The Standing Stone in Lund, Unst, Shetland.

I was knitting away happily on a new design, with this name, to remind me of it.
What would one want to wear on such a location.
A warm, wide, woolen shawl. At least I would.
I started designing, testing and after 4 attempts, I came to the conclusion that I was doing too much.
The place is empty.
Like, Heather, Stones, Bracken (ferns) and Sky.
That's it. 

So, scratched the previous patterns and ended up with 2 AND... an extra colour.

That was a big step for me, as I usually keep to 1 colour for lace.
Casted on again. Yes.
Success.

Pattern is okay. Now, I have a big problem with colour. At first I chose a Shetland Black and a light blue. 😍
But after 3 repeats, I know it looked lovely, is too much of a stretch, compared to what you see in this picture.

I really want to stick to Shetland Wool, but I might have to call in some help for this.

Project is on hold for now.
Son got home, having covid. No surprise, as he was is deployed by the navy to help out with testing people.
We've all had our boosters, he has no symptoms. Let's see how this goes.
We've kept it at bay for 2years.

De dagen vliegen voorbij, jongste kind haalde haar diploma, zoon 1 zit bij de marine en zoon 2 is inmiddels vader van ons eerste kleinkind.


Natuurlijk brei ik gewoon door!
Helaas is er niet veel belangstelling (meer) voor Kantwerk lessen of workshops. Dat kan komen omdat de blog is verwaarloosd, maar ik vermoed dat er vele nieuwe breitechnieken worden aangeboden die ook erg interessant zijn. Zoals Brioche in 2 kleuren.

 Hello Knitter!

It's been a long time since my last post. Days flew by, our youngest child graduated from her school, our eldest is in the Navy now and our youngest son became a father. We're proud grandparents!

Of course, knitting continues. Workshops aren't booked anymore. It could be because this blog was neglected (by me) or, more likely, other knitting techniques are quite interesting too! Like two colour Brioche.

En... ik maak video's over Kantbreien! Ik heb mijn camera angst overwonnen (dat is tenminste 1 die ik kan afstrepen) en vertel honderd uit over hoe je Kant Breit.
Het is net niet hetzelfde als een workshop, daar krijg je ook kleine praktische tips, maar toch best handig. Het is wel in het Engels. En dat komt, omdat de Facebook groep zo enthousiast is en dat werkt aanstekelijk. (Link naar groep)

And.. I make video's about Fine lace! I have stepped over my fear of being filmed /camera (one fear less, many to go). I am very chatty to talk about Lace (unscripted). It's not the same as a workshop, there are a bit less practical tips here) but still very educational. It is in English, because the Facebook Group on Fine Shetland Lace... is growing rapidly! That makes me very happy!

A FINE KNIT! 

The Second One.

 Zo'n 4 jaar geleden, heb ik hier op mijn blog mijn prachtige shawl "The One" laten zien. Jéétje wat was ik trots. Nu nog eigenlijk. En ik kreeg dus best wel eens vragen wanneer nou het patroon zou komen. Nu dus pas...

 About 4 years ago I presented the shawl "The One" here on my blog. Oh my, I was só proud, still am. So, the past few years I got questions when the pattern release would be... Well, about now.

Weet je nog dat ik vorig jaar op de openings avond van Shetland WoolWeek 2014, Ina Irvine ontmoet heb? Zij had een hele mooie display van al haar gebreide werken en daar zaten dus ook shawls bij met meerdere natuurlijke kleuren. En op hele fijne naaldjes. Mmmmm. Interessant.


Remember I've met Ina Irvine at the Opening Ceremony during Shetland WoolWeek 2014? She had an amazing display of all her knitwear and shawls. Some of the shawls, as I remember, as I did make a picture I included the shawls, had several colours and were made on fine needles. Mmmmm, Interesting.

 Ik was in de zomer van 2014 al begonnen met het breien en opnieuw in kaart brengen van de patronen, maar ná de WoolWeek, heb ik het opzij gelegd en ben ik metéén overnieuw begonnen.
Met meer kleuren en kleinere naalden.
Ik trommelde wat testbreiers (gelukkig weer genoeg aanmeldingen) bij elkaar en daar gingen we!
Ik heb wel een aanpassing gemaakt, omdat ik zelden 2x dezelfde shawl brei. Vandaar de naam "The Second One".

 I had started knitting for this shawl in the summer of 2014. But immediately after WoolWeek, I ditched that and started over. More colours, finer needles. I rounded up some testknitters (plenty of applicants this time too) and we started together. I did make a little adjustment, because I rarely make a shawl twice. Hence the name; "The Second One".

 Het kiezen van de kleuren was niet zo moeilijk. Er zijn genoeg natuurlijke kleuren van Jamieson & Smith. Black, White, Grey, Moorit, Fawn en de nieuwste: Optical White.
Persoonlijk vind ik de Moorit niet zo mooi, te bruin. Dus die heb ik hier niet in verwerkt. Ik wilde een 'soepele' overgang qua kleuren en de volgorde was dus niet zo moeilijk: van donker naar licht.

Choosing the colours wasn't that difficult. There are plenty of natural colours to choose from at Jamieson & Smith. Black, White, Grey, Moorit, Fawn and the latest: Optical White.
Personally I don't like the Moorit. It's too 'brown'. So I didn't use that. I wanted to create a sort  of Ombre effect, so the choice for order was easy. From dark to light.

In het patroon is een perfect punt om met een nieuwe kleur te beginnen, precies op de kruising in de border. Voor het midden is de Natural White gekozen en speciaal voor het Hart Patroon de Optical white. (Wil je niet voor een paar rijen O.W. een hele nieuwe bal garen kopen, dan kun je gewoon de Natural White gebruiken zonder dat je te kort komt). 

In the pattern for the border is an excellent opportunity to change colours. I chose the Natural White for the centre and the Optical White for the rows with the Heart Pattern. (If you don't want to purchase a whole ball of O.W. for just 12 rows, you can use the Natural White without running short).

Dit patroon heeft: 12 pagina's, (niet allemaal printen!), 6 charts (waarvan 4 worden gelezen als 1), ondersteunende plaatjes en uitleg, GEEN uitgeschreven rijen, niet rondgebreid, je maakt de rand eerst, daarna een border, je moet de delen wel in elkaar zetten/graften/kitchener.
Je kunt op de pagina van Tasha lezen hoe zij hem heeft gemaakt, in het rond gebreid en van buiten naar binnen.

This pattern has: 12 pages (don't print them all!), 6 charts  (4 are worked as one), picture support, NO written rows, worked flat, outwards in, edge is worked first, then the border,  it needs grafting.

 Ik weet nog dat ik jaren geleden geïnteresseerd raakte in Shetland Lace. Ik heb toen als eerste de Shetland Tea Shawl gebreid. Ik had al ervaring met kantbreien op de verkeerde kant van het werk, maar toch was het niet zo eenvoudig als dat het eerst leek. 

 I remember fondly the time when I got interested in Shetland Lace. The Shetland Tea Shawl was the first project I knitted. I did have some experience with knitting patterns on the wrong side of the work, but this was a little bit different.

 Na een paar jaar en heel veel oefenen, begon ik met het geven van Workshops. Voor beginners en gevorderden. Voor de beginners had ik vaak dit patroon (NL, gratis!) om mee te werken en voor gevorderden gebruikte ik het diamant patroon van deze shawl (NL, niet gratis). En met die voorbeelden ging het eigenlijk best goed.

 After many years of hard work, I was able to give workshops. For beginners and experienced knitters. For beginners I often used this as the basic start, (ENG, free) and for the more experienced knitters I used this shawl pattern (ENG, not free). And with these shawls all went pretty well.

Totdat het tijd werd voor wat nieuws. Ik bedacht een proeflapje met een paar mogelijkheden. Die heb ik toen in de goede volgorde gezet, van makkelijk naar moeilijk. Breisters kregen vier patroontjes om mee te oefenen, leren hoe je aan 'de verkeerde kant' van het werk een patroontje in breit.

Until it was time for something new. I made a swatch with some options to choose from. I ordered them from easy to difficult. Knitters were offered 4 patterns to work with, to learn to knit patterns on the "wrong" side of the work.

 Jammer was alleen dat dáár geen eindresultaat was. Natuurlijk konden ze wel andere ontwerpen van Kantwerk maken waarin ook Shetland patronen in voor komen. Mooier zou zijn als er gewoon een hele shawl van kwam met nog meer oefeningen.. En zie hier.

It was a bit sad that there was no end result for this swatch. Ofcourse they could work on other design from A Passion For Lace, which have Shetland patterns in them. But how nice would it be if this was one design, with even more samples of Shetland lace. Here it is...

Ik heb 2 kleuren gebruikt om tijdens het breien duidelijk te houden wat de shawl steken zijn, en welke de rand steken. De rand wordt er later omheen gebreid.

I've used 2 colours for this design, to keep it more clear, what are the shawl stitches and what are the edging stitches. The edging is knitted onto the shawl.

In the end, it turned out right...

Soms, sóms heb je van die momenten. Een opdracht waar geen tijdsdruk op ligt, vervolgens dus blijft liggen en dan op het laatste moment er achter komen dat het véél meer werk is dan je had gedacht.
Arrogantie en te weinig ervaring.

Sometimes, occasionally you've gotten sloppy. An assignment that has no deadline, which means it has been laying around for ever and then as the deadlines is in clear sight, you realize it was a lót more work than you had anticipated.
Arrogance and not enough experience.

 Zo moet het er uit komen te zien; het groene vestje.

Eerst maar eens besloten om beide delen TEGELIJK op te zetten; dan was ik er het snelst vanaf mee klaar. Dat bleek uiteindelijk een goede keus. 

I decided to cast on for both parts at the same time, to be done with it quicker. In the end it proved to be a very good choice.

De mouwen. Dat viel nog niet mee! Er stonden best veel steken op de naald en voor je heen en weer bent... Maar het is wel vrolijk, al die frisse kleurtjes.

The sleeves. That was hard work! A lot of stitches on the needle and it took a long time to knit a row. It is very pretty in these bright colours.

Toch maar even geïnformeerd hoe lang de mouwen moesten worden. Ik kon een patroon inkorten en dan hup aan het werk voor het voor en achterpand. Dat was interessant; nu moest ik de delen splitsen. Op sommige stukken betekende dat, dat er 8 bollen wol aan hingen te bungelen om in patroon te kunnen blijven werken. Dat ben ik niet gewend!

First I had to inquire for the sleeve length, that meant I could omit one pattern and start right away with the front and back. Then it became more interesting as I had to separate the parts for the neck opening. Working the pattern it meant I had to use 8 balls of yarn; I'm NOT used to that!

Hé het lijkt er al op! Maar het is meer een losse flodder dan een prachtig vestje op een foto... Nu kwam de ellende; het eindeloos wegwerken van losse draadjes. Nu, met mijn shawls zijn dat er hoog uit 3 of 4... Kijk eens naar de kleurwisselingen! Ik zag er als een berg tegen op. Dat vertraagde het wel een beetje...



Yes, it's starting to look like the cardigan from the picture. It's a bit floppy.. Now for the hard part; weaving in all ends. Believe me, there were a lot! I'm not used to that either; knitting my shawls leaves me usually with 3 or 4 strands. It seriously slowed me down.

En uiteindelijk kwam het toch weer goed... Na een aangebreide boord aan de onderkant, gehaakte randen om de sluiting en de nek en een zacht zeepbadje mocht het vestje uitrusten op bed. Na dat het droog was, gewacht tot de zon scheen en gauw naar buiten en foto's maken!

In the end it turned out just right... After I've knitted an edging and crochet-ed the front and neckline, a soft soapy bath the cropped cardigan could take a little nap on the bed.
When it was dry and the sun came out, it was time for some pictures!

De nieuwe eigenaar is er reuze blij mee! Kijk maar...

Across the Beach

Omdat het een lange rustige zomer zou worden, had ik al wat ideeën voor een nieuwe shawl. Na wat voor onderzoek op Ravelry, zodat ik niet eindig met iets wat er al is.., zag ik wel dat de korte driehoekige shawls erg populair zijn.

Je begint met een randje en dan een leuk kantje en nog wat verkorte rijen en klaar is kees.

Because it was going to be an easy lazy summer I had time to work out some of my ideas. I did some research on Ravelry so I wouldn't end up with something that's already there. I noticed the short triangular shawls are very popular.

Starting with an edge, then a little lace and some short rows and presto! 

Dus een proeflapje gebreid met de patronen er in die ik wilde gebruiken. Kijken of ik het kloppend kon krijgen en of het allemaal wel zo er uit zou zien zoals ik het in mijn hoofd had.

Voor een proeflapje was dit wel te doen, maar voor een echte shawl was het wel veel werk. Dus een patroon laten vallen dan maar beginnen. 

So I knitted a swatch using the chosen patterns and seeing if it all would look like I had in mind. For a swatch is was workable, but I had to loose some patterns. That was obvious. 

Toen het garen gekozen. Ik was op zoek naar de juiste kleur voor de schelpen en het moest een beetje glanzen. De patronen zelf zijn vrij rekbaar en zijde leek een goede keus. Het werd de Kaalund Enchanté en de winkel had nog net genoeg.

The yarn was chosen. I had to find something with the right colour to accentuate the shell pattern and it had to shine a bit too. The patterns are very flexible and the silk looked like a good choice. I ordered the Kaalund Enchanté. 

Ik hèb aantekeningen gemaakt toen ik begon met breien, maar op een of andere manier was ik lekker aan het breien en minder aan het schrijven... Ik had alles netjes geprint maar omdat het een driehoek is, moest er wel geminderd worden. Op 3 plekken.

I díd make notes when I started knitting, but somehow I ended up enjoying the work and neglecting the writing bit. I also printed the patterns but because it would be a triangle I had to start decreasing. At 3 locations. (location, location, location!) 

De moeilijkste delen waren geweest en toen gingen we met vakantie. Weekje Roermond, erg leuk en amper een steek gebreid. Eenmaal weer terug op de bank het werk weer opgepakt en bedacht dat het wel mooi was geweest. Nu voor een makkelijk stuk. Ik heb dus het laatste deel gewoon recht/averecht gebreid. Op die manier komt de rand extra mooi uit en komt de vorm ook veel mooier in de shawl terwijl je hem draagt. Kijk maar....

The hard parts were done and then it was time for a little vacation. A week in Roermond, it was nice, hardly knit a thing at all. Once back on the couch, I picked up the project and decided it was very pretty but time for something easier. So, I did only stockinette and that helped with the shaping of the shawl, the edge comes out even better and it wears very well as you can see...

Shetland Bound

Wat heb ik het lang stil moeten houden! Wat wás het spannend! Ik was al vanaf vorig jaar van plan om naar de Shetland Eilanden te gaan. Ik kwam er in 2011 te laat achter dat de Wool Week gehouden werd in Oktober. Maar met alles wat er al was gebeurd, was dat maar goed ook.

I had to keep it a secret for só long! And what wás it exciting! I had planned to go to the Shetland Isles already last year. It was too late to go when I found out the Wool Week was held, but with everything that went on here, it was better I didn't go at all.

Toen ik bij haar op visite ben geweest om informatie aan te vragen heb ik dus eigenlijk dezelfde avond nog mijn ticket geboekt. Ik kon mijn ogen niet geloven! Ik ga naar Shetland!  Ook meteen maar bij de autoverhuur gekeken en een Ford Ka gereserveerd. Het eiland heeft een goede bus verbinding, maar een 'eigen' auto is wel zo handig.

When I went and visited her, I got lots of information. I actually booked my flight the same evening! I couldn't believe it! I'm going to Shetland! Right away placed an reservation for a car to hire. I've heard Shetland has an excellent bus company, but driving yourself might come in more handy.

Kun je mijn verbazing voorstellen dat ik plotseling een mail kreeg uit Shetland, ván Jamieson & Smith, of ik misschien voor hen een shawl kon ontwerpen?? Ik viel nog net niet van mijn stoel! WOW.. 

Can you imagne my surprise when I got an email fróm the Shetlands, from Jamieson & Smith, asking me to design a shawl? I almost fell of my chair!! WOW.. 

Eerst schetsen maken, toen uitproberen, knippen en plakken met voorbeelden.. En dán? Uitvoeren! Is het wel goed genoeg? Kunnen ze er wel wat mee?? Mijn patronen zijn meestal wel leuk, maar zeker niet foutloos.  Hoe moet het nu ooit goedkomen? 

Ik kreeg het garen, en daar ging ik dan. Breien maar. Vanaf eigen patroon. En op de gok dat het garen genoeg zou zijn. Je kunt nog zo veel berekenen, het moet wel uitkomen.

First make some samples, swatches and do some cut and paste with examples. Then what? Executing! Is it good enough? Will it be something for their company? My patterns are nice, but absolutely not flawless. Will it all work out?? 
I got the yarn, and casted on. From my own charts and notes. Hoping the yarn would be enough, despite all my calculations.

This gave me a photo opportunity to take pictures with one of my other designs: Love on the Edge.. 

Deadline werd gehaald en hij kon op de post, naar Shetland; Lerwick. Het werd alleen maar spannender. Toen kreeg ik na een paar weken bericht dat ze het patroon aan het editten waren. Er zaten gelukkig niet zo veel fouten in, even bijschaven en huppekéé! Klaar! En dan maar wachten op de publicatie. 

Deadline was made and it could be shipped to the Shetland Isles; Lerwick. It all got even more exciting! After a few weeks I got the message 'they' were editing the pattern. Luckily there weren't that many mistakes, just polishing everthing up and done! Then the wait for the publication started.

I'm on my way to Shetland, I'm Shetland Bound!
