Acanthus.

Vorig jaar oktober. Breidagen in Zwolle. Aan het einde van 2 hele leuke (nieuwe mensen en oude vrienden) en spannende dagen, kreeg ik van Paul (Colorways) een zakje met 4 strengen oranje garen. Hij had daarvoor al gevraagd of ik voor hem een shawl met dit (nieuwe) garen wilde ontwerpen.
Even overleg over de kleur, vrolijk, lente, (liefst even géén rood) en het werd: oranje. Dáár was ik aan toe.

Last year October. Breidag in Zwolle (Knit-day). At the end of 2 exciting and lovely days (meeting new people and old friends) Paul gave me a little bag with four skeins of orange yarn. If I was able to design a new shawl with this (new) yarn. We had debated about the color before hand and decided on the orange (rather not red again...). Spring would be in the air (well, almost) and I needed it.

Na de baret, wilde ik weer met een 'soort' van structuur werken. Averecht tegen over / naast recht en met kant er bij...
After knitting the Beret, I wanted to work with a sort of relief. Purling, knitting and lace right next to each other...

Maar het moest in de juiste vorm en dát wilde niet zo lukken. Het garen was prachtig en het breien zelf ging enorm goed. Maar het moest wel 'te doen' zijn... En er mooi uit zien!

It had to be put into the right shape, but that wasn't as easy as it looked. The yarn is wonderful and knitting was easy, but the pattern had to be readable and still look pretty.

Onderzoek wees uit (o.a. Komodo) dat een sikkel vormige shawl:
1. Goed blijft zitten tijdens het dragen.
2. Met effen stukken het garen mooi laat uitkomen, vooral omdat dit net niet helemaal effen is.
3. Je de kans krijgt om een verschrikkelijk mooie rand te maken.
4. Het nadeel is dat je nu enorm (ENORM) veel steken moet afkanten... (ongeveer 1034... of zo).
5. Het levert prachtige plaatjes op bij het fotograferen! (moet de zon wel schijnen, natuurlijk).

Research revealed (i.e. Komodo)  that a cresent shaped shawl:
1. Stays put while wearing.
2. Can show of the quality of the yarn in a very good way (parts with stockinette). Especially because it is slightly variegated.
3. You get the opportunity to make a unique and pretty edging.
4. The downside is you will be binding off a lot (REALLY A LOT) of stitches (about 1034... approx.)
5. You can make excellent pictures during the shoot! (If the sun shines, at all).

En dan mag je het eindelijk gaan breien!!! Zou het zo mooi worden als ik had bedacht?? Ik moest de charts zelfs nog inkorten omdat ik anders garen te kort zou komen. Maar het blad kwam precies af.

And then... Knitting time! Would it work out the way I had planned? I even had to shorten the chart, otherwise I would run out of yarn. But as you can see, the leaf was finished quite nicely.

Hij is niet te klein, niet te druk, het patroon is makkelijk te herhalen en duidelijk zichtbaar in het werk! Eigenlijk moest ik nog een keer het patroon breien om er zéker van te zijn dat het patroon zou kloppen. Dus...

Not too small, or too full with patterns. A reasonable easy repeat and clearly visible in the end result. I should knit another, just to make sure the pattern is correct... So...

Elke rij is uitgeschreven én staat in de chart. Het beste kun je ze tegelijk gebruiken: 5 charts, 6 pagina's.

Each row is written ánd charted. It's best to use both at the same time: 5 charts, 6 pages.

 Ik weet nog dat ik jaren geleden geïnteresseerd raakte in Shetland Lace. Ik heb toen als eerste de Shetland Tea Shawl gebreid. Ik had al ervaring met kantbreien op de verkeerde kant van het werk, maar toch was het niet zo eenvoudig als dat het eerst leek. 

 I remember fondly the time when I got interested in Shetland Lace. The Shetland Tea Shawl was the first project I knitted. I did have some experience with knitting patterns on the wrong side of the work, but this was a little bit different.

 Na een paar jaar en heel veel oefenen, begon ik met het geven van Workshops. Voor beginners en gevorderden. Voor de beginners had ik vaak dit patroon (NL, gratis!) om mee te werken en voor gevorderden gebruikte ik het diamant patroon van deze shawl (NL, niet gratis). En met die voorbeelden ging het eigenlijk best goed.

 After many years of hard work, I was able to give workshops. For beginners and experienced knitters. For beginners I often used this as the basic start, (ENG, free) and for the more experienced knitters I used this shawl pattern (ENG, not free). And with these shawls all went pretty well.

Totdat het tijd werd voor wat nieuws. Ik bedacht een proeflapje met een paar mogelijkheden. Die heb ik toen in de goede volgorde gezet, van makkelijk naar moeilijk. Breisters kregen vier patroontjes om mee te oefenen, leren hoe je aan 'de verkeerde kant' van het werk een patroontje in breit.

Until it was time for something new. I made a swatch with some options to choose from. I ordered them from easy to difficult. Knitters were offered 4 patterns to work with, to learn to knit patterns on the "wrong" side of the work.

 Jammer was alleen dat dáár geen eindresultaat was. Natuurlijk konden ze wel andere ontwerpen van Kantwerk maken waarin ook Shetland patronen in voor komen. Mooier zou zijn als er gewoon een hele shawl van kwam met nog meer oefeningen.. En zie hier.

It was a bit sad that there was no end result for this swatch. Ofcourse they could work on other design from A Passion For Lace, which have Shetland patterns in them. But how nice would it be if this was one design, with even more samples of Shetland lace. Here it is...

Ik heb 2 kleuren gebruikt om tijdens het breien duidelijk te houden wat de shawl steken zijn, en welke de rand steken. De rand wordt er later omheen gebreid.

I've used 2 colours for this design, to keep it more clear, what are the shawl stitches and what are the edging stitches. The edging is knitted onto the shawl.

En van het een komt het ander.
In een van mijn nieuwsbrieven had ik een foto serie geplaatst van de mutsen die ik tot nu toe gebreid heb.

One thing leads to another...
The other day I published all the hats I've knitted in my newsletter. (all designs by Kate Davies).

En het leuke was dat er iemand reageerde die een mooi tijdje geleden als een van de eerste klant was van Kantwerk! Of ik zo'n leuke muts ook voor haar kon breien! Maar liever niet in van dat kriebel garen..

The nice thing was that someone responded. The same person that was actually one of the first clients I've had with A Passion For Lace.

Dus eerst eens een swatch gemaakt ... / .... So I first made a swatch.

Om dit leuke polsbandje proeflapje te maken heb ik 100% Cashmere van ColourMart gebruikt (zwart, groen en paars) en de schaapjes zijn gebreid met Baa Ram Ewe "Titus" in 'White Rose'. (etsy NL)

To make this little wristlet swatch  it extra soft, I've used 100% (ColourMart) Cashmere for this one (Black and Purple and Green). The Sheep are made using Baa Ram Ewe "Titus" in 'White Rose'. (Original site).

 Eerst maar eens de garens uitgekozen. De "Titus" maar los gelaten en vervangen.
Alle 9 kleuren zijn van ColourMart met een lekker hoog percentage Cashmere. Vijf van de negen garens zijn meer dan de helft Cashmere. (de rest Merino en Zijde). Ik moest, omdat ik KANT brei en geen dikke garens op voorraad heb, alle draadjes dubbel, driedubbel en soms met z'n vieren op een bolletje draaien.

First I had to choose the yarn and colours. Lost the "Titus" and replaced it with another ColourMart yarn.

Quite a lot of Cashmere was involved; 5 out of 9 are more than 50% cashmere (other contents Merino and Silk).
I had to, because I'm a LACE knitter and don't have bulky yarn in my stash, wind the yarn into multiple stranded balls. The green even has 4 strands!

 

En toen maar beginnen! De schaapjes zijn zwart en diep paars en de oranje fleurt het lekker op!

And then I got started. The sheep are deep purple and black and the orange gives it a bit of sparkle.

Hij is een tikkie kleiner dan de eerste die ik gebreid had, maar hij is ZO lekker zacht. Veel plezier ermee!

It turned out to be a little bit smaller, but it's SO soft... Enjoy!

Taking shape

Het is nog maar een paar weken geleden dat ik blogde over mijn pogingen om te leren spinnen. Ik heb meegedaan met een #spinchat op twitter, erg leerzaam. Ik heb de kunst afgekeken op de spinavond in Leeuwarden en thuis flink geoefend. Ik moest en zou een dun regelmatig draadje spinnen. En ja hoor, het is echt zo. Oefenen helpt.

It's only a few weeks ago I blogged about my attempts wanting to learn how to spin yarn. I've joined the #spinchat on Twitter, very educational. I've watched the ladies on the SpinEvening in Leeuwarden and learned a few tricks. Then went home and practiced a lot. I really wanted to make a thin thread. And yes it's true; practice makes perfect!

Het lukt me zelfs een beetje om langere stukken zo dun te houden. Want in het begin was het chunky en cobweb binnen een paar meter. Het is wel spannend, wanneer hij ophoud met draaien en ik let niet op draait hij zo terug en knapt het draadje.

I even manage now to do this for a bit longer. In the beginning it was chunky and cobweb within a few yards. It's pretty exciting; when the spindle stops turning I have to pay attention before it starts to unwind again and snaps the yarn.

Ondertussen had ik besloten dat ik dit jaar niet meer nieuw garen mocht kopen. Ik heb genoeg, lijkt me (ong. 140km...)
Maar over spinnen is niets afgesproken (met mezelf). Van de week was er een Handwerk Winter markt in ons eigen dorp en daar was het niet alleen ongelooflijk druk, (positief!) maar ook erg interessant. Ik heb IJslandse lontwol gekocht en een kluitje geverfde zijde. 
Ik heb er nog niets mee gedaan, maar mooi is het wel!

In the meantime I had decided to go Cold Sheep (no more yarn this year). I've got plenty already (about 87 miles).
But for spinning nothing was agreed to (by myself). And just this week in my own village was a little Craft Winter Market. It was very busy with people (a good thing) and very interesting. I've bought Icelandic Roving and a bit of dyed Silk.
I haven't used it yet, but it sure is pretty!

Tijdens de #spinchat (op zondagavond rond 19:00) heb ik gevraagd hoe ik nou een 1ply kan maken. Blijkt dat je het garen een schokbad moet geven zodat het een beetje vilt. Ze noemen dat 'Vollen' (ik herhaal wat ik heb gehoord). Op ravelry werd dat bevestigd, dus dat heb ik gedaan met het plukje wat ik had. Van 8gr heb ik 53m gesponnen. En een schokbad gegeven. Twee keer leek me voldoende.

During the #spinchat (sundaynight 19:00 Local time A'dam) I asked if it was possible to make a 1ply thread. The answer was a shock treatment; hot bath, cold bath. They called it 'Fulling' which is a stage before felting. (i'm only repeating what I'm told..) Conformation on Ravelry made me do it twice. I had spun 57yards with 8gr of roving.

Mijn eerste handgesponnen swatch! Dat is een heerlijk gevoel. Het is een groot proeflapje, dat wel; 15x19cm op nld 3,5mm
My first knit HANDSPUN! That felt really good. It's Shetland roving, only fitting to knit up a (new pattern) Shetland design. This is only 2gr. Pretty big though; 6"x7" on US4.

Ik ga nog niet een héle shawl zelf spinnen, maar dit is een mooie belofte.

I'm not going to spin my own shawl, but this is a very pretty start.

Purple Breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze...

Ik mocht weer een shawl breien! En de opdrachtgeefster koos voor een van mijn eigen ontwerpen. Het leuke voor mij was dat ik altijd al met dit garen wilde werken en nu mocht het! Het is een lekkere paarse kleur en ik vond het prettig dat de draad niet getwijnd was. 

 I was given another commission to knit a shawl. She had chosen one of my own designs. The fun part for me was that I had been longing to use this yarn for a long time. It is Iris Purple and I really like it that the yarn isn't twined. (a single strand).

 Ik heb de shawl iets smaller gemaakt, ipv de 11 herhalingen in de breedte, heb ik maar 7 gebruikt. Hij is ook niet zo lang.

 I adapted the shawl by using only 7 of the 11 repeats (width) to make it more narrow. I also did less repeats lengthwise.

Een prachtige combinatie / A wonderfull combination

Er is weer een shawl af. Het heeft wel héél lang geduurd voor hij af was! Vorig jaar ben ik al begonnen met het patroon te tekenen. Dat viel nog niet mee... Ik had alleen een foto.

There is another shawl done! This one took a very long time to get done. Last year I started with the charting of this shawl. That was pretty hard, as I only had a picture to go from..

 Ik heb al heel veel shawls online kunnen bekijken. Op de site van het Shetland Museum. De meeste originele shawls zijn 'directional'. Dat betekend dat het midden vaak maar in een richting gebreid wordt. Daarna wordt een nieuwe border gebreid en er aan gezet. Vervolgens komt dan de aangebreide rand.

I've seen a lot of shawls online, in the database of the site of the Shetland Museum. Most original shawls are knitted directional. The center has one pattern/set that is knitted in one direction only. Then a second border is knit and often grafted to the center. Then the edging is added.

 Ik had bèst veel werk om het border patroon uit te zoeken. Nabreien en uitproberen, opnieuw tekenen omdat het niet uit komt en opnieuw breien. Nog maar een keer naar de foto kijken. Nog een keer tellen. Nog een keer breien. Zo leek het middenstuk nog makkelijk! Maar dat was het ook niet. Geloof me, er zitten nog 'fouten' genoeg in...

I díd have a lot of work on the unraveling of the border pattern. Knitting it, watching if it looked like the picture at all, recharting, re knitting, adapting and trying again. Watching at the copy of the picture, knitting again, and counting a lot. That made the centerpart look easy! But that wasn't the case. Believe me, there are still plenty of 'fault's  in this one..

 Ik had al contact gehad met Bruce, om te vragen of ik de shawl na mocht breien, op Ravelry advies gevraagd wat een redelijk aantal herhalingen zou zijn voor het midden. Of ik de shawl mirrored of directional zou maken. En wat het dichtst bij het origineel zou komen. Want tenslotte had ik maar een halve foto.

In the meantime I had contacted Bruce, to ask if I was permitted to copy knit this shawl. I had asked on Ravelry what would be a reasonable amount of repeats in the center. Whether or not to mirror or directional knit the shawl. Just to come as close as possible to the original. After all, I only had half a picture of the shawl..

 Uiteindelijk is dit het meest dichtbij wat ik bij het origineel kan komen. De aanhechting van de rand ziet er iets anders uit. Ik vermoed dat ze de onderrand eerst heeft gebreid en de rand aan de lange kanten tegelijk met de shawl zelf. Het is mij niet gelukt om de rand met gaatjes/omslagen zo te krijgen.Vooral omdat ik al begonnen was met het breien van het midden. Maar hij lijkt best goed!

In the end this is the closest I could get to the original. The edging is a bit different. I suspect she knitted the edging first and then knitted shawl and both edgings on the long sides at the same time. I couldn't manage to get the rows of yarnovers/holes to match in the end. Mainly because I had already started with the center. But I came very close...

 Nu stuur ik de foto's naar Bruce met de vraag of ik toestemming kan krijgen van zijn tante, die het origineel heeft gebreid, om deze shawl te publiceren en het patroon te mogen verkopen.

Now I will send the pictures to Bruce, hoping to gain permission from his aunt, who knitted the original, to publish this shawl and sell the pattern.

Het garen is bíjna het zelfde als dat van de Shetland Sweetheart. Hier zit geen kameel in, maar angora. (met cashmere en merino). Daardoor is hij best kwetsbaar...
Ik heb gelukkig nog méér garen met kameel in precies dezelfde kleur...

The yarn is almost the same as of the Shetland Sweetheart. In this there is no camel, but angora. (with cashmere and merino). That makes it extra delicate...
Luckily have móre yarn (with camel in it) in the exact same colour...

Toen had ik me iets bedacht...
Ik heb heel veel uren naar shawls op internet gekeken. Ik wil ze eigenlijk nog liever in het echt zien!
Dus heb ik besloten van al het geld dat ik verdien met patronen, workshops en opdrachten mezelf naar de Shetland Eilanden toe wil breien!!! Ik hoop volgend jaar te gaan, wanneer ze (hopelijk) weer een Shetland Wool Week organiseren in oktober.

Then I thought of something...
I've spent many an hour on the net watching the shawls. I truly want to see them for real!
So, I decided to save my earnings of commissioned knits, pattern sales and workshops and work my way to the actual Shetland Isles! I hope to go next year, when they organize another Shetland Wool Week in October (not sure yet..)

With this skein and the one below I'm going to knit the Shetland Lace Shawl (A Gathering of Lace). I've recharted the border pattern and put in some patterns from The Queen Susan Shawl.
The center pattern WILL NOT be knit with the Sage, the border and edging are knitted with the Slate Tonal. The yardage was a bit too thick, so I ordered another skein of Slate Tonal.
