passen is qua maat. Je kunt hem breder maken en natuurlijk langer. Neem zoveel bolletjes mee als je wilt! Er zijn ook heel veel kleuren! 

The pattern has been written with an option to make it wider or longer! You can choose from a lot of colours. Take as much balls as you like!

Kitten

Het is niet de eerste keer dat ik een ontwerp mag maken voor Zeven Katten: Link  
Altijd prachtige garens en kleuren en iedere keer weer een stimulans om aan wat nieuws te beginnen.
Nu had ik onlangs de Carajillo gemaakt in The Fibre Company "Road to China" lace.

Een werkelijk zeer luxueus garen in prachtige diepe tinten. Of ik daar een leuke shawl van kon maken voor ZevenKatten, omdat het net nieuw is in de collectie. Ik kreeg dit prachtige blauwe garen opgestuurd.

She always has the most gorgeous yarns and colours. Always a pleasure to work with her and to create something new.
Recently I had worked on the Carajillo with The Fibre Company "Road to China" lace.
Question: can you design a shawl with this yarn and this colour? Of course I can...

 Na een paar ideeën te hebben uitgewerkt, liet ik aan Niek een swatch zien. Ze vond het niet zo geschikt en had associaties met Space Invaders. Nix mis mee, maar niet voor dit geval. Maar het vormde wel een mooie basis voor het uiteindelijke ontwerp. De vorm stond al vast.
Kiss is een lange rechthoek, net als 9Levens. Een rondere vorm zou fijn zijn voor de collectie.

 After a few ideas and swatching, I presented Niek with a general idea of how it could end up. She didn't agree and thought it looked a bit too much like  Space Invader. Nothing wrong with that, but not for this design. It did form the base for the end result. The shape would be a crescent one, as previous designs were rectangle. A rounder shape would fit nicely in the collection.

Ik vond wel dat het ook tijd werd om wat 'nieuwe' technieken toe te passen. De meerderingen zijn zo standaard als het maar kan, om de ronde vorm te krijgen. Maar een iets andere manier om gaatjes te creeëren vond zijn plek in het begin van de rand. In dit blauwe garen zie je het misschien niet zo goed, maar met een lichter garen zie je het wat beter.

I thought it would be a good start to add some 'new' techniques. The shaping is as regular as they come with a crescent shape, but a different technique to make some holes into the 'fabric' would be refreshing. With a lighter yarn, you will see it better, but in this blue it still comes out well.

Met het gele draadje in de vorige foto's scheid je niet alleen de patroon delen maar ben je er ook zeker van dat alles tot daar toe goed zit. Zo'n lifeline helpt je, voor het geval dat het mis gaat. Je kunt het werk uithalen tot daar en met een dunnere naald de steken weer oppakken en verder gaan. Dat scheelt een hoop frustratie en ellende. Wanneer de shawl af is, haal je het draadje er gewoon uit.

With the yellow piece of yarn running through the stitches, you make sure your work is perfect. After each pattern repeat you pull a lifeline through life stitches on the needle. That way, if it all goes horribly wrong after that, you can frog the work gently and pick up all stitches with a finer gauge needle. And can continue working easy and quick. When the shawl is done, just pull out the yarn. Easy does it.

Het fijne is dat je maar 1 streng nodig hebt!
It's good to know you need only one skein of yarn!

Omdat de bedrijfsnaam ZevenKatten is, is het wel zo gepast om een kat gerelateerde naam te bedenken. De vormen in de rand lijken net op kattenogen en omdat het garen zo zacht is, dacht ik meteen aan "Kitten" (ook handig dat het in het engels hetzelfde is..)
En met averechte steken op de voorkant is het best een interessant patroon om te maken!

Because the company's name is ZevenKatten (SevenCats) the name should reflect at least something cat-like... The round shapes in the edge look a bit like cat eyes and because the yarn is so soft and cuddly, the word Kitten came to mind..
And with a bit of purling on the front, it is quite an interesting knit to work on.

In de vorige post kon je lezen dat er nogal wat vooraf kan gaan, voordat er eindelijk een definitief ontwerp tot stand komt.

En soms... is dat niet zo. Dan is de opdracht zo duidelijk, plus een beetje geluk met de geëiste onderdelen, en dan is een ontwerp 'zo maar'  klaar.

In the previous post, you could read about the development some designs. It can take a long time to work it all out and come to a final result.

And sometimes.... you don't have to work so hard. The brief is so clear and with a bit of added luck with the demands, a design can just roll of the needles.

En wanneer je dan ook nog met 100% zijde mag werken is dat geen straf. De vraag was of ik een shawl wilde ontwerpen met een thema; Zwartsluis. De opdrachtgeefster was van plan om een winkel te openen en een thema shawl zou dan best mooi zijn voor in de etalage. 

Er is veel water in de omgeving en het schild/vlag van Zwartsluis bood ook opties. (zie eerste foto!) 

And when you háve to work with 100% silk, you don't need to ask twice. The main point of the brief was that the shawl had to have a theme: Zwartsluis. The commissioner-lady was about to open up a yarn store there and a themed shawl would look very good in the shop window.

And there's lots of water nearby and the town's shield  gave me some options too. (First picture).

Dus ik had bedacht dat ik zou beginnen met het Schild: blokken in recht en averecht. Dan zou dat zachtjes overlopen in golven van 'water' en naar de 'oever' en riet/gras. Omdat de shawl rechthoekig zou worden, leek het me leuk om voor de verandering maar aan één lange zijde een kantrandje in te breien.

I thought it would be nice to start with the blocks of the shield in knit and purl blocks. That would transform into waves (water) and a bank (water edge) and grass/reed. Because I chose for a rectangled shape, I thought it would be nice to only add a lace edging on one long side of the shawl. 

Hier en daar een klein beetje aanpassen tijdens het breien, omdat hier ook het ontwerp weer iets groter was dan het garen toe liet (800m/100gr). Uiteindelijk een ontwerp wat prima is voor een beginnende kantbrei(st)er. Maar ook leuk voor alle andere kantbreisters. (foto onder: bijna klaar!). 

It needed a bit of tweeking during knitting because the yarn wouldn't allow all the ideas (875y/100gr)
In the end, it's a great project for beginners in lace knitting. But, even interesting for all other laceknitters, ofcourse. (picture above: not quite ready!).

 Door de zijde krijgt deze zacht lila / mauve tint een beetje extra glans en het draagt ook nog eens erg lekker. De shawl is van gemiddelde lengte (150cm) en je zou hem langer kunnen maken (extra streng garen!) door bijvoorbeeld bepaalde patroonblokken een keer extra te herhalen.

The silk gives this mauve a bit extra shine. The shawl is 59" long and if you want to, (extra yarn!) you can add more repeats of certain parts to add length.

 Soms krijg je op onverwachte momenten een onverwacht telefoontje. Het nummer op de telefoon gaf aan dat het uit Amsterdam kwam..... Zou het waar zijn?? Ja!!!

 Sometimes you get an unexpected phonecall at an unexpected time. The number on the phone stated it came from Amsterdam.... Really?? YES...

 De Afstap zal zeer binnenkort hun 40 jarig (!!!!) jubileum vieren en of ik een shawl wilde ontwerpen... JA! Natuurlijk. Binnen een week had ik een pakketje vol met Rowan Kidsilk 
Ik ging meteen aan het werk, ook al had ik nog de hele zomer. Gelukkig had ik al een idee met een patroon waar ik mee wilde werken.

 De Afstap will be celebrating their 40 year anniversary very soon and if there was a possibility that I could design a shawl with their favorite yarn. YES! Within the week I got a box full of Rowan Kidsilk. I got started rightaway eventhough I still had all summer. There was a pattern I had wanted to use and it turned out to be very fitting for this design.

 Na een paar weken stuurde ik de eerste foto's en ze vonden het wel erg mooi. Maar... Of ik ook het cijfer 40 er in kon verwerken. Het IS tenslotte een jubileum en 40 jaar voor een breiwinkel vind ik zelf ERG bijzonder...

 After a few weeks I send them some pictures of the first results and they were happy. But... they wanted to have the number 40 incorporated into the shawl. After all, it IS an anniversary shawl. And in my opinion 40 years is VERY remarkable for a yarn shop.

En dit is hem! 4T = four-tee = 40 = veertig!

In the end, it turned out right...

Soms, sóms heb je van die momenten. Een opdracht waar geen tijdsdruk op ligt, vervolgens dus blijft liggen en dan op het laatste moment er achter komen dat het véél meer werk is dan je had gedacht.
Arrogantie en te weinig ervaring.

Sometimes, occasionally you've gotten sloppy. An assignment that has no deadline, which means it has been laying around for ever and then as the deadlines is in clear sight, you realize it was a lót more work than you had anticipated.
Arrogance and not enough experience.

 Zo moet het er uit komen te zien; het groene vestje.

 This is the target, the little green cropped cardigan...

Eerst maar eens besloten om beide delen TEGELIJK op te zetten; dan was ik er het snelst vanaf mee klaar. Dat bleek uiteindelijk een goede keus. 

I decided to cast on for both parts at the same time, to be done with it quicker. In the end it proved to be a very good choice.

De mouwen. Dat viel nog niet mee! Er stonden best veel steken op de naald en voor je heen en weer bent... Maar het is wel vrolijk, al die frisse kleurtjes.

The sleeves. That was hard work! A lot of stitches on the needle and it took a long time to knit a row. It is very pretty in these bright colours.

Toch maar even geïnformeerd hoe lang de mouwen moesten worden. Ik kon een patroon inkorten en dan hup aan het werk voor het voor en achterpand. Dat was interessant; nu moest ik de delen splitsen. Op sommige stukken betekende dat, dat er 8 bollen wol aan hingen te bungelen om in patroon te kunnen blijven werken. Dat ben ik niet gewend!

First I had to inquire for the sleeve length, that meant I could omit one pattern and start right away with the front and back. Then it became more interesting as I had to separate the parts for the neck opening. Working the pattern it meant I had to use 8 balls of yarn; I'm NOT used to that!

Hé het lijkt er al op! Maar het is meer een losse flodder dan een prachtig vestje op een foto... Nu kwam de ellende; het eindeloos wegwerken van losse draadjes. Nu, met mijn shawls zijn dat er hoog uit 3 of 4... Kijk eens naar de kleurwisselingen! Ik zag er als een berg tegen op. Dat vertraagde het wel een beetje...



Yes, it's starting to look like the cardigan from the picture. It's a bit floppy.. Now for the hard part; weaving in all ends. Believe me, there were a lot! I'm not used to that either; knitting my shawls leaves me usually with 3 or 4 strands. It seriously slowed me down.

En uiteindelijk kwam het toch weer goed... Na een aangebreide boord aan de onderkant, gehaakte randen om de sluiting en de nek en een zacht zeepbadje mocht het vestje uitrusten op bed. Na dat het droog was, gewacht tot de zon scheen en gauw naar buiten en foto's maken!

In the end it turned out just right... After I've knitted an edging and crochet-ed the front and neckline, a soft soapy bath the cropped cardigan could take a little nap on the bed.
When it was dry and the sun came out, it was time for some pictures!

De nieuwe eigenaar is er reuze blij mee! Kijk maar...
The new owner is very happy with the result; look!
