Blocking lace / Kant opspannen

Stel je hebt net een prachtige shawl met kantpatronen gebreid, hij is eindelijk af en ligt als een onduidelijk wolkje in je handen.
Say you've knitted a beautiful shawl with lace patterns, it's finally done and it's like an undefined cloud in your hands.

 Je wast hem voorzichtig met een wasmiddel dat geschikt is voor het garen wat je gebruikt hebt. Er zijn een paar 'regels': gewoon in het water laten liggen, niet te lang (kwartiertje, half uur) en niet te veel bewegen. Het water is handwarm of iets warmer.

 You wash the shawl very caryfully with a detergent that is suitable for the yarn you've used. There are still some 'rules' ; leave it in the water, don't stirr too much and don't leave it in the water too long (15-30minutes). The water is luke warm or a bit warmer.

 Haal het uit het water en laat het uitdruppen in je handen. NIET WRINGEN! Leg voorzichtig in een handdoek en druk het water er uit.
Take your shawl out of the water carefully and let it drip out excess water in your hands. DO NOT WRING! Lay out with care on a towel and press out the water.

 Leg je shawl uit op het bed, matras of schuim waar je de shawl gaat opspannen. Zorg er voor dat je de shawl NOOIT aan de punten vasthoud. Het garen zou kunnen knappen. Ondersteun altijd wanneer je de shawl over grote stukken moet verplaatsen.
Lay out your shawl on a bed, matras or foam on which you're going to pin the shawl down. Be aware NOT EVER to hold the shawl by the corners or single points. The yarn could snap due to the weight. Support the shawl when you're moving it over a large section.

 Pak de lussen op met een block draad of brei naald. Je kunt ook de punten pakken. Pak NIET de laatste lus, maar altijd een setje waar een opening is. Het garen kan knappen (zelfs zijde!) als je maar 1 lusje pakt.
Kun je maar 1 lus pakken, span dan eerst los op en trek later de shawl 'strak'.

 Pick up loops on the sides of the shawl or pick up the points. NEVER take just one loop, the yarn will snap when you block it (too) hard. If possible, pick up a set of stitches or in a yarn over. Or, when you only have loops, pick up the loops and stretch out. You can adjust tension later.

 Dit is een driehoek swatch dus ik kon de bovenste lussen in een keer oppakken. Anders begin je op de hoekpunten en dan werk je iedere keer naar het midden van de shawl. Halveer telkens het stuk waar je mee bezig bent.

 This is a triangular swatch and I was able to pick up all loops at once. Otherwise start at the corners and work your way to the centre. Devide the length you're blocking continuesly.

Door de kantsteken die je gebruikt hebt, komen ze nu écht op elkaar te liggen en de omslagen komen mooi open te staan. Het katnt komt tot leven.
By using the lace stitches, they really lay on top of eachother after blocking. Yarn overs pop open and make the lace come alive.

 Dan ziet het er uiteindelijk zo uit. Netjes en niet te strak.

In the end it will look like this, not to tight but all stitches are clearly visible.

 Budding Lotus

This shawl is knit up, in one go. This is a good pattern for a beginner knitter yet interesting enough for an experienced knitter. This shawl is charted, not written out. 

 Deze shawl wordt gebreid van onder naar boven in een stuk. Het is voor een beginner goed te doen. Er zijn alleen charts.

Pattern: Budding Lotus (available as pattern download and as a kit) 
Design: MoniqueB 
Yarn: Fine Merino Natural dyed Lace in Green and Blue (250m) each Renaissance Dyeing
Needle: 3mm or US 2,5

Size 160 cms x 48cms or 63 inches x 19 inches

Errata: in the instructions point 6 it states: work row 1-28. It should be: work row 1-30. The chart IS correct.

Lotus Chained

Dit patroon heeft charts en gedeeltelijk uitgeschreven rijen. 

 This pattern has charts and partially written rows. 

 This shawl is knit sideways in one piece. A one skein wonder!

 Deze shawl wordt in een keer gebreid; je begint bij de rechterpunt en breit naar de linkerpunt. Je hebt genoeg aan 1 streng garen!

Fit for a prince...

Ik vond deze foto op Google! Het prinsje in Engeland is geboren en wordt door zijn moeder gedragen in een (hand?) gebreide SHETLAND shawl!
Er hangt iets aan wat op een etiketje lijkt, maar de patronen zijn duidelijk herkenbaar.

I found this picture on Google! The little prince, third in line for the throne of England, is born and is carried by his mother in a (handknitted) SHETLAND knit shawl!
There seems to be sort of a tag on it, but the patterns are clearly visible.

Aith

Al héél lang geleden is deze bijna onzichtbare shawl gebreid. Ik ben er ook erg lang mee bezig geweest om het allemaal op te schrijven en te breien... Maar aantekeningen maken nog geen patroon...

A lóng time ago, I've been knitting this almost invisible shawl. It took me a long time too to write it all down and knitting it. But pattern notes do not make a pattern...

In een van de nieuwsbrieven had ik al gemeld dat ik er mee bezig was, maar dat er telkens wat tussen kwam... Nu is het dan eindelijk afgekomen. En met anderhalve zonnestraal vanmiddag gauw nieuwe foto's gemaakt.

In one of my newsletters I mentioned I've been working on it and it got sidetracked due to other activities. Finally it all came together. And with some rare sunrays in this cold summer I managed to take some new pictures.

Aith. (formerly known as Shetland Sunset)

This shawl was knit before I even thought of going to Shetland. The yarn is so delicate and soft, I had to pay attention while knitting it. When the shawl was done, I decided I had to go to Shetland and see it (the island and 
the lace) for myself. I went October 2012. 
Aith is very small village on the island of Shetland. 
When I was there, I was merely passing on my way from Voe. I was struck by the remoteness of the location and the fact it was the only place where I saw birds and heard them singing. I stopped the car and listened to it. 
Back home, I realized I should have gone out of the car and experience the beauty surrounding me.
This shawl and Aith have something in common; if you don’t pay attention, you might miss it’s beauty.

Sort of an Anniversary

Bij het begin beginnen..
Toen ik 16 was, kreeg ik voor het eerst verkering. Hij was ook 16. Prachtige jongen, geweldige tijd. We gingen natuurlijk nog naar school en alhoewel hij in een andere stad naar school ging, haalden we allebei in het zelfde jaar ons diploma.
De wereld lag aan onze voeten en het zou een geweldige zomer worden... Zou..

Lets start at the beginning.
I was 16 when I met my very first boyfriend. He was 16 also. Beautiful boy and we had a great time. We both went to school but he was in a different city, both of us graduated in the same year.
The world at our feet and it would be the start of a great summer.... It should have been...

 Zo waren we in juni op een sport evenement aan het volleyballen. Tot hij omviel en dood ging. Bijna 19 jaar oud. Daar sta je dan... Heel Nederland vierde feest omdat 'we' gewonnen hadden met voetbal en wij (zijn ouders/familie) stonden met lege handen.

 That early summer we were at a sporting event playing volleybal. He fell over and he died.
Barely 19. Just like that. The whole nation was celebrating some soccer event 'we' had won, and we (his family/my family) was left empty handed.

 Wat een schok. Ongeloof. Eigenlijk weten we nog steeds niet wat het nu precies was. Maakt ook niet meer uit. De wereld stond stil.
De rest van de zomer heb ik bij familie gelogeerd, zodat ik even niet thuis was en aan iets anders kon denken.

 The shock. Disbelief. How could this have happened? We still don't know and it doesn't really matter anymore. The world had stopped turning.
I was able to stay with relatives for that summer to get away from it all and think about something else.

 Maar in september moest ik gewoon weer naar school. Ook al kon ik mijn aandacht er toch niet bijhouden; ik kreeg weer ritme. Regelmaat. Het leven ging langzaam weer verder.
Na 3 jaar ontmoette ik (in de zomer) een hele leuke jongeman waar ik nu bijna 21 jaar mee leef en 19 jaar mee getrouwd ben.

 In september of that year I had to get back to school; and eventhough I wasn't able to pay very good attention to what I was doing, it brought ritme and stability.
3 Years later, it was summer again, I met a very nice youngman. I've been spending the last 21 years with him, 19 of those married.

Zo'n 10 jaar geleden werd onze dochter geboren en pakte ik het breien wat intensiever op..

Na verloop van tijd begon ik shawls 'uit te delen'. Mijn moeder was als eerst aan de beurt. Ze heeft inmiddels een behoorlijke collectie van mijn hand. Mijn Oma ook.
Dus besloot ik om voor de familie die mij, 25 jaar geleden, heeft geholpen een moeilijke tijd door te komen; een shawl kado te doen. Gelukkig zijn ze er altijd erg blij mee.

About 10 years ago our daughter was born and I started knitting more frequently...
After a while I decided to give away some of them. My mother got some (she's actually got quite a collection now) and my grandmother too.
So I decided also to give the family that have helped me through a though time 25 years ago a shawl. I was very pleased they all were very happy to recieve one.

Ik ben bijna klaar... Ik moet nog vragen of de moeder van mijn vriendje mijn aanbod accepteert. Dat wordt een hele speciale shawl.
I'm almost done. I have to ask if the mother of my boyfriend will accept my special shawl offer.

En...
And...

Nu dat het 25 jaar terug is dat dát gebeurd is, wil ik het afsluiten met iets positiefs.
Now that this has happened 25 years ago, I want to close it on a happier note.

In the end, it turned out right...

Soms, sóms heb je van die momenten. Een opdracht waar geen tijdsdruk op ligt, vervolgens dus blijft liggen en dan op het laatste moment er achter komen dat het véél meer werk is dan je had gedacht.
Arrogantie en te weinig ervaring.

Sometimes, occasionally you've gotten sloppy. An assignment that has no deadline, which means it has been laying around for ever and then as the deadlines is in clear sight, you realize it was a lót more work than you had anticipated.
Arrogance and not enough experience.

 Zo moet het er uit komen te zien; het groene vestje.

 This is the target, the little green cropped cardigan...

Eerst maar eens besloten om beide delen TEGELIJK op te zetten; dan was ik er het snelst vanaf mee klaar. Dat bleek uiteindelijk een goede keus. 

I decided to cast on for both parts at the same time, to be done with it quicker. In the end it proved to be a very good choice.

De mouwen. Dat viel nog niet mee! Er stonden best veel steken op de naald en voor je heen en weer bent... Maar het is wel vrolijk, al die frisse kleurtjes.

The sleeves. That was hard work! A lot of stitches on the needle and it took a long time to knit a row. It is very pretty in these bright colours.

Toch maar even geïnformeerd hoe lang de mouwen moesten worden. Ik kon een patroon inkorten en dan hup aan het werk voor het voor en achterpand. Dat was interessant; nu moest ik de delen splitsen. Op sommige stukken betekende dat, dat er 8 bollen wol aan hingen te bungelen om in patroon te kunnen blijven werken. Dat ben ik niet gewend!

First I had to inquire for the sleeve length, that meant I could omit one pattern and start right away with the front and back. Then it became more interesting as I had to separate the parts for the neck opening. Working the pattern it meant I had to use 8 balls of yarn; I'm NOT used to that!

Hé het lijkt er al op! Maar het is meer een losse flodder dan een prachtig vestje op een foto... Nu kwam de ellende; het eindeloos wegwerken van losse draadjes. Nu, met mijn shawls zijn dat er hoog uit 3 of 4... Kijk eens naar de kleurwisselingen! Ik zag er als een berg tegen op. Dat vertraagde het wel een beetje...



Yes, it's starting to look like the cardigan from the picture. It's a bit floppy.. Now for the hard part; weaving in all ends. Believe me, there were a lot! I'm not used to that either; knitting my shawls leaves me usually with 3 or 4 strands. It seriously slowed me down.

En uiteindelijk kwam het toch weer goed... Na een aangebreide boord aan de onderkant, gehaakte randen om de sluiting en de nek en een zacht zeepbadje mocht het vestje uitrusten op bed. Na dat het droog was, gewacht tot de zon scheen en gauw naar buiten en foto's maken!

In the end it turned out just right... After I've knitted an edging and crochet-ed the front and neckline, a soft soapy bath the cropped cardigan could take a little nap on the bed.
When it was dry and the sun came out, it was time for some pictures!

De nieuwe eigenaar is er reuze blij mee! Kijk maar...
The new owner is very happy with the result; look!
