Fit for a prince...

Ik vond deze foto op Google! Het prinsje in Engeland is geboren en wordt door zijn moeder gedragen in een (hand?) gebreide SHETLAND shawl!
Er hangt iets aan wat op een etiketje lijkt, maar de patronen zijn duidelijk herkenbaar.

I found this picture on Google! The little prince, third in line for the throne of England, is born and is carried by his mother in a (handknitted) SHETLAND knit shawl!
There seems to be sort of a tag on it, but the patterns are clearly visible.

Spring! ... Lente.

Na een lange sombere en uitgerekte winter was het best tijd voor wat vrolijks! Ik mocht weer een nieuw garen uit proberen en het patroon pastte er zó mooi bij; lente in aantocht.

After a long, dull and extended winter it was about time for something cheerful! I was to try out some new yarn and the pattern that came with it was very nice: spring was in the air.

(weird; blogger keeps turning my pictures left and right, sorry). 

Het patroon is Monkeys. Eenvoudig en misschien zelfs wat saai, maar met dit garen....

The pattern is Monkeys. Simple and maybe even a bit boring, but with this yarn....

Hier zie je een beetje mijn onervarenheid met dit soort garen(s). Toen ik met een nieuwe bol begon, leek het garen door te lopen. Ik had echter niet de gaten dat ik 'halverwege' de kleurbaan was begonnen. Daardoor zitten net naast het midden 2 roze kleurbanen vlak bij elkaar. 

 In the overall picture my inexperience with these type of yarns is showing a bit. When I started with a new ball of yarn, the colours seemed to be flowing nicely. I hadn't checked how long the colour would run for... Therefor just next to the centre are 2 sets of pink very close to eachother.

Yarn: Katia Jaipur 280m/50gr.
Needle: 3mm

St. Ninian's

On the very last day we were on Shetland, we visited Saint Ninian's Beach. It was on the way to the airport, a slight detour. But worth every minute of it. This beach is special because it's a tombolo. It's a sand bridge between 2 pieces of land/rock and the ocean meets the beach on 2 sides.

We were in luck, the sun was shining, it was windy, so lots of waves.

Halfway down, we spotted a seal. It was keeping it's eye on us too. He dove under, came up, spotted us and disappeared in a wave and came up a bit further.
He noticed we came closer and closer... Then he went under and never (seem) to come up again.
Until Amy turned around and saw he made a run for the other side of the water behind us!
He left his prints on the beach..

An amazing goodbye for such a pretty island.

When I came home, someone asked me to knit a shawl with the famous cockle shell pattern. I decided, because it's directional, that the shawl needed to be knit in 2 parts. When that was done, I grafted it in the center, looked at it, and in an instant St. Ninian's came up in my mind...

So.. there you have it. A wonderful experience, a great island, an old pattern and a stunning lace shawl..

The yarn is Merino, Silk, Cashmere in lóvely Dark Red Roses (one of a kind skein).

 The shells meet in the center; when you wear this shawl the shells go in the same direction.
