Esha Knit-a-Long

Ik heb speciaal deze swatches gemaakt om het belang van garen keuze duidelijk te maken. Zoals je wel kunt raden, houd ik zelf van de dunnere garens. Maar het hoeft niet altijd meteen ultra dun of gossamer te zijn. 

Echter, met Shetland kant is het wel bepalend welk garen je kiest, zodat de dikte niet afleid van het kant patroon. Hoe dunner het garen, des te beter zie je het patroon. (Paars op 1,5mm, oranje handgesponnen op 2,5mm en blauwe Zitron Filisilk op 3,5mm). 

 I’ve made these swatches to show the importance of yarn choices. You can already guess that I'm fond of the finer yarns, and it doesn’t have to be thread or gossamer all the time. But with Shetland lace, a bigger yarn can distract a lot from the pattern.

The blue is worked in 3,5mm needles with Zitron Filisilk yarn.
THe orange is handspun on 2,5mm needles and the purple is on 1,5mm needles (Gossamer cashmere).

Een close up van de 2 grotere lapjes. Je kunt de ribbels duidelijk zien en vooral bij het blauwe (vind ik) leiden de ribbels erg af van het kant patroon. Door de ribbels wordt het ook nog eens erg rekbaar en had het lapje zelfs nog wel op naald 3mm gebreid kunnen worden.


A close up of the two larger swatches. You can clearly see the ridges of the garter stitch. I think they distract too much from the lace pattern. Due to the garter stitch, it becomes very stretchy and with the lace pattern, this would have been a bit better if worked on 3mm needles instead.

De reden waarom ik dit vertel?? Omdat er een Knit-a-Long komt! Van de Esha shawl.
Samen met een groep breiers (niet alleen in NL!) lekker breien en kletsen én elkaar helpen!
In deze shawl wordt er geoefend met kantpatronen die je vaak terug kunt vinden in Shetland kant.
Elk diamantje wordt gevuld met een patroontje en die worden steeds een beetje moeilijker.
Omdat de diamantjes niet zo groot zijn, en alles netjes binnen de lijntjes blijft, kun je bijvoorbeeld iedere week 2 rijen met diamantjes breien.
Het hoeft niet in heel dun garen maar dat maakt het wel mooier...

In this shawl, you can learn patterns that occur frequently in Shetland lace. With each patterned diamond, difficulty rises a bit. For instance, you can knit 2 rows of diamonds per week.
The shawl can be knitted in fine lace yarn, but you don't have too. In my opinion it will look better if you do.

Ik heb gekozen voor een rand in een andere kleur, zodat je tijdens het breien duidelijk kunt zien welke steken van de shawl zijn en die van de rand.
Het hoeft niet meteen in donker garen, ik heb onlangs een foto gehad van iemand die na de workshop de Esha in prachtig lichtblauw garen had gebreid! Dank je wel Joke Verbruggen voor de foto.

The shawl doesn't need to be worked in a dark yarn or with another colour for the edge. I did that, so it would be clear, that when you are knitting on the edge, which stitches are of the shawl and which are for the edge.

It can be worked in a lighter yarn, just look at the shawl Joke Verbruggen made in fine lace yarn, after she took my workshop for knitted lace. Thank you Joke for the photo.

 Ik weet nog dat ik jaren geleden geïnteresseerd raakte in Shetland Lace. Ik heb toen als eerste de Shetland Tea Shawl gebreid. Ik had al ervaring met kantbreien op de verkeerde kant van het werk, maar toch was het niet zo eenvoudig als dat het eerst leek. 

 I remember fondly the time when I got interested in Shetland Lace. The Shetland Tea Shawl was the first project I knitted. I did have some experience with knitting patterns on the wrong side of the work, but this was a little bit different.

 Na een paar jaar en heel veel oefenen, begon ik met het geven van Workshops. Voor beginners en gevorderden. Voor de beginners had ik vaak dit patroon (NL, gratis!) om mee te werken en voor gevorderden gebruikte ik het diamant patroon van deze shawl (NL, niet gratis). En met die voorbeelden ging het eigenlijk best goed.

 After many years of hard work, I was able to give workshops. For beginners and experienced knitters. For beginners I often used this as the basic start, (ENG, free) and for the more experienced knitters I used this shawl pattern (ENG, not free). And with these shawls all went pretty well.

Totdat het tijd werd voor wat nieuws. Ik bedacht een proeflapje met een paar mogelijkheden. Die heb ik toen in de goede volgorde gezet, van makkelijk naar moeilijk. Breisters kregen vier patroontjes om mee te oefenen, leren hoe je aan 'de verkeerde kant' van het werk een patroontje in breit.

Until it was time for something new. I made a swatch with some options to choose from. I ordered them from easy to difficult. Knitters were offered 4 patterns to work with, to learn to knit patterns on the "wrong" side of the work.

 Jammer was alleen dat dáár geen eindresultaat was. Natuurlijk konden ze wel andere ontwerpen van Kantwerk maken waarin ook Shetland patronen in voor komen. Mooier zou zijn als er gewoon een hele shawl van kwam met nog meer oefeningen.. En zie hier.

It was a bit sad that there was no end result for this swatch. Ofcourse they could work on other design from A Passion For Lace, which have Shetland patterns in them. But how nice would it be if this was one design, with even more samples of Shetland lace. Here it is...

Ik heb 2 kleuren gebruikt om tijdens het breien duidelijk te houden wat de shawl steken zijn, en welke de rand steken. De rand wordt er later omheen gebreid.

I've used 2 colours for this design, to keep it more clear, what are the shawl stitches and what are the edging stitches. The edging is knitted onto the shawl.

Brae

Vorig jaar stond ik op de MidWinterWol in Winschoten. Een heel ander publiek dan op de meeste beurzen waar ik kom; spinners, wevers, kantklossers, vilters enz. Erg interessant want zo leer je weer wat bij, maar voor het publiek was ik de enige met gebreide items.
Ik stond er ook om de breiriem te demonstreren, maar door de kou in de hal ging dat niet zo soepel.
Anyway... er was erg veel belangstelling voor mijn mini kraampje met gebreide shawls. 

Last year I was part of a craft fair in Winschoten; MidWinterWol. A whole different set of people due to the set up of the Fair. Weavers, spinners, bobbin lace and felters. Very interesting and lots to learn. For the public I was the 'only' one with knit items and they found it very pretty and my little booth was quite busy.
I was also there to demonstrate the knittingbelt but due to the low temperature in the hall that proved to be a bit difficult. 

Ik heb daar kaartjes uitgedeeld met alle informatie en er was een mevrouw die wel belangstelling had. Ik mocht voor haar een shawl breien. Ik heb het patroon een beetje aangepast zodat het een mooi geheel werd met een mooie rand. 

I've given out some business cards and one lady was so interested that she made an appointment to meet me. She gave me a pattern to work with and I designed it so it would make a lovely shawl and pretty edging. 

Het bijzondere was eigenlijk dat ze wel een ERG lange shawl wilde: twee meter vijftig lang. Wow. Dat heb ik nog nooit gedaan. Alhoewel de Love Darg ook in de richting komt met 2,2m, is het voor je gevoel eindeloos lang. 

The special thing with this commission was that it had to be very, very long: 100". I've never knit such a long shawl, although the Love Darg came close with 90" but it still sounds like a lot. 

Sinds dat ik het graften aardig onder de knie heb, kies ik er sneller voor. Bovendien, wanneer je deze shawl draagt, loopt het patroon op dezelfde manier naar boven.

Since I have become pretty handy in grafting 2 parts, I tend to choose it as a design option more often. Besides, while wearing the shawl, the pattern runs up the same way. 

Omdat ik beide delen tegelijkertijd heb gebreid; zo is de 'tension' gelijk en zijn beide delen even groot was ik best snel klaar! Door het zachte garen, wat de mevrouw op de MidWinterWol had gekocht, is het werkelijk een weelde van zwarte zachtheid om je heen...

Because I have worked both halves at the same time, so knitting tension is exactly the same and both parts have the same dimensions, I was done pretty quick. The soft yarn the lady had purchased at the MidWinterWol fair, makes it a luscious shawl to wear.

Sandness Heather...

When you're on Shetland, you're surrounded by Heather. All over the place.
The culture shock for me, the no-trees thing, wasn't as 'bad' as the heather thing. The compact heather makes peat over the years/centuries and that is cut in the fields. And once dried it's to light a fire.
When you're European, you know that when you go to the mountains (there aren't any in The Netherlands) you see a nice valley with a village or a town or a city in it. Think of Rome...
Not in the Shetland Isles. Heather. And Water.

And then.... the Silence. I live in a area which is called: De Wâlden, or the woody area. So I'm used to hearing the wind in the trees. Here are NO trees. (at least not much, I spotted some pines in Voe and Brae).
So... no sound. I know, the wind is there, but the sound is different. And what I also missed was the smell of the sea. Sorry, the ocean. It probably was so windy, it blew away. The only day I smelled the ocean was on Friday, when it was very windy and the waves had a great time playing around the rocks.

Back to the heather.
Wednesday it was time to go to Sandness. Next to Eshaness and Hermaness my favorite place in the WORLD. Again, utter the silence, the sheep, the wideness of the landscape and the way that single road meandered through the land. I saw it with my own eyes, but couldn't believe it.

Weisdale

Because I got sick on the bus to Voe, Tuesday, we decided to take the car. A lucky thing, as I will tell you later. The road to Sandness is one of great boredom, like the picture on top. Wide valleys, hardly any sheep because it's too wet. Once you pass Hellister, the road to Weisdale is the most amazing drive to do on the entire island. The way goes up, and just at the right spot is a passing place, eventhough it is still a two way road, to take in the view.
We were fortunate enough that the sun was shining through the clouds and all the way to the south it was isles and the silver water.

Then, when you pass Bixter and continue on to the Bridge of Walls, nót going to Walls, you steer away from life as you know it, and continue on a single road. Thére the happiness begins.
Heather, small streams, passing sheep. Silence. Silence, more silence. Infact, we were driving and you could SEE the silence. There just wasn't anything to make noise.

I was VERY impressed. We passed only a few four wheel drives (you actually need those over there, it's not a fashion statement) and started to wonder what would we find at the end of this road!

And we found a very small village, and a factory. And even thát didn't make much noise at all. Or they were having a break.

 The Jamieson's of Shetland factory, where they select, dye, card, spin, weave and handle wool. Lots of it. And amazing quality. We got to see the machines make fabric (like tweed) and knit sweaters. We got to see all the steps of selecting, processing and producing products from the wool. Garry, the kind young man who showed us everthing, gave us the knowledge the plant had even woven fabric for Ralph Lauren. So.. at the end of the guide tour, Cathy was so kind to ask him, if it was possible for him to show us the fabric... The first tour group was already seated in the bus! So we went upstairs for a 'quick' look.

My mother had asked me, if possible, I could bring her some tweed so she could quilt with it. I asked Garry if it was an option for me to get me some tweed. He told me I could point at a roll of fabric, they would cut the amount and sent it to me.
But that wasn't what I had in mind. My mother cannot quilt with anything 'single'. He pointed at the waste bin... I asked, he nodded and then 6 women went wild in the bin. Picking out fabric, nicely putting back the (large) pieces that were tagged.

The call came that the bus would be leaving, and because Amy and me were by car, we kept on 'grabbing' at pieces and parts of the tweed in the bin.
Thanking Garry a lot, we went back downstairs and smiling at our new required treasure.
We were already sitting in the car, chatting about our luck, when the lady from the shop came running.
Oh oh..

We opened the door, thinking about what to say. She said we forgot something. Our goodie bag... Oh my god, more??
We thanked her vèry much, covering our treasure and googling the new found goodies.
A pattern, (lace) yarn, a colour card and a fabric bag with Shetland language for english knitting terms.

What a day.
We had to speed things up, because I had to be back at Jamieson & Smith by 18:00 for the Let's talk Lace evening. (more about that later..)

I did manage to buy some yarn at Jamieson's of Shetland. They had to pull it of a shelf out back, it was not on display in the shop. I had glanced at the colour card and noticed a lovely orange.
The same shade of the shawl the lady on the bus was wearing, the day before. She drove us back from Voe and I had found here wrap amazing. It was fine knit, and because I couldn't find the same shade in the right weight, I had bought the Heather Gingersnap instead.

The road from Voe to Lerwick was long enough for me, to try and study the pattern of her wrap. It wasn't so difficult. I could remember that. When I casted on, and had knitted the first three repeats, I thought it might look a bit to much of a leopard print. So I knitted a plain center part. Then, my mother saw it, loved it, and didn't want it that wide... Mirrored the little squares and bound off. 

She can wear it doubled around her neck, and when it's colder, once around her neck and the other half around her head.
It's 29" wide (double) or 250 stitches (on size 4,5mm needles).
The yarn? Jamieson's of Shetland Heather in Gingersnap and Mirrydancers.

Laminaria...

Er was eens... Lang geleden een prachtig ontwerp gesignaleerd op Knitty.
Knitty was alom bekend om intrigerende ontwerpen en oog voor detail in projecten.

Gelukkig is het in al die jaren overeind gebleven, ook en waarschijnlijk voorál na het fenomeen dat Ravelry heet.
Elk kwartaal komen er nieuwe shawls uit, nieuwe trui- en sokontwerpen en nu ook speciale projecten voor handgesponnen garens.
Vooral omdat ik zelf NIET spin, en toch wel een probleem maak van het maken van een twééde sok, te lang ben voor een trui, focus ik me op de kant ontwerpen.

Once, there was... a long time ago a wonderfull design spotted on Knitty.
Knitty is a renowned location for intriguing designs and an eye for details in projects.

Luckily it survived all the years, including or despite the rise of Ravelry, a new phenomenon.
Each quarter of the year a new set of shawls, sweater and sock designs emerge, and recently even projects especially for handspun yarns.
Because I do NOT spin yarn myself, I suffer severely from Second Sock Syndrome and I'm to tall for a sweater I focus on the lace designs.

 En omdat nu na al die jaren, bijna iedereen de Laminaria wel kent, kan ik nu wegkomen met prachtige detail foto's.

 And because the Laminaria is now well known, I can get away with some awesome detailed photographs.

 Herkent u deze nog?? Want deze is eigenlijk niet nieuw. Hij was eerst lichtblauw! Maar omdat ik lekker aan het klooien was met logo's en deze al heel lang in mijn kast ligt, was het tijd voor deze make-over.

 Do you recognize this?? Because it isn't new at all. It was previously light blue. Iceblue to be exact. But when I started working on the new logo and saw that this was still in my home, it was in serious danger of a make-over.

Dus... tijd voor een nieuwe fotosessie en om de tijd te vullen. Ik ben andere projecten die al lang op de naalden staan aan het afmaken, en dat kan nog wel even duren.. 

 So.. time for a new photosession and a bit of a breather. I'm currently finishing other projects that have been on the needles tó long. And it might take longer...

I'm back! Ik ben er weer!

Ik ben er weer. Ik doe weer een beetje mee. Ik was in januari al begonnen met deze shawl, maar na de Laminaria III kwam het er even niet van om er mee verder te gaan.
I'm back! At least for a bit. I've started this shawl way back in January, but the Laminaria III came and this was in pauze for a bit.

Natuurlijk kon ik het patroon breien zoals het in het boek staat, The Lerwick Lace Shawl maar je kent me... dat heb ik niet gedaan. In de foto hierboven zie je een diamant met birdseye patroon, die staat ook in het boek. Maar de kleinere diamant erboven heb ik 'losjes' ingevuld met het Fancy Net pattern van de Love Darg shawl. (die zie je misschien dit jaar ook nog voorbij komen...)
Ofcourse I could have knitted the pattern as is written in the book, The Lerwick Lace Shawl, but you know me.. I didn't. In the picture above you see the big diamond with birdseye pattern, from the book. But the little diamond above I turned loosely into a Fancy Net pattern from the Love Darg Shawl (which will be seen here probably this year too...)

En toen ging ik aan het midden beginnen. Erg mooi hoor, maar een beetje te saai om dat 32 x te herhalen. Dus maar een patroon uit Heirloom Knitting gekozen en ingevoegd. (pagina 148 geloof ik)
Then the center came up. Very pretty in the original, but a bit boring to repeat 32 times. So I chose a pattern from Heirloom Knitting and added that. (page 148 I believe..)


Zo ver ben ik nu. Ik moet nog een heel eind en liefst een beetje snel anders kan ik niet meer kans maken op een prijs in de ColourMart Spring Contest 2011... Hihi.

This is how far I got till now. Still a long way to go, and preferably a bit quick. Otherwise I don't stand a chance of winning anything in the ColourMart Spring Contest 2011... hihi.

Truely Something.

Hoe het allemaal begon.
Héél lang geleden, toen Wolhemel net begonnen was, en ik net op gang was met kantbreien, mocht ik voor hun een sjaal in opdracht breien. The Myrtle Leaf uit Victorian Lace Today.
Prachtig project en met heel veel plezier gemaakt.
Zo veel plezier zelfs, dat het al die tijd in m'n hoofd zat dat ik dié nog een keer wilde breien. In het zwart, net als in het boek.

How it all got started. Years back, when I just got started on laceknitting, and Wolhemel got started up; I got the assignment to knit a shawl for them. The Myrtle Leaf in Victorian Lace Today. I really loved knitting it, and eversince I did, I wanted to knit it again; in black just like in the book.
Twee jaar ging voorbij en telkens kwam het er maar niet van. Tot september. Ik had een sjaal opgezet voor mijn tante in zwarte cashmere, maar ik had er eigenlijk geen geduld voor. Toen heb ik de cone gesplitst en begonnen aan de Myrtle Leaf. Eindelijk.
Two years came and went and I didn't knit the shawl again. Until September this year. I was knitting a black cashmere shawl for my aunt and it wasn't what I thought it would be. That's when I split the cone and started on the Myrtle Leaf. Finally.
En toen.... had ik geen zin meer. De drang was al een beetje weggeëbt en na 20 (van de 40) herhalingen had ik het wel gehad. Ik dacht: wie doet me wat, ik plak er gewoon een ander patroon aan vast wat ik wel leuk vind. Rond die tijd was ik druk bezig met Shetland shawls uit het museum daar, (later meer hierover) en vond dit diamant patroon. Precies goed en het paste ook nog met het stekenaantal! Ook in true lace. De rand was ook nog even zoeken, maar daar was ie dan. Een prachtige zwarte cashmere shawl voor mijn tante.
And then I got fed up with it... The urge had gone a bit and after only 20 of the 40 repeats done, I wanted to knit something else. So I did. I was, at that time, also very busy with pictures of Shetland Shawls of the museum of the isles (more on that later).. I found this true lace diamond pattern and thought it would fit perfectly. I didn't even have to alter the stitchcount. Then I had to find a new edging too and it all came together...
A beautiful black cashmere shawl for my aunt.
Ik heb het patroon opgeschreven, (pdf bestand verkrijgbaar via Ravelry) en omdat ik het met ColourMart garen heb gebreidt en precies op 15 september begonnen was, kon ik meedoen met een wedstrijd op Ravelry. En ik won de twééde prijs in de categorie voor Designs!!! Yeah.
Daarna werd er nog een Most Popular overall Contest gehouden en daarbij werd ik ... 1e!!! Iedereen bedankt voor je stem!
I wrote down the pattern (pdf file available on Ravelry) and because I had used ColourMart yarn and started on September 15, I could compete in the ColourMart Fall Contest 2010 and I won second prize in Design! Later there was also a Most Popular Overall and I won... first prize!! Everyone thank you for voting!
Dus... ik heb méér cashmere gewonnen. Ik heb (natuurlijk) voor meer zwart gekozen. En ben al aan het brainstormen over een nieuw ontwerp.
So... I won móre cashmere. Ofcourse I chose for more black. And already brainstorming over a new pattern.
