 All lace, every row. Like it should be...

 Helemaal in kantpatroon. Elke rij. Zoals het hoort....

The passion for lace.

Er zijn vele shawls in diverse musea op Shetland. Ik heb er al eens over geschreven en het spijt me, maar er komt nog meer....
Nu is er in de groep van Heirloom Knitting op Ravelry begonnen met het ontrafelen van de Williamson Stole. De shawl hangt in het museum in Unst en is door haar uitgebreid gefotografeerd.

There are many shawls in several museums on Shetland. I've been writing about them many times, and I'm sorry to say; more will follow...
Now, in the Heirloom Knitting group on Ravelry we got started with decoding the Williamson Stole. It is on display in the Heritage museum in Unst. The shawl has been extendedly photographed by her.

 Dit is een collage die ik heb gemaakt naar aanleiding van de proeflapjes die al gemaakt zijn naar aanleiding van ons onderzoek. Maar het valt nog niet mee. Met alle informatie die we hebben komen we al aardig dichtbij...

With this collage you can see how close we are already. It's been built with the swatches that are made by us, using the charts we developed.

 In deze foto zie je ongeveer hoe ik te werk ga bij het ontleden van een shawl van foto. Ik maak grote afdrukken en ga los met een stift en rekenmachine. Tellen, tellen en tellen. Vergelijken, proefbreien, aanpassen en nog meer breien. Gelukkig hoef ik het deze keer niet alleen te doen.

In this picture you get an idea how I get to work on a project from a picture. I make big prints and go wild with pencil and calculator. Counting, counting and counting. Comparing, swatching, adapting and more swatching. Luckily I don't have to work on it alone.

 Nu de shawl vorm krijgt is het natuurlijk wel erg belangrijk om een mooi garen uit te kiezen en een leuke kleur... Ik wilde héél graag met een (voor mij) nieuw garen breien en kwam uit bij Habu. In Nederland is er wel een dealer (ik ben tenslotte verslaafd) maar die had mijn kleur niet. Dan maar rechtstreeks uit Amerika bestellen; diep groen. Binnen een week had ik het binnen en ben dus maar meteen begonnen...

Now the shawl is becoming more and more real it became very important to go search for a perfect yarn and a nice colour.... I really wanted to use a new yarn (to me) and ended up with Habu. There is a dealer in Holland (I ám addicted after all) but they didn't carry my colour. So, ordered it directly from the USA and it came in within the week! So why wait??

Ik heb meteen maar 21 punten van de rand gebreid. Eigenlijk niet zo slim, want de rand moet eigenlijk als laatst. Maar best mooi!

I started right away with 21 points for the edging. Not that clever, as the edging should be knitted last. But it turned out very pretty!

Love on the Edge

Een mooi tijdje terug kreeg ik een opdracht om een zéér open shawl te maken. De opdracht geefster had al op mijn blog gekeken en diverse dingen gezien die ze wel mooi vond. Of die gecombineerd konden worden.. 

A while ago I got the assignment to make a véry open shawl. The lady had looked at my blog and had found several patterns to her liking. If it was possible to combine them all. 

Ze wilde er zéker hartjes in. En in het midden een soort 'gaas' patroon. De rand moest niet te groot en vrij rustig maar ook heel open. 

The hearts hád to go in, and the mesh pattern in the center. The eding wasn't to be to big, easy on the eyes yet very open too. 

De shawl is uiteindelijk wel wat groter geworden dan ik in had geschat, een nadeel van het feit dat je een gloednieuw ontwerp maakt. Dat is niet altijd helemaal correct in te schatten. Ik ben zelf erg blij met het resultaat, zoiets had ik nog niet eerder gebreid.

The shawl turned out a bit larger than anticipated. A downside of making a new design. I'm very pleased with how it came out, I hadn't knit something like this before.

De shawl is opgebouwd uit 2 delen: het middendeel met links en rechts hartjes, en de rand die je er omheen breit.

The shawl is built up out of 2 components: the center with on either side a row of hearts, and the edging all around it. 

Wil je hem ook breien?? Heb je ervaring als kantbreister?? Het patroon van het hartje wordt ook in woorden beschreven, maar de rest is allemaal in charts. (NL)

Want to knit one too?? Are you experienced as a lace knitter?? The pattern for the heart is described in words and in chart, the other patterns are charted only. (ENG)

Red Silk

Heb je enig idee hoe moeilijk het is om aan rode zijde te komen? En ook nog in de juiste tint en dikte... Dat viel nog niet mee..

Do you have any idea how hard it can be to get red silk?? And in the right shade and yardage?? That wasn't easy.

Toen de kleur eindelijk gekozen was, werd het BC Garn Jaipur Silk Fino. Maar het was in het echt veel donkerder dan op de foto van de site. Ik heb het rechtstreeks uit Denemarken laten komen; in NL was het niet meer te krijgen (voor zover ik kon vinden...)

When the colour was finally decided on, it was BC Garn Jaipur Silk Fino. I had it shipped   directly from Danmark, as it wasn't available in Holland anymore.

Het was makkelijker om het patroon uit te zoeken, dat had ze gauw besloten. Ze had de Kiss op mijn blog gezien en het ontwerp voor Bart & Francis. Of dat gecombineerd kon worden.. 

It was easier to find a pattern. She had seen Kiss on my blog and a design I've made for Bart & Francis. If it was possible to attach the two into one... 

Dus netjes het patroon Kiss gekocht, en Bart & Francis gemaild. Het patroon voor de rand is nog niet beschikbaar op de site van B & F maar kan wel gekocht worden als pakket op beurzen. 

So I purchased the pattern Kiss, and mailed to Bart and Francis. The pattern for the edging isn't available on their site yet, but I believe it's available as a kit on Fairs.

I cannot seem to get this right...

Ik brei erg graag kant aan 2 kanten. Vanaf het eerste moment dat ik de Myrtle Leaf zag in Victorian Lace today, móest ik hem breien. 

Dat mocht ook, en ik heb hem gebreid met Malabrigo voor Wolhemel, jaren geleden. Daarna nog vaak terug gekomen en gebreid. 
Soms zorgt dat voor problemen, omdat het voor mij een bekend patroon is, en ik niet meer zo hoef na te denken wat ik eigenlijk doe. 

Daarom bied ik mijn excuses aan voor iedereen die Truely Something wilde breien en mijn patroon kocht. Er klopte geen bal van. Dat was niet fijn, het is niet een makkelijk patroon, maar mijn geklooi met de chart maakte het niet makkelijker.

TOEVOEGING: ik heb al veel patronen aangepakt en mocht je deze hebben liggen; stuur me een berichtje en ik stuur je 4.0 toe met de correcte charts en beschrijvingen.

I've updated a lot of my designs; please ask for 4.0 in English with the correct charts. 

 I really love to knit lace on both sides. From the very moment I set eyes on the Myrtle Leaf pattern in Victorian Lace Today I had to knit it.

I was about to, because my friend from Wolhemel (not open anymore) asked me to knit it in Malabrigo yarn. Since then it was a main theme in my knitting. So much so, that I don't see the trouble other people have with it.

And that's why I want to apologize to everyone who wanted to knit Truely Something and bought my pattern. It sucked. Major. That was not a good thing, as it still isn't an easy pattern to knit. My messing up the chart didn't make it easier...

 De eerste 'fout'  die ik niet had uitgeleged is de volgende. In rij 12 zie je een / (brei 2 samen naar rechts) staan.
Dat geldt niet voor de eerste herhaling, dan is het een rechte steek. Maar voor alle herhalingen in de rij daarná geldt wel de / . Anders schuif je de steken op en kun je nooit de blaadjes sluiten.

 The first 'mistake' is that I forgot to mention that the first / in row 12 is indeed a single knit stitch. In the repeats that come in the same row it will be a / . Otherwise the stitches move up and you never get to close the leaves.

 In rij 5 brei je de laatste steken gewoon door, keer je je werk en in rij 6  begin je met de minderingen NA de eerste oranje steekmarkeerder in de foto (van links gezien).

 In row 5 you knit till the end of the row and turn your work. In row 6 you start knitting the decreases after the first orange stitchmarker you see (in the picture from the left).

 Ik raad wel aan om een proeflapje te maken, mocht je nog niet eerder averecht steken naar rechts of naar links te hebben gebreid.

 I recommend to make a swatch when you haven't knit purled stitches together to the left or right.

Oh ja; NOG een fout. De grijze rijen zijn de voorkant van je werk en de witte de achterkant.

Oh, another mistake was found: the grey rows are knit and the white rows are purled...

Flashbacks

Ja. Net als op de tv.
Je bent leuk ergens mee bezig en in een flits zit je ... in het ziekenhuis. Terug naar vorig jaar. Hoe kan dát nou. Alles komt weer boven. De ene keer zit je in de wachtruimte.
De andere keer op de afdeling.
Of in de taxi.

Yes. Like on television. 
You're just busy doing nice things and in a flash your .. in the hospital. Back to last year. 
How did thát happen? Everything is coming back to mind. The one time you're in a waiting room, the other on the ward. Or in the taxi. 

En net als je van de schrik bent bekomen, ga je er natuurlijk over nadenken.
Wat dom.
 Alles is toch goed. Ja. Dat wel.
 Maar hebben we het over het algemeen wel goed aangepakt?? Ja.
We zijn niet van het kastje naar de muur gestuurd. Nee.
Het gaat goed met Chris. Ja.
Waarom denk ik er dan alweer nog steeds aan.
Moeilijk hoor.

Just when you're back in reality, you start thinking about it.
Stupid.
Everythings fine, isn't it? Yes.
We handled things pretty good, didn't we? Yes.
We weren't send from this to that getting nowhere? No.
Chris is doing well. Yes. 
Why am I still thinking about it again.
Pretty difficult. 


Ik heb het er al met diverse mensen over gehad. Technisch zijn we er met z'n allen best goed vanaf gekomen. Het had anders af kunnen lopen. Maar de schaduw blijft zéker nog jaren hangen. We hebben geen idee hoe lang het goed blijft gaan, of hij geen terugval krijgt. Hoe het effect heeft op zijn leven en op dat van z'n broertje en zusje.
Het dagelijkse ritme keert weer terug, dat is fijn. Maar dat duurt meestel (nu) zo'n 3 maanden. Dan is het weer tijd voor een MRI of Echo en is het weer net zo spannend als in het begin.

I've been talking to several people about this. Technically we've been very lucky in how it turned out. It could have been very different. The shadow is hanging over us for the years to come. No clue how he will be in a few months, years or that he will relaps. 
No clue how it will effect his little brother and sister. 
The daily routine has returned, and that's nice. But that will only last (at the moment) for about 3 months. Then it time for another MRI or Echo and it's just as difficult as in the beginning. 

Ik doe natuurlijk wel mijn best om hem niet te behandelen als een klein kind, of alsof hij van glas is en nix mag overkomen. Maar dat neemt mijn ongerustheid niet weg.
Zo kan ik wel zeggen dat groente en fruit eten gezond is, maar ja...
Ondertussen is hij dolgelukkig met zijn brommer en het mooie weer en grijpt hij IEDERE kans aan om een stukje te rijden. Da's mooi, met die lach op zijn gezicht.

In the meantime I really try my best not to treat him as a baby or as if he's made of glass. But it doesn't take my worries away.
I can say that fruit and veggies are healthy...
He's very happy with his scooter/moped ánd the very nice wheather. He's taking EVERY opportunity to pick up his helmet and go for a ride.
That's lovely... to see him smile. 

Pivot

 Zo nu en dan kan ervaring in de weg zitten. Je denkt; oh dat moet zo.. en vervolgens klopt het niet. Dan pas je het aan en dan lukt het helemaal niet meer...
Wat klopt er niet?? Hoe kán dat nou..
En dan haal je het uit, volgt de regels (valt niet mee...) en ja, dan komt het toch uit.
Even wennen, maar ja.

Now and then experience can get in the way. You think: oh, it has to be done like this, and subsequently it goes wrong. You adapt it and it still isn't right.. What?? Am I doing something wrong?? You read it again, stick to the rules (because you have to..) and hé, it works after all.
It takes a bit to get used to. 

 Het garen was lekker om mee te breien; Manos Del Uruguay Lace in bruin. Het patroon vroeg om 3,75 mm naalden en die had ik ook nog liggen. Het waren erg korte bamboenaaldjes, die schoten dus regelmatig onder mijn arm vandaan.
Ik brei, als het ook maar éven kan, altijd op rechte naalden. Ik heb dus meteen maar HIER een paar extra naalden besteld die wél lang genoeg waren.

 The yarn was perfect to knit with, Manos del Uruguay Lace in brown. The pattern asked for US 5 size needles. I had those, but in bamboo and very short. The slipped away from under my arm frequently.
When ever possible I always knit on straight needles, so I ordered some more lengthy needles in this size HERE.

 Toen was de rand aan de beurt. Ik zette op, en begon. Het lukte niet! Hè, niet weer...
Nog een paar keer (7x) proberen, maar nee. Toch maar gemaild met de ontwerpster en na mijn uitleg bleek er een klein foutje in te zitten. Geen probleem, aangepast en toen was het zó maar klaar.

 Then the edging needed to be done. I casted on, and started knitting. Hé, it doesn't go right. What?? Again?? Tried some more (7 times) and eventually mailed the designer with my findings. It happened to be a small glitch and after it was worked out the edging was done pretty quick.

Jinni from the block...

 Laatst was ik bij de friese Stitch'n'Bitch avond in Leeuwarden en zij vroeg of ik nog tijd had om een voorbeeld voor de shop te breien. Het liefst zo gauw mogelijk, dan kon hij ook nog mee naar de Brei en Haakdag in Nieuwegein.

Eerst dacht ik nee, dat lukt niet. Maar ik werd verleid door het garen, de kleur maar vooral door de vorm van het patroon. Zoiets had ik nog niet gebreid!

The other day as was at the frisian Stitch'n'Bitch evening in Leeuwarden en she asked me if I could knit her an example for her shop. Preferably as soon as possible so she could take it with her to the Knit and Hook day in Nieuwegein.

At first I thought I couldn't. But I was seduced by the colour, the yarn but mainly the shape of the shawl... I hadn't knit this shape before! 

 Na een paar rijen groeide het stekenaantal al vrij sterk. En ondanks dat het patroon maar 7  herhalingen heeft, zat ik aan het einde al met ruim 370 stk op de naald. Maar omdat het toch kantgewicht is, pastte het makkelijk. Het duurde wel steeds langer voor ik het rijtje uit had gebreid.

 After only a few rows, the stitchcount goes up pretty quick. And eventhough the pattern is repeated 7 times, the stitchcount near the end was over 370 per row. It fits on my lace needles perfectly as it is laceweight yarn. But it took increasing amounts of time to knit a single row.

 Het leuke van dit model is dat het midden een prachtig patroontje heeft. De 'vleugels' hebben een heel andere structuur en een duidelijke richting wat het midden weer benadrukt. En je kunt hem over je schouders dragen zodat je het midden goed ziet.
Of.. zoals ik ze zelf zou dragen (bovenste foto) : lekker om je nek met het garen heerlijk tegen je huid.

The wonderfull thing with this shape is that the center really stands out. The 'wings' are having a totally different structure and direction. They do make the center stand out perfectly.
You can wear it around the shoulders, with full view of that section, but I like to wear it the other way around (like the top picture). Close to the skin...

 LET OP! Wanneer je deze shawl gaat blocken, let op de punten. Ik heb eerst punten getrokken met de block kit draden en daar overheen nieuwe punten opgespannen. Anders krimpt het patroon ineen.
En let op de vorm van de shawl. In het patroon staat een duidelijk voorbeeld hoe dat er uit komt te zien. Block eerst het midden en dan de punten hoog neerleggen en bijspannen.

ATTENTION! When you are about to block this shawl, take notice of the points. At first I pinned out the points with blocking wires, and then I pulled out the points of the shawl over that. Otherwise the pattern doesn't come out to it's full potential.
And please take notice of the shape. In the pattern there's a clear example of it. First pin out the centerpattern, then the long tips on each side higher and fix. Then work out the sides .
