Werkboeken .......... Work logs

Vanmorgen zat ik op Facebook en daar was iemand die een opmerking plaatste. Stop een briefje in de tas waar je breiwerk in zit, dan kun je later de informatie terug vinden die je misschien nodig hebt..

Daar zijn héle mooie oplossingen voor.. Kijk maar:

 This morning I was on Facebook and someone mentioned a good idea. Put a piece of paper with notes about your knitting in the bag it is stored in. So you can rely on that information later on.

In my opinion there are great solutions for these type of things... Let's see:

2010

2008-2010

 Ik koop meestal niets in de Museum shop, omdat ik weet dat het ergens blijft liggen of het is gewoon te duur. Tot ik dit schrift kreeg van mijn moeder. Ze wíst dat ik dit heel graag wilde hebben maar niet voor mezelf zou kopen. Ik had het kleine schriftje (blauw) gekocht. Een prachtig moment om je aantekeningen voor je breiwerk te maken.

2011

 Usually I don't buy anything at a Museum shop, mostly because it will get lost or because it's too expensive. Until I got the notebook with the Chinese Warriors on it, from my mom. She knew I really liked it but wouldn't buy it for myself. I did purchase the little blue Warrior booklet.

2011

 In feite doe ik het zelfde wat ik op Ravelry ook doe: welk garen, wat voor naald, hoeveel garen, wanneer ik ben begonnen. En sinds 2012-13 doe ik er ook een draadje bij van het garen. Dat maakt het wat realistischer. Ik ben eerlijk, ik schrijf er ook in of het fout ging, of ik uitgehaald heb, een nieuwe opdracht heb gekregen of wanneer ik (weer) in een zwart gat ben gevallen omdat er projecten af zijn (en vaak opgestuurd naar een blije ontvanger) waar ik toch erg moeilijk afscheid van kan nemen.

In fact, I note things down exactly like I would on Ravelry: which yarn, size needles, how much and when I've started. And since 2012-13 I also add a bit of actual yarn. To make it more tangible. I am honest.
I do write what I did wrong, what I've frogged, if I started a new design or commission or if I fell down the black hole (again) after finishing a project, (probably send to a happy reciever) of which it was very hard to let go.

2012

 
Aan sommige boekjes zit natuurlijk een speciaal verhaal. Het boekje hier boven is gelaserprint. De (grotere)  gaatjes in de shawl (foto) zitten OOK in het papier. Dit kocht ik in de Museum Winkel van Shetland Museum & Archives. De shawl ben ik zelf aan het breien en de mevrouw op de foto lijkt wel op mijn oma toen ze jong was... (er in ligt een boekenlegger van een stukje tweed wat over is. Jamieson's of Shetland)

2013

With some notebooks, something special is going on. The one with the lady and the knitted shawl; every (large) hole in the Lace shawl is actually laserprinted in the paper! And, the lady in the picture looks a bit like my grandmother when she was young. I bought it in the Shetland Museum and Archives shop in 2012 (WoolWeek) In it, you'll notice a small ribbon of tweed. (Jamieson's of Shetland).  

2014

Nu ben ik alweer een tijdje niet meer naar een museum geweest (In Dokkum hadden niet dit soort schriftjes). Maar de lokale "Van der Velde" heeft... Peter Pauper Boekjes. Van dezelfde uitgever met iedere keer een heel leuke print én een elastiekje om de boel bij elkaar te houden.  

I haven't been to a Museum for a while (In Dokkum, they didn't have these) but the local bookshop has Peter Pauper Press booklets. Every now and then, they have several with a nice print and an elastic band to keep it all in. 

Je kunt ook je eigen boekjes maken! Gewoon ruitjes papier of samen met lijntjes papier en een stukje stof of (nep) leer er om heen en klaar! 

You could make your own booklet! Just use math paper (squares) or college paper (lines) and add some fabric or (p-)leather. 

Swatchen

Breien is zo´n leuke bezigheid dat ik in het begin niet kon wachten om te beginnen.
Helaas leidde dat nog wel eens tot onafgemaakte projecten. Het garen was niet mooi genoeg, te dun, te weinig of het patroon leende zich tóch niet om nog 300x te herhalen..

Knitting is so much fun, that in the early days I couldn't wait to get started.
Unfortunately that resulted in unfinished projects. The yarn wasn't up for the job, or was not sufficient, too thin or the pattern didn't appeal enough for more than 300 repeats...

En dit is een verhaal apart.. Ik wil soms zó graag een patroontje gebruiken. Ik schrijf het op terwijl ik het brei, maar na een tijdje merk ik dat dit ondoenlijk is voor sommige breisters.
In dit lapje wisselen het breien in de voorkant en achterkant van het werk zich af. Voorkant in recht, achterkant in averecht, maar daardoor bijna onmogelijk om te charten. Opnieuw in ander garen is dan niet altijd een oplossing.. Hoe mooi ook..

This one has a story of its own. There are some pattern screaming to be worked. I write while knitting it, and then discover that it's so difficult that it will be undoable for some knitters. In this swatch, front and back patterns are worked, in stockinette. But that means some repeats are so irregular that charting is near to impossible. Trying it in a different yarn doesn't help. Eventhough it looks só pretty..

Andere keren staan patronen braaf in een hoekje van een boekje te wachten. Je bent er al 100x aan voorbij gebladerd en dan plotseling voel je dat het tóch moet proberen..

Other times the patterns are quietly waiting in a corner of a book. You've browsed passed it a 100 times and then suddenly you háve to try it. (Crown, Heirloom Knitting).

En dan zijn er nog héle speciale swatchen...
Wanneer ik me niet zo denderend voel, dan ga ik naar de site van de Shetland Museum and Archives en dan zoek ik een leuk plaatje uit en ga helemaal los. Ik pluis het helemaal uit, zoek een leuk draadje (tegenwoordig steeds vaker zijde) en brei het. Dan kan ik metéén checken of het klopt en rijen corrigeren..

And then there are the very special swatches.
When I'm feeling down, I go the the website of the Shetland Museum and Archives, pick out a nice photo and let myself go. I work out the pattern, writing it down, search for a nice yarn (often silk) and knit it. That way I can check if I got it right and correct rows if necessary.

Daarna ben ik weer helemaal happy! Ik zou zeggen: swatchen is zo slecht nog niet...

That makes me véry happy! It's my way of telling you that swatching can be a good thing.

Day 3

Maandag. Het gaat beginnen. Maar eerst telefoon uit NL. Mijn ouders bellen om me te feliciteren met mijn verjaardag. Even later belt Manlief ook! De dag kan beginnen..

Monday. It's time. But first a phonecall from The Netherlands. My parents are calling to congratulate me on my birthday. Hubbie is calling also, but a bit later. Let's start the day.

 We gaan eerst een stuk wandelen. De vorige dag waren we daar verkeerd gereden en zagen dat we daar wel een heel mooi uitzicht hadden. Eenmaal om de bocht van de baai bleek een begraafplaats te zijn. Met hele oude en hele nieuwe graven. Eigenlijk was het mooiste dat bijna 'iedereen' uitzicht had op de baai.

First we took a walk. The previous day we had taken a wrong turn and saw it would be nice to be there a bit longer. Walking about a bit and turning the corner there was a cemetary. Old and new graves. The nice thing was that almost 'everybody' had a view of the bay (or "Sound" in Shetland).

Zie je dat kleine zwarte vlekje in het water?? Een zeehond! Er waren een paar aan het zwemmen in de buurt.

Tijd voor wat lekkers. In het museum werden we gewezen naar een tafeltje bij het raam. Voor Amy hadden zelfs glutenvrije lekkernijen en ik nam een superscone! Met jam. In élke tafel was een paneeltje met een gebreid, geweven of gevilt item.

Time for some snacks. At the museum we were pointed to a table at the window. Amy was very happy to know they had an excellent choice of glutenfree products. I took a superscone! With strawberryjam. In évery table there was a little item knit, woven or felted.

's Middags was het eindelijk zo ver: De workshop van Kate Davies. Ik moest nog behoorlijk opletten; engels horen en NL schrijven. Enorm veel geleerd over ontwerpprocessen, vormgeven en het onvermijdelijke. Lévende modellen gebruiken. Ik wil zelf nog steeds niet op de foto, dus ik moet op zoek naar een ademend model.

The afternoon was reserved for the workshop by Kate Davies. I had to pay a lot of attention: listening in english and making notes in Dutch. Learned a lót about design processes, designing items and the inevitable. Using live models. I still don't want to be in the picture, so it might be time to search for some breathing models.

Op de voorgrond van deze foto zie je de Sixareen Kep. Een prachtig doordacht ontwerp van Kate, in de nieuwste garens van Jamieson & Smith: Heritage Yarns (6 kleuren). Ik heb alle kleuren gekocht en geloof me: het is heerlijk zacht. De Kep past me maar net, dus ik zal een maatje groter moeten breien (naaldmaat omhoog).

Kate had bedacht dat iemand van de workshop wel kon fungeren als model en dat de 'rest' mocht stylen en fotograferen. Bovendien mochten we discussieren over de naam en besluiten wat het uiteindelijk zou worden. Hier hadden ze nix aan mij; de taal was toch een probleem. Kate was erg aardig; ze heeft onze namen toegevoegd aan het patroon.

The inspiration...

In the foreground of the picture of Kate Davies you see the Sixareen Kep. A wonderful design with a well thought through design. She told us all about it, so later we were allowed to come up with a name for the design. Kate used the latest yarns of Jamieson & Smith: Heritage Yarns, 6 colours. I've bought them all and believe me: they're very soft. My big head didn't quite fit in the hat, so I will have to increase the needlesize when I knit it. Kate decided that we could also participate in the photographing and styling of the design.

Kate was very kind to add all our names to the pattern as coworkers. Thank you!

Later op de avond zijn we nog in Scalloway geweest; Amy wilde erg graag even kijken bij een groep vrouwen die bezig waren met erg mooie materialen. Er stond in het kleine studio-tje een paar prachtige weefgetouwen. Ik heb er geen verstand van, dus ik kan je er niet veel over vertellen. Maar gezellig was het wel!

Later in the evening we went to Scalloway; Amy wanted to look at a group of women working with amazing materials. In the small studio were a pair of looms, and Amy was very happy seeing them. I don't spin or weave, so you cannot get any useful information from me about that. It was a pleasant evening.
