De batt bestond uit: 50% merino, 40% faux cashmere en 10% Firestar.
De witte Shetland is 100% Shetland gossamer wol (fabrieksgaren). Ongeverfd.

 This is one (of the two so far) handspun skeins of yarn: Candy! I've spun ONE small minibatt from Spinjones (also an Etsyshop) and plied it with 100% Gossamer Shetland Wool to make a balanced yarn.
It is approx. 500m / 546y and the little skein weighs 61gr!

The batt was Yellow, Pink, Peppermint and Blue.

Brain Waves

Soms, soms gaat het niet altijd volgens de planning. Een ontwerp lag er al, maar de juiste vorm was nog best lastig om te vinden.
Ik wist al wel dat het een soort van driehoek zou worden. Ik mocht een workshop geven bij Ajoure in Joure en kreeg een beetje Yak garen om een voorbeeld mee te breien. Dat werkte erg lekker, maar het zat me niet helemaal lekker. Een driehoek beginnen is niet zo'n probleem, maar hoe dan verder?

 

 Sometimes things don't work out according to plan. A design was being worked on, but the right shape turned out to be a real problem. I imagned a triangular shape. I was giving a lace class in Joure (NL) and got send a bit of Yak yarn. Which was a delight to work with. But it kept on nagging me. Starting a triangle is not too difficult, but then what. 

Dus op een gegeven moment maar gewoon begonnen. Met werkelijk heerlijk garen van Skein Queen Finesse Nouveau. (800m/100gr)
En net zo lang doorgebreid tot ik al 82% van het garen had gebreid. Zonder enig idee te hebben hoe dit zou 'eindigen'.
Door het patroon maar aan een kant uit te breiden, was het eerste stuk al behoorlijk lang.

So, at some point I started knitting and used delicious yarn by Skein Qeen Finesse Nouveau. (875y/100gr)
I kept on knitting until 82% of the yarn had been used. And still no clue how to end this.
By only increasing on 1 side, the piece I had was already pretty long.

 Plotseling maakte het patroon zelf duidelijk welke kant het op moest gaan. In spiegelbeeld weer terug! Een parallellogram! Dat had ik nog nooit eerder gedaan. Dus, meteen een andere kleur uitgekozen om verder te gaan. Maar, op een of andere manier klopte het niet. Geen WOW factor. dus weer uitgehaald tot de paarse steken weer op de naald stonden.
Wat nu (weer)?

Suddenly, the work itself made clear what the solution was. Mirrored! A parallellogram!
I haven't knit that shape before. So, picked out a contrasting colour to continue. But, it didn't feel good. No WOW factor at all.
Ripped it back until the purple stitches were back on the needle.
Now what?

Er was maar 1 oplossing. Ik vond het wel ERG moeilijk. Het garen waar iemand anders al mee bezig is geweest, over verven. Maar uitelndelijk zag ik geen andere uitweg. Het paars werd diep blauw. En de streng lichtblauw werd okergeel. En toen was de shawl zó maar af.

There was only 1 solution. I did find it terribly difficult to overdye the yarn, a fine yarn somebody had already dyed. But it was the only option, IMHO. The purple became Midnight blue and the skein of lichtblue became a deep yellow. And then, the shawl was done in no time!

Nu heeft het een WOW factor. NIet alleen in kleur, maar ook in maat. Maar liefst 3 meter 25cm! Van begin tot eind. Tjonge.
Ik heb Debbie van Skein Queen een bericht gestuurd dat ik haar garen heb gebruikt voor een ontwerp én dat ik het over geverfd heb. Dat is niet iets wat ik snel zal doen. SORRY Debbie.

NOW it has a WOW factor. Not only in colour, but also in size. Ten feet, 10 inches. Amazing.

I did send Debbie a note, telling her I used her yarn for a design and dyed it. My sincere apologies to her. It is not something I normally do. But in this case, it worked. SORRY.

Komodo

Komodo.

Een Komodo varaan woont op een eiland in de Indische Oceaan dat bij Indonesië hoort. Ze hebben niet echt schubben of zien er uit als een fantasie draak. Het is echter wel een heel uniek dier. Ik vind het een prachtig dier om te zien, je kunt hem zelf bekijken in het Reptielen huis van Artis.

De vormpjes in deze shawl vond ik wel wat op 'schubben' lijken. 

 Komodo.

The Komodo 'dragon' is living on an island in the Indian Ocean, part of Indonesia. They don't really have a scaled skin or are like a fantasy dragon in real life. They are pretty unique though. I really like their 'look'. I've seen one (small) for real at the Zoo Artis in Amsterdam this Fall.

 De patronen kunnen worden geaccentueerd met kraaltjes. In het engelse garen van Posh Yarn heb ik gele kraaltjes gebruikt.

 The patterns in this design can be accentuated by small glass beads. In this case yellow to go with the Posh Yarn. (this colour is no longer available, but she has plenty to go around)..

 Het rode garen is heerlijk zachte lamswol, gewoon uit Nederland. Verkrijgbaar in vele kleuren maar in het rood toch wel erg mooi. Door de vorm van de shawl blijft hij goed zitten wanneer je hem draagt. Wel opletten, de binnen rand is een tikkie kwetsbaar.

The red yarn is wonderful soft lambswool from the Netherlands. Available in plenty of gorgeous colours, but very pretty in red. The shape of the design makes it very versatile to wear and it will stay put very easy. Please take note that the inner edging is a bit fragile.

Mocht je het patroon tijdens de Breidagen hebben gekocht, dan zitten er fouten in:
Er kunnen 881 kralen toegevoegd worden (8/0 maat)
In instructie 3 staat dat je de chart 2 drie keer moet herhalen. Dat klopt. 
Maar niet rij 48-83 drie keer herhalen. Dan heb je 258 steken, en niet 262 of 274.

Het spijt me als dit tot vertraging of problemen heeft geleid.

Aith

Al héél lang geleden is deze bijna onzichtbare shawl gebreid. Ik ben er ook erg lang mee bezig geweest om het allemaal op te schrijven en te breien... Maar aantekeningen maken nog geen patroon...

A lóng time ago, I've been knitting this almost invisible shawl. It took me a long time too to write it all down and knitting it. But pattern notes do not make a pattern...

In een van de nieuwsbrieven had ik al gemeld dat ik er mee bezig was, maar dat er telkens wat tussen kwam... Nu is het dan eindelijk afgekomen. En met anderhalve zonnestraal vanmiddag gauw nieuwe foto's gemaakt.

In one of my newsletters I mentioned I've been working on it and it got sidetracked due to other activities. Finally it all came together. And with some rare sunrays in this cold summer I managed to take some new pictures.

Aith. (formerly known as Shetland Sunset)

This shawl was knit before I even thought of going to Shetland. The yarn is so delicate and soft, I had to pay attention while knitting it. When the shawl was done, I decided I had to go to Shetland and see it (the island and 
the lace) for myself. I went October 2012. 
Aith is very small village on the island of Shetland. 
When I was there, I was merely passing on my way from Voe. I was struck by the remoteness of the location and the fact it was the only place where I saw birds and heard them singing. I stopped the car and listened to it. 
Back home, I realized I should have gone out of the car and experience the beauty surrounding me.
This shawl and Aith have something in common; if you don’t pay attention, you might miss it’s beauty.

Spring! ... Lente.

Na een lange sombere en uitgerekte winter was het best tijd voor wat vrolijks! Ik mocht weer een nieuw garen uit proberen en het patroon pastte er zó mooi bij; lente in aantocht.

After a long, dull and extended winter it was about time for something cheerful! I was to try out some new yarn and the pattern that came with it was very nice: spring was in the air.

(weird; blogger keeps turning my pictures left and right, sorry). 

Het patroon is Monkeys. Eenvoudig en misschien zelfs wat saai, maar met dit garen....

Hier zie je een beetje mijn onervarenheid met dit soort garen(s). Toen ik met een nieuwe bol begon, leek het garen door te lopen. Ik had echter niet de gaten dat ik 'halverwege' de kleurbaan was begonnen. Daardoor zitten net naast het midden 2 roze kleurbanen vlak bij elkaar. 

 In the overall picture my inexperience with these type of yarns is showing a bit. When I started with a new ball of yarn, the colours seemed to be flowing nicely. I hadn't checked how long the colour would run for... Therefor just next to the centre are 2 sets of pink very close to eachother.

Een prachtige combinatie / A wonderfull combination

Er is weer een shawl af. Het heeft wel héél lang geduurd voor hij af was! Vorig jaar ben ik al begonnen met het patroon te tekenen. Dat viel nog niet mee... Ik had alleen een foto.

There is another shawl done! This one took a very long time to get done. Last year I started with the charting of this shawl. That was pretty hard, as I only had a picture to go from..

 Ik heb al heel veel shawls online kunnen bekijken. Op de site van het Shetland Museum. De meeste originele shawls zijn 'directional'. Dat betekend dat het midden vaak maar in een richting gebreid wordt. Daarna wordt een nieuwe border gebreid en er aan gezet. Vervolgens komt dan de aangebreide rand.

I've seen a lot of shawls online, in the database of the site of the Shetland Museum. Most original shawls are knitted directional. The center has one pattern/set that is knitted in one direction only. Then a second border is knit and often grafted to the center. Then the edging is added.

 Ik had bèst veel werk om het border patroon uit te zoeken. Nabreien en uitproberen, opnieuw tekenen omdat het niet uit komt en opnieuw breien. Nog maar een keer naar de foto kijken. Nog een keer tellen. Nog een keer breien. Zo leek het middenstuk nog makkelijk! Maar dat was het ook niet. Geloof me, er zitten nog 'fouten' genoeg in...

I díd have a lot of work on the unraveling of the border pattern. Knitting it, watching if it looked like the picture at all, recharting, re knitting, adapting and trying again. Watching at the copy of the picture, knitting again, and counting a lot. That made the centerpart look easy! But that wasn't the case. Believe me, there are still plenty of 'fault's  in this one..

 Ik had al contact gehad met Bruce, om te vragen of ik de shawl na mocht breien, op Ravelry advies gevraagd wat een redelijk aantal herhalingen zou zijn voor het midden. Of ik de shawl mirrored of directional zou maken. En wat het dichtst bij het origineel zou komen. Want tenslotte had ik maar een halve foto.

In the meantime I had contacted Bruce, to ask if I was permitted to copy knit this shawl. I had asked on Ravelry what would be a reasonable amount of repeats in the center. Whether or not to mirror or directional knit the shawl. Just to come as close as possible to the original. After all, I only had half a picture of the shawl..

 Uiteindelijk is dit het meest dichtbij wat ik bij het origineel kan komen. De aanhechting van de rand ziet er iets anders uit. Ik vermoed dat ze de onderrand eerst heeft gebreid en de rand aan de lange kanten tegelijk met de shawl zelf. Het is mij niet gelukt om de rand met gaatjes/omslagen zo te krijgen.Vooral omdat ik al begonnen was met het breien van het midden. Maar hij lijkt best goed!

In the end this is the closest I could get to the original. The edging is a bit different. I suspect she knitted the edging first and then knitted shawl and both edgings on the long sides at the same time. I couldn't manage to get the rows of yarnovers/holes to match in the end. Mainly because I had already started with the center. But I came very close...

 Nu stuur ik de foto's naar Bruce met de vraag of ik toestemming kan krijgen van zijn tante, die het origineel heeft gebreid, om deze shawl te publiceren en het patroon te mogen verkopen.

Now I will send the pictures to Bruce, hoping to gain permission from his aunt, who knitted the original, to publish this shawl and sell the pattern.

Het garen is bíjna het zelfde als dat van de Shetland Sweetheart. Hier zit geen kameel in, maar angora. (met cashmere en merino). Daardoor is hij best kwetsbaar...
Ik heb gelukkig nog méér garen met kameel in precies dezelfde kleur...

The yarn is almost the same as of the Shetland Sweetheart. In this there is no camel, but angora. (with cashmere and merino). That makes it extra delicate...
Luckily have móre yarn (with camel in it) in the exact same colour...

Toen had ik me iets bedacht...
Ik heb heel veel uren naar shawls op internet gekeken. Ik wil ze eigenlijk nog liever in het echt zien!
Dus heb ik besloten van al het geld dat ik verdien met patronen, workshops en opdrachten mezelf naar de Shetland Eilanden toe wil breien!!! Ik hoop volgend jaar te gaan, wanneer ze (hopelijk) weer een Shetland Wool Week organiseren in oktober.

Then I thought of something...
I've spent many an hour on the net watching the shawls. I truly want to see them for real!
So, I decided to save my earnings of commissioned knits, pattern sales and workshops and work my way to the actual Shetland Isles! I hope to go next year, when they organize another Shetland Wool Week in October (not sure yet..)

Had ik een leven vóór Ravelry?? Ja.
Maar wat is er een wereld open gegaan voor mij op Ravelry. In eens een heleboel inspiratie, voorbeelden, potentiele projecten, garen leveranciers maar speciaal: heel veel vrienden.
Nu kan ik goed engels, dus ik chat mezelf de halve wereld over. Geweldig.
Iedereen is zó aardig, enthousiast, lief en attent, ze geven tips, suggesties, oplossingen en nieuwe impulsen. Did I have a life befóre Ravelry? Yes.
But..what a whole new world opened up for me on this amazing site. Lots of inspiration, new examples, inspiration for new projects, new yarn suppliers and the icing on the cake: FRIENDS.
I consider myself pretty good at english so I chat around the world. I lóve it! Everyone is so nice, shares and helps out, kind and is just plain nice.
I'm a sucker for attention, so I try to plant pictures on Ravelry as soon as a project has something to show. Except for this one. I've started it 4 times and frogged it because I was bored, wrong or just to occupied with something else. Due to the winter and snow I thought it would be time to knit up something bright. Nou wil ik natuurlijk graag aandacht en zet dus vaak vrij snel een projectfoto op Ravelry. Behalve bij dit project. Dat komt omdat ik er al 4x aan begonnen was en het ook elke keer weer uithaalde. Maar door het saaie winterweer en te veel sneeuw werd het tijd voor een zonnig project. Kralen erbij gezocht en voilá! Het wordt de Aeolian van Knitty. Ik zet dus doodleuk de foto bij de lijst van WIP's en krijg heel positieve reacties, waaronder een van Margot. Ze stuurde me vervolgens een verrassingspakket op met de meest prachtige dingen: knopen, knijpers, clipjes, stofjes die gebruikt worden in echte kimono's die handgeverfd zijn! Een heerlijk stuk chocola en een geurbuiltje. Het is ZO mooi!

This is the Aeolian from Knitty. I just added this picture on my projectlist and got several positive reactions including one of Margot. The next thing I know she has send me a surprise package with the móst amazing stuff: buttons, fabric which is originally used in Kimono's, chocolat (yummie), clips and lovely pegs, a sent cushion!
